Exploitation of Indian workers
Police and Immigration New Zealand have
become increasingly aware of an ongoing
problem around the exploitation of Indian
workers in New Zealand, and as a result a
number of businesses and employers have
been convicted for exploiting workers.
Abuse of workers ranges from paying
them less than the average wage, forcing
them to work long hours, refusing to
provide them time off or issue employees
time slips.
Recently a reputable business was found
to be encouraging employees on student
visas to work more than the allowed
20hours per week, yet failed to pay them
for more than the 20 hours.
An investigation in to this business found
that many of the Indian migrant workers
on work visas were only paid 40 hours
despite working between 45 – 60 hours
regularly each week.
On another occasion a worker was forced
to work seven days a week without sick
leave, holiday pay, overtime or a day off
in lieu for public holidays worked. The
employer responsible for this abuse made
his employee who was living with him at
the time, cook and clean for his boss.
Police and immigration New Zealand
recognise that migrants are a vulnerable
sector of the workforce because they
are less likely to know their rights and
entitlements compared to New Zealand
workers.

What we have found is that many
employees are reluctant to come forward,
particularly when there was a possible
breach in their visa conditions.
What we must remember, is that Indian
and migrant workers have the same rights
as all other workers in New Zealand, and
Immigration services treats migrants
fairly when they come forward to report
genuine exploitation.
We encourage anyone being forced to
work for less than the minimum wage, or
work excessive hours, to come forward if
they feel that they are being exploited by
their employers.

Diwali festival celebrated
with pomp and show
Tens of thousands of people turned up
to Diwali Mela organised by Auckland
Council annually comprising of almost
two days of performances and a large
selection of street food. This was the
seventeenth year of the annual festival
which first started in Auckland in
2002 to acknowledge traditional and
contemporary Indian culture in New
Zealand.
The weekend long "festival of lights,"
as it is commonly known, signifies the
triumph of light over darkness and
renewal of life. Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern officially opened the festival on
stage at the Aotea Centre on Saturday
the 20th October.

Chinese and Indian communities the

their luck, after a general election
transformed by Jacinda Ardern taking
over as Labour leader.
But there was little time before reality
hit in the form of the 100-day plan, an
ambitious list of top priorities - a list
embarrassing and humiliating, but Mr
Bridges seem to be in a shrug off mode.
Even in his two minutes address
on the occasion, The Indian High
Commissioner Mr Sanjiv Kohli, did not
seem to be in a mood to show any mercy
either to Simon Bridge by showing him
the mirror in context with both India
and China’s size and might by telling
him that it could possibly a subject of
a life time research for him or his Party

Both Mr Bridges and Mr Ross made race
-based comments that pitted the value

to perform in the Diwali Mela apart from
hundreds of local young and old very
talented people who made this occasion
really enjoyable.

up the expectations of many in the
public sector and social services; there's
currently a great deal of industrial unrest
driven by key quarters of traditional
Labour support, including education,
health and transport unions.
Mr Robertson and colleagues are also
keeping an uneasy eye on international
developments, including trade tensions
between China and the US, events far
away but with the potential to have a
negative impact on New Zealand's open
economy.
The government's two main
vulnerabilities are its economic
management and a breakdown in
coalition, or confidence and supply,
arrangements. The test for Ms Ardern as
prime minister is that she has to be the

For a Government that made a lot of
noise during the last general election
time about creating a more equal
New Zealand; all that they have done
is to spoil the good work that the
previous New Zealand National Party
Government did

outpacing our wage increases.
And yet this Government continues
to pile on more taxes on innocent,
hardworking Kiwis.
Petrol prices are at record levels, yet all
we hear is it is beyond their control to
bring prices to affordable levels.
Drivers are angry every time they
fill up at the pump and it gives them
no comfort from the Government’s
willingness to double-dip on tax if
petrol prices keep rising

And the sad part Mr Speaker is that they
will stubbornly insist more taxes are

3 Paytm employees arrested for
trying to extort Rs 20 crore from owner
The Noida Police on Monday arrested
three Paytm employees for allegedly trying
to blackmail the e-wallet giant's founder
Vijay Shekhar Sharma and extort Rs 20
crore.
According to police, one of the employees
who has been arrested happened to be
Sharma's secretary and is believed to
be the mastermind behind the act. The
accused also threatened Sharma to leak
stolen personal data and confidential
information if the amount was not paid
on time.
"Sharma had lodged a complaint with the
police that three employees, a woman
and two of her aides, had stolen personal
data from the company and blackmailed
to pay Rs. 20 crores for not leaking

