Professor Emeritus James Barnes, Chair of the Division of Theory-Composition at the
University of Kansas, taught orchestration, arranging and composition courses, and
wind band history and repertoire courses. At KU, he served as an Assistant, and later, as
Associate Director of Bands for 27 years.

His numerous publications for concert band and orchestra are extensively performed in
the United States, Europe and the Pacific Basin. His works have been performed at

Tanglewood, Boston Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy
Center in Washington, DC.

Barnes has twice received the coveted American Bandmasters Association Ostwald
Award for outstanding contemporary wind band music. He has been the recipient of
numerous ASCAP Awards for composers of serious music, the Kappa Kappa Psi
Distinguished Service to Music Medal, the Bohumil Makovsky Award for Outstanding
College Band Conductors, along with numerous other honors and grants.

He has recorded three commercial compact discs of his music with the world famous
Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. He has also been commissioned to compose works for all
five of the major military bands in Washington, DC. Mr. Barnes has traveled extensively
as a guest composer, conductor, and lecturer throughout the United States, Europe,
Australia, Japan and Taiwan. He is a member of the American Society of Composers,
Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the American Bandmasters Association and several
other professional organizations and societies. Since 1984, his music has been published
by Southern Music Company of San Antonio, Texas.

FULL ENSEMBLE WORKS
Composed in the summer of 1984, Yorkshire Ballad was premiered at the Kansas
Bandmasters Association Convention by Claude T. Smith and the Kansan Intercollegiate
BARNES, JAMES Band. Since its publication, it has become one of the composer's most popular works, and
has been arranged for a variety of ensembles. The composer writes "I composed this little

The work opens with a dramatic brass fanfare before moving to a spirited allegro. The

slower middle portion is rather "jazzy" in character with a trumpet solo. After several
statements of this lush song, the faster music returns before the opening fanfare reprises,
closing the piece in dramatic fashion. Includes generous cross-cuing to enable
performances with smaller instrumentations.

Prairie Winds Festival is a fast, happy-go-lucky “opener.” It is very carefully scored and
ru
cross-cued, so that almost any size band can perform it. The Piccolo, 2nd Oboe, 2nd
Bassoon, Contra-Alto Clarinet, 3rd Trombone and Double Bass parts are all optional, but if
you have these instruments, it will sound more full.

This dramatic work for young players is intended to portray a noble, mystical pursuit of some
great conquest or accomplishment. Full of driving percussion, resolving tone clusters,
dramatic brass writing and spectacular tutti musical statements, it also features easy
passages for solo oboe, bassoon and piccolo. This piece is a great choice for accomplished
middle school or smaller high school bands. It is generously cross cued to be performed with
limited instrumentation.

S836 Tchaikovsky Suite (Grade 3) HL3778679


This piece is taken from Tchaikovsky's "Album for the Young", op. 39 for solo piano. Every
effort has been made by the arranger to make this setting sound as much as possible like

the orchestra music of Tchaikovsky. Some careful revisions and tastefully stylistic additions
were made in order to make this score more effective for large ensemble as opposed to solo
piano. This setting is carefully cross-cued for younger bands and for bands without full
instrumentation. Movements: 1. Russian Folk Song, 2. Morning Prayer, 3. Mazurka, 4.
Polka, 5. Waltz

A tone poem for wind band that describes the 150th anniversary of one of the most cruel,
unjust and embarrassing official actions in the history of the United States Government.

The year 2002 marked the 200th anniversary of the United States Military Academy at West
Point. This greatest of all military academies has produced many of the finest officers to
ever serve in the United States military. This piece is a musical potrayal of the dogged
determination, the indomitable spirit and the raw courage of the thousands of men and
women who have passed through West Point for these past two hundred years. It was
premiered by the U.S. Military Academy Band at West point in January 2002, with Lt. Col.
David Dietrick conducting.

This work for early intermediate bands is a wonderful selection for contest or a concert
