INTRODUCTION

Community health bag is the carrier containing the tools , equipments and materials needed
during the nurse’s visit to home for performing nursing interventions which include various
diagnostic tests, demonstration of care and patient care activities. Community health bag
made up of leather, canvas, or light metals .The material should be dark in colour washable
and durable .It should be stable and should not be collapsed when placed over a surface.

DEFINITION

 The bag technique is a tool by which the nurse, during her visit will enable her to
perform a nursing procedure with ease and deftness, to save time and effort with the
end view of rendering effective nursing care to clients.
 The public health bag is an essential and indispensable equipment of a public health
nurse which she/he has to carry along during her home visits. It contains
basic medication and articles which are necessary for giving care.

PURPOSE:

 To carry equipment and material needed for home, school or industrial visit.
 To carry equipment and materials that are needed to make tests and to demonstrate
care such as dressing ,eye irrigation, injections, urine testing etc.
 To perform nursing procedures and blood and urine investigations during visit.

PRINCIPLES OF BAG TECHNIQUE

 The nurse should use economical method of using supplies and equipments in bag
appropriately.
 Clean and dry the bag and articles before replacing it to the bag.
 Clean and sterilize contaminated articles before returning to bag.
 Keep sterile equipments in sterile compartment of the bag(top compartment).
 Use the equipments and materials available in the home while carrying out the
nursing procedures in home.
 Teach the family members regarding nursing care be performed in home.
 Follow the standing orders appropriately ,while providing care at home.
 Follow aseptic technique through out the procedure.
 Provide privacy and comfort when carrying out any procedure.
 Maintain IPR (Inter –personnel Relationship) to the family.

BP apparatus should be carried separately and are never placed in the bag.

Points to consider :

 The bag should contain all the necessary articles, supplies and equipment that will
be used to answer the emergency needs.
 The bag and its contents should be cleaned very often,the supplies replaced and
ready for use anytime.
 The bag and its contents should be well protected from contact with any article in
the patient ‘s home.
 Consider the bag and its contents clean And sterile,while articles that belong to the
patients as dirty and contaminated.
 The arrangement of the contents of the bag should be the one most convenient to
the user,to facilitate efficiency and avoid confusion.
 Don’t keep any personal things inside the bag such as books and snacks.
 Protect the bag while using in the house from handling by children, from dust.

CONCLUSION

equipment in the community health bag for performing various nursing interventions at
home .