Court on Monday said that the

"wholly unacceptable".

vacancies in lower courts and
sought information from high courts and
the state governments.
The top court also noted there is a total
number of 22,036 posts in the subordinate
judiciary and out of these, 5,133 posts were
lying vacant. "22,036 constitute the total
workforce of the District and Subordinate
Judiciary in the country," the bench said.
The bench, while pursuing the information
collected by the Registry of the Supreme
Court, Registries of different High Courts,
said that it indicates that recruitment
process to fill up 4,180 posts is underway,
and the recruitment processes are poised
at different stages in different states.
"The existence of vacancies to the extent
indicated is wholly unacceptable. The
Registry of this Court is, therefore, directed
to register a suo motu writ petition," the
bench said.
The bench directed the high courts and
all the state governments to submit
information of dates on which the
recruitment process for the two posts -
higher judicial service and lower judicial
service - was initiated and when are they
expected to be completed and when will
be the appointments made.
Adding to it, the order of the Apex court
stated, "If the time taken has exceeded the

(Mbps) Ultra-Fast Broadband wholesale
product is likely to become the basic fibre
wholesale service (the ‘anchor service’)
from 2020 under the Telecommunications
(New Regulatory Framework) Amendment
Bill. An anchor service ensures that a
basic broadband service is available
to consumers at a reasonable price, to
provide an ‘anchor’ on the price and
quality of other fibre services.
Under the Amendment Bill, Chorus will
be required to provide retailers with
anchor services, which are the wholesale
inputs to retail UFB services. The anchor
services are the basic broadband and voice
products.
“By constraining the starting price caps
for the UFB services (such as the 100/20
Megabit service) to 2019 levels, we can
ensure New Zealanders have broad price
stability in these services as the transition
to the new regulatory framework occurs,”
Mr Faafoi said.

Alosio Taimo, the Auckland rugby coach
on trial for sexually abusing boys, has been
found guilty of most of the 106 charges laid
against him.
The 55-year-old has been on trial in the
High Court at Auckland for nine weeks.

Commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita
Discourse 1:
The Colophon of the
Bhagavadgita
Brahmavidyayam yogasastre
srikrsnarjunasamvade. These words
occur at the end of each chapter of the
Bhagavad-Gita. Those who do not know
Sanskrit might not have even noticed
this. Those who know Sanskrit just take
it for granted and bypass it as something
that needs to be recited at the end of
each chapter, whatever the reason may
be. But there is no redundant word in
the Bhagavad-Gita. There is nothing
that can be bypassed or considered
as introductory, just to be glossed
over. Even if there is a well-known
apostrophe—sribhagavan- uvaca—that
also has a meaning by itself.
What does the Bhagavad-Gita teach? It
teaches three things: brahmavidyayam
yogasastre srikrsnarjunasamvade. It is
repeatedly dinned into our ears what
the Gita teaches. The commentaries
on the Gita say that it teaches karma
yoga, raja yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga,
a synthesis of yoga, the art of living,
and whatnot. But the Gita itself tells us
what it teaches by a colophon, which is
in three words only: brahmavidyayam
yogasastre srikrsnarjunasamvade. These
three words mean theory, practice, and
realisation.
Brahma-vidya is the science of the
Absolute—that system of thinking which
is enabled to comprehend within itself
at any time the total structure of things.
To conceive the Absolute is to at once
take into consideration, in our processes
of thought, all things connected with the
object of thought—not only the inner
constituents of the object as such, but
also the relations that the object bears
to other objects. The reality of a thing is
not only in itself; it is also in that which
determines it, restricts it, influences it,
conditions it, defines it, and makes it
what it is.
Every individual is an entity by itself.
But this ‘being an entity by itself ’ is
not so simple a matter as it appears on
the surface. As human individuals, we
appear to be totally isolated persons,
and we stand by ourselves, unrelated to
things outside. We can be in our own
rooms, unnoticed and unconnected to
things. But, we are not unconnected
to things. The physical atmosphere,

atmosphere, and the psychological
atmosphere determine us. So even if we
are alone in our rooms, we do not forget
that our individuality is conditioned by
the presence of these laws of society, of
government, of physical nature, and of
the thoughts of people in general. Hence,

and total individuality by itself is not a
possibility.

of educating oneself in the manner
of correctly perceiving the world as
such, including one’s own self, in the

with timelessness, with eternity, with

Diwali is the time to rejoice
and introspect
As we are getting ready to celebrate Diwali next week, this will kick start the
festivities around Diwali.

