BID’AH

DURING THE
MONTH OF
LECTURE BY ABLAH SAFIYAH

LECTURE BY USTADZAH SAFIYAH

AL MADINAH AL MUNAWARRAH KSA
▪“… And whatever the
Messenger has given
you – take; and what
he has forbidden you –
DALIL
refrain from. And fear
Allah; indeed, Allah is
severe in penalty.”
[Quran: 59:7]
ABLAH S
▪ Islam is a UNIVERSAL religion.
✓It teaches what is
right and what is
Our Creator is
most merciful wrong;
✓good and bad;
✓enjoining halal and
forbidding haram.
ABLAH S
▪ALLAH bestows mercy,
favors and grants bounties
upon His slaves, during all
times,
✓to help expiate their sins,
✓elevate their ranks
✓and make up for their
shortcomings.

ABLAH S
▪ . Allah has organized a system
for us to follow in order to gain
His pleasure such as:

✓He legislated for us a month

which we can observe Sawm,
✓another which we can
perform Hajj in
ABLAH S
✓and He also legislated
prayer during the night and
the Witr prayer,
✓the Eid sacrifice,
✓and the ‘Aqiqah (birth
sacrifice) and many other
righteous deeds.

ABLAH S
▪ Moreover, we find that any act of worship
which causes the people to come closer to
Allah Almighty is mentioned in His Book
or in the Sunnah of His Prophet.

▪ The problem is in those people who try to

come close to Allah and gain His reward
by looking outside these two sources, and
thus, divert from the right path.

ABLAH S
▪The Prophet said during
his farewell pilgrimage,
▪ “I have left with you that,
which if you adhere to,
you will never go astray,
the Book of Allah and my
Sunnah”.
ABLAH S
▪ “Verily, the number of months with
Allaah is twelve months (in a year),
so was it ordained by Allaah on the
The month of Rajab Day when He created the heavens
is one of the sacred and the earth;
months of which
Allah says ▪ of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st,
(interpretation of the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months
the meaning): of the Islamic calendar). That is the
right religion, so wrong not
yourselves therein”[al-Tawbah 9:36]

ABLAH S
MUHARRAM RAJAB
THA SACRED
MONTHS ARE

DHUL DHUL HAJJ

QAIDAH

ABLAH S
▪ Al-Bukhaari (4662) and Muslim
(1679) narrated from Abu Bakrah
(may Allaah be pleased with him)
that the Prophet said: “The year is
twelve months, of which four are
sacred: three consecutive months,
Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and
Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which
comes between Jumaada and
Sha’baan.

ABLAH S
▪ These months are called
sacred for two reasons:

▪ 1- Because fighting therein

is forbidden unless initiated
by the enemy
▪ 2- Because transgression of
the sacred limits therein is
worse than at other times.
ABLAH S
▪Hence Allaah has
forbidden us to commit
sins during these
months, as He says
(interpretation of the
meaning):“… wrong not
yourselves therein”
▪ [al-Tawbah 9:36]

ABLAH S
▪ There are many rulings related to the
month of Rajab. Some of them existed
in the pre-Islamic era and scholars
differed regarding their continuation
after Islam such as the prohibition of
killing and slaughtering certain
sacrifices.
▪ Some others first appeared along with
the advent of Islam such as
performing certain prayer, fasting,
‘Umrah and the like.We will touch
upon this topic in detail and the
innovations practised in this month.
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 1.

Celebrating the first night of Rajab called

Ragha’ib (Night of great bestowals or
wishes):

Salaat al-raghaa’ib is one of the

innovations (bid’ahs) that have been
introduced in the month of Rajab. It is done
on the night of the first Friday in Rajab,
between Maghrib and ‘Isha’, and is
preceded by fasting on the first Thursday
of Rajab.
ABLAH S
▪ Salaat al-raghaa’ib was first
introduced in Bayt al-Maqdis
(Jerusalem) in 480 AH i.e., this prayer
was innovated after the fourth century.

▪ There is no report that the Prophet did

it, or any of his companions, or any of
the best generations or imams. This
alone is sufficient to prove that it is a
reprehensible innovation, and it is not
a praiseworthy Sunnah.
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 2.
Sacrifices done during this sacred
month, calling it ‘Far’a and ‘Atirah:

The Muslims scholars said Islam voided

this practice. Abu Hurayrahnarrated that
the Prophetsaid: “There is No Fara’. No
‘Ateerah.”

