Wonders of the World

1) The seven wonders of the ancient world is a group of truly expressive structures built between
about 2600 and 200 BC. Can you match the names of these seven wonders with their
descriptions?

A group of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafra,

and Menkaura, outside modern Cairo, is
often called the first wonder of the worl.
The largest Pyramid had an original
estimated height of 482 ft (now
approximately 450 ft). Estimated date of
completion is 2680 B.C. Of all the Ancient
Wonders, the pyramids alone survive.

Often listed as the second wonder, these

Built during the 5th century B.C., this colossal
figure in gold and ivory was reputedly 40 ft
high. All trace of it is lost, destroyed in a massive
fire, except for reproductions on coins.
gardens were built around 600 B.C. Very
little is known about this wonder,
including when or how it was destroyed.
A beautiful structure, began about 350 B.C.,
has columns 60 ft high. It was destroyed by
invading Goths in A.D. 262.

This famous monument was erected by Queen
Artemisia in memory of her husband, King
Mausolus of Caria in Asia Minor, who died in
353 B.C. This shrine is the source of the modern
word “mausoleum”.
This bronze statue of Helios (Apollo), about
105 ft high, was completed in 280 B.C. It
was destroyed during an earthquake in 224
B.C.

The seventh wonder was the Pharos (lighthouse), built during the 3rd century B.C. on the island of
Pharos off the coast of Egypt. It was more than 400 ft tall, making it the tallest structure in the
ancient world.