As Indian, we all are aware of the reasons behind celebrating Diwali and the message
included in the celebration it, which is of joy, triumph of good over evil and that
of light over darkness, brotherhood and cohesiveness. The good thing happening
about this festival now is that as we the Indian diaspora going all over the globe are
taking this festival and culture everywhere, hence now Diwali has got a universal
recognition and acceptance. In New Zealand also, Diwali is now one of the biggest
crowd pulling occasion and has become an opportunity to showcase our culture and Here are some must visit
heritage to the world.

The five-day festival in India, which is celebrated every autumn in northern

hemisphere, is the most popular Hindu festival. It is celebrated with different names
in different parts of India. This festival falls on the darkest day of Hindu calendar on
Kartik Amavasya, which illuminates those earthen lamps or diyas lit on this occasion
and fills with sparkles. People clean their house, businesses places and decorate
them, wear new cloths and worship Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Ganesh, the
remover of all obstacles, on the day. The five-day festival has got a day for celebrating
the most sacred brother and sister relation as well which is known as Bhai- dooj.
For Hindus, the day after Diwali is also start of the new Hindu calendar year and
making new start of business ventures and doing all auspicious things. Traditionally,
in India people start their new accounts on this day, give bonuses to their employees,
distribute sweets to their friends, family members and seek blessings of their elders.
These days it is customary to decorate the shops, business places and markets
in India and lots of prizes given to shops and markets based on their quality of
decorations.
The other branches of Hinduism like Jains, Buddhist and Sikhs also celebrate Diwali
or Deepavali with different names and with different reason. Jains believe that on this
day the Lord Mahavir attained Nirvana or left his physical body, so they celebrate this
day as Nirvana Diwas and lit the lights on this day in remembrance of Lord Mahavira.

Hargobind ji and is celebrated as occasion of joy and happiness.
Traditionally, also the occasion of Diwali is the biggest time of the year for all the
businesses in India just like the Christmas time in western world. Pretty much
everyone according to their capacity would buy cloths, utensils, new furniture,
jewellery, sweets and other gifts for themselves and to gift to their families and
friends. In todays time just like any other festival, Diwali has been acquiring more
of economic consideration than religious or spiritual, but things do change with
changing time.

The Konark Sun Temple takes the form of a huge chariot for the sun god
Surya, with 12 pairs of stone-carved wheels and a team of seven galloping
horses.The temple also symbolizes the passage of time, which is under the
sun god's control. The temple is known for the exquisite stone carvings that
cover the entire structure.
Tirupati Temple
The deity here is popularly known as Lord Balaji popularly, and is believed
to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Tirupati Balaji Temple welcomes its
devotees with mesmerizing grandeur and soothing and calm surroundings at
the same time. The town seems to be blessed with an incomparable aura of
piousness and spirituality. Its majestic appearance and architectural beauty
captivate every visitor.

Today the festival of Diwali has got a recognition worldwide, beyond its religious

Diwali is an Indian festival that needs
no introduction anywhere in the world.
It is celebrated everywhere in the world
where Hindus live. Today as a result of
immigrants taking their culture to the
outside world and building temples
and celebrating festivals most countries
recognise the ‘Festival of Lights’. These
festivals have helped attract the attention
of normal society and take interest
in the Hindu spiritual ways. There is
now a growing population that classify
themselves as Hindus in countries
outside of India. We also hear names of
big Hollywood stars who have become
vegetarians and are learning to live
simpler lives and incorporating praying
and worship in their daily lives.
Individuals around the world are
becoming more aware of their spiritual
identity having a human body experience.
They are now seeing the truth about the
principles of Karma and reincarnation.
As Hindus settled abroad, how has our
family’s cultural knowledge and spiritual
progress been affected? What is Diwali
about? And what can we learn from
Lord Ram? The short version is that we
celebrate Diwali to welcome Lord Ram
back to Ayodhya from exile after killing
Ravan and rescuing his wife Sita. A story of
victory over evil and light over darkness.
However, that is not all we can we learn
from Ramayana. What was the true
purpose of the penning the epic by Valmiki
rishi? Lord Ram incarnates on earth not
for the purpose of destruction of evil
alone. He comes from many reasons that
we should know about. The following is a
summary of the lesser discussed reasons
of Lord Ram’s incarnation that will provide
some valuable insights to take home.
1) He came to protect his devotees from
forces of evil: To protect the demigods
form the demon king Ravan who
was terrorising the world, Lord Ram
incarnates himself with his entourage. He
protects surrendered souls like Sugriva
and Vibhishana and at the same time
awards them with wealth and fame. From
time to time evil forces become powerful
and Lord then takes the opportunity to
come himself to destroy them. It is not
that this cannot be done by his mere
glance. The mood is that of extreme love
and affection. The Lord personally wants
to reciprocate with his devotees to give
them joy and strength in their faith. As a
mother out of love personally wants make
food for her child or a father becomes a