{Al-Bukhari 5473 and 5474 and Muslim}

ABLAH S
▪Innovation 3.
▪ There is no authentic Hadeeth in
this regard and so this practice
should be abandoned.
▪ On the other hand, those who are in
the habit of fasting regularly, even
in during other months, may fast.
Moreover, the Prophet never fasted
any month in full other than
Ramadan,
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 3….CONT
▪ As narrated by ‘Aa’ishah‘The
Prophet used to fast so much until
we would think that he always fasts,
and would stop fasting until we
would think that he never fasts. I
never saw the Prophet fast a full
month except during Ramadan, and
he never fasted more than fasting
during the month of Sha’baan.’
▪ {Al-Bukhari: Volume 3, Book 31, Number 192 and Muslim}
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 3. …CONT
▪ It was narrated that ‘Umarused to hit
men’s hands until they would start using
them to eat during the month of Rajab,
and he would say, ‘What is the virtue of
Rajab? It is a month which the people
during the pre-Islamic period used to
honor, but when Islam came, people
gave this up.’

▪ Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with

him) saw his household preparing
during the month of Rajab, and said to
them, ‘Did you make Rajab like
Ramadan?’. Then he threw the baskets
ABLAH S and broke the cups.
▪Innovation 4.
▪ Special Dua being recited for this Sacred
month:
▪ It was narrated by ‘Abdullah, the son of
Imam Ahmad, in Zawaa’id al-Musnad
(2346), at-Tabaraani in al-Awsat (3939), al-
Bayhaqi in ash-Shu‘ab (3534) and Abu
Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (6/269) via Zaa’idah
ibn Abi ar-Ruqaad who said: Ziyaad al-
Numayri told us, from Anas ibn Maalik who
said:
▪ When Rajab began, the Messenger of Allah
(blessing and peace of Allah be upon him)
said: “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and
Sha‘baan, and let us reach Ramadan.”
ABLAH S

Sha‘baan, and let us reach Ramadan.”
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 5
▪ Umrah during Rajab called
Rajabbiyyah:
▪ Umrah during Rajab which has no
evidence proving it. As a matter of
fact, the only month during which
‘Umrah would have a certain
prescribed reward is the month of
Ramadhan.
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 5
▪ Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with
them) reported:
The Prophet said, “(The performance of)
‘Umrah during Ramadan is equal to Hajj
(pilgrimage).” Or said, “Equal to the
performance of Hajj with me.”{Al-Bukhari: Book
11, Hadith 1278 and Muslim}.

▪ Therefore, anyone who performs

‘Umrah during Rajab for the sake of
Rajab has committed a mistake.
Moreover, the Prophetnever performed
‘Umrah during Rajab .
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 6
▪ Major event happened in Rajab:
❑It is said to have been reported that
major events happened in the
month of Rajab, but none of these
reports are true.
❑It was reported that the Prophet
was born on the first night of Rajab,
❑and that he received his Mission on
the twenty-seventh, or twenty-fifth of
ABLAH S
this month. None of this is correct.
▪Innovation 6
▪ Major event happened in Rajab:

▪ It was narrated that Qays ibn

‘Abbaad said regarding the tenth
day of Rajab that Allaah
eliminates what He wills or
confirms, and with Him is the
Mother of the Book.
ABLAH S
▪Innovation 6
▪ Major event happened in Rajab:
▪ And it was reported that people
during the Pre-Islamic era used to
supplicate Allaah The Almighty
against the oppressor and they
used to be answered and there
are many well known reports
regarding this stated by Ibn Abi
Ad-Dunya in Mujaab Ad-Da‘wah
ABLAH S and the like.
▪Innovation 7
Permissibility to visit graves is based
on the Hadith in which the Prophet
says:

▪ “Visit the graves for they remind

you of the Hereafter”.

ABLAH S
▪Innovation 8
▪ Celebrating the 27th of Rajab:
▪ Celebrating the night of the twenty-seventh of Rajab
and the night of the middle of Sha‘ban are two
Bid‘ahs based on no evidence. It is not proven that
the Prophet stated that the night of the twenty-
seventh of Rajab is the Night of Isra’ (Night Journey)
and Mi‘raj (Ascension to Heaven). The Hadiths
related in this regard are not Sahih (authentic)
according to scholars. Even if it is proven that this
night is the Night of Mi‘raj, it is not permissible to
celebrate it because neither the Messenger nor his
Sahabah (May Allah be pleased with them)- who are
our example to pattern after – celebrated it.It was
introduced in the fourth generation.

▪ Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah
have mercy on him) was asked about
fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab
and spending that night in prayer.
▪ He replied:Fasting on the twenty-
seventh of Rajab and spending that
night in prayer is a bid’ah
(innovation), and every bid’ah is a
going astray. .

▪ ‘Aa’ishah narrated that the
Prophetsaid: “He who performs any
deed which is not according to what
we are upon (i.e., the Prophet and
his Companions) then it is
rejected.” [Muslim]
▪ Therefore, any deed which is not in
accordance with what Islam has
come with is rejected. ABLAH S
▪May Allah protect us
from all forms of
innovations that lead to
Hell fire- the wretched
and evil abode. Aameen.