horse to give his child a ride on his back.
Similarly, the lord personally comes to
reciprocate with them, to protect them
and destroy those that oppose them.
2) He came to establish principles
of religion: Lord Ram was called
Purushottam for his upholding of values
and principles and he showed what we
needed to do by his own behaviour. In
the Dwapar-yuga people were more
intelligent, they learnt by seeing and
copying the behaviour of the ideal leader.
Hence, the civilisation at that time were
more God conscious and happy. The
population of Kali-yuga is less intelligent
and surrounded by miseries. For them
Lord Krishna personally descended to
provide detailed instructions and hence
the Bhagvad Gita was spoken for people to
read and adopt in their life.
We must daily read at least one shloka
from the Gita to understand our purpose
of life.
3) He came to give his devotees the
opportunity to serve him: Hanuman the
greatest devotee of Lord Ram served his
Lord in so many ways. In the Ramayana
there is the inspiring story of the boat
man (Kevat), who would not pass by the
opportunity of personally washing the
feet of Lord Ram. Vibhishana the younger
brother of Lord Ram was suffered infamy
for the sake of opportunity to serve Lord
Ram.
All living entities have an innate desire
to serve and provide happiness to other
living beings. What better personality then
to serve, than the Lord himself, the source
of all creation.
4) He came to give his devotees
opportunity to glorify him: As a result
of his incarnation we have the story of
Ramayana. Just by hearing or speaking of
the glories of Ramayana we can gain so
much spiritual benefit. Two of the nine
processes of Bhakti that can award Mukti
or freedom from cycle of birth and death
is Shravanam (Listening to glories of Lord)
and Kirtanam (speaking Lords glories).
When Lord comes takes an avatar he does
so to create beautiful pastimes that are
lovely to hear and at the same providing
utmost spiritual benefit.
We must take interest in singing or
hearing or watching Lord’s pastimes. It is
the easiest way to make spiritual progress.
5) He came to glorify his devotees: If there
was no Ramayana we may not have heard
of the great devotee Hanuman. The story
of Laxman and Bharat are inspirations
for aspiring devotees and provide great
ideals in family life. The story of Sita
and her unflinching faith and chastity
has been inspiration to generations of
women. Without such beacons to light
the devotional path we would be lost in
darkness and Diwali would be more of a
commercial event as opposed to one of
spiritual reflections.
We should serve the devotees of the Lord
as pleasing the devotees pleases the Lord
himself.
So, let us make this festival of Diwali a little
different this time. Instead of acquiring
new clothes, let us acquire some new
books that will help dress our conscience
with new spiritual realisations that will
remain ever fresh. Instead of exchanging
sweets let us exchange some realisations
of the presence of Lord Ram in your life.
The realisations, I am sure will be sweeter
than sweets and will have a guaranteed
positive impact on your health and wealth.
Let us assess our current direction and
align ourselves with our spiritual goals.
Even small steps on this path will help
provide a better cultural identification
and spiritual anchoring for you and your
family.
During Laxmi puja remember Goddess
Laxmi is very fickle by nature and does not
stay anywhere too long. But if you have her
husband in your house and heart, she is
unlikely to leave.

Deepavali, “Array of Lights" symbolizes
the victory of brightness over darkness;
its most significant esoteric meaning
is "The Awareness of the Inner Light”.
The five days festival commences with
‘Dhan-Teras’ (13th Krishna Paksha,
Ashvin maas) and ends on ‘Bhaiduj’
(2nd Shukla Paksha, Kartika maas). The
main day of celebration varies regionally
which involves fireworks, lights,
flowers, sharing sweets, and worship to
symbolize hope and restoration. Some
use this occasion to strengthen family
and social relationships.
Origin of Deepavali - Mythology
Despite the regional variations, the
essence is the same that marks “the
victory of good over evil” to rejoice in
the Inner Light (Atma) which is the
underlying reality of all things.
• Sri Rama's coronation took place after
his victorious return to Ayodhya from
Lanka vanquishing Ravana and his
brood. In the absence of the effulgent
Rama, Ayodhya was a city of darkness.
The return of Rama was hailed by the
people of Ayodhya as the return of divine
effulgence and hence they celebrated
the event by the lighting of lamps
everywhere, hence named Deepavali.
The history behind
Deepavali - Ravinder Grover
• Thousands of years ago there was a
planet called Naraka which appeared
to be approaching close to the earth.
People were filled with dread of the
approaching catastrophe, hence
prayed to Lord Krishna for averting the
imminent disaster and to save them.
Krishna used His Prajna (extraordinary
knowledge) to destroy Naraka. This
extraordinary knowledge of Krishna was
termed Sathya. i.e., Krishna destroyed
Naraka in association with Sathya.
The residents of the world started
celebrating that day with lighting of
lamps and adoring the Lord who saved
them. That day of the Lord's triumph
was celebrated as a festive occasion as
Deepavali too.
• Another version, Narakasura
imprisoned thousands of princesses
and tortured innumerable women.
Unable to bear these indignities, the
women appealed to Krishna for help.
As Narakasura had inflicted sufferings
on women, he had to be punished by a
woman. For this reason, Krishna took
Sathyabhama with Him and destroyed
him in battle. Deepavali celebrates the
victory of Krishna over Narakasura. It
is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi.
The following day is Amavasya (New
Moon Day). Krishna freed 16,000 women
from prison and asked them to go back
to their respective homes. But all the
Gopikas fell at Krishna's feet and pleaded
that it would not be possible for them
to live in dignity in their old homes after
having been prisoners of Narakasura,
and they would prefer to end their lives
at His feet rather than to go back. "You
are the Protector of the Universe; can't
you protect us?" they pleaded. Krishna
agreed to protect them. Because of the
pledge He gave to them that He would
bear the responsibility for protecting
them, He was called their Bharta
(Supporter). This has been wrongly
interpreted as meaning that He was
their husband. It is a libel on Krishna to
say that He married 16,000 Gopikas.
• Deepavali is the day when Lord in His
Vamana incarnation sent the Emperor
Bali to the Nether World after He had
got the promise of three feet of ground
(measured by the Lord's foot) from Bali.
Vamana (as the incarnation of Vishnu)
used the gift of three feet of land to
put down the Ahamkara (egoism) of
Bali. Bali is described as Chakravarthi
(sovereign lord).
• Deepavali was the day on which
Emperor Vikramaditya ascended the
throne.
• As per Skanda Purana, the Goddess
Shakti observed 21 days of austerity
starting from Ashtami of Shukla Paksha
(8th day of the waxing moon) to get half
of the body of Lord Shiva. This Vrata
(vow) of austerity is known as ‘Kedhara
Vrata’. Deepavali is the completion
day of this austerity. This is the day
Lord Shiva accepted Shakti into the
left half of the form and appeared as
Ardhanarishvara.
Inner Meaning of Deepavali
The Vedic Prayer, “Thamasoma Jyotir
Gamaya” (Lead me from Darkness to
Light) means light is needed where
there is darkness. What is this darkness?
Sorrow is one form of darkness. Loss
of Peace is another. Disappointment
is one form of darkness. Misery is yet
another. Lack of enthusiasm is another.
All these are different forms of darkness.
To get rid of the darkness of sorrow, you
have to Light the Lamp of happiness. To
dispel the darkness of disease, you have
to install the light of health. To get over
the darkness of losses and failures, you
have to usher in the light of prosperity.
Deepavali is a festival which is designed
to celebrate the suppression of the Ego
by the Higher Self. Man is plunged in
darkness of ignorance and has lost the
power of discrimination between the
permanent and the transient. When
the darkness of ignorance caused by
Ahamkara (ego) is dispelled by the light
of Divine knowledge, the effulgence of
the Divine is experienced. Lead me
from the blindness of ignorance into the
vision of the Truth. Cleanse the mind
and the Truth will be reflected therein.
There is something beyond the physical
body and mind which is pure, infinite,
and eternal, called the Atma. Just as we
celebrate the birth of our physical being,
Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner
Light, the knowing of which outshines
all darkness (removes all obstacles and
dispels all ignorance), awakening the
individual to one's true nature, not as
the body, but as the unchanging, infinite,
immanent and transcendent reality.
With the realization of the Atma, come
universal compassion, love, and the
awareness of the oneness of all things
(higher knowledge) that brings Ananda
(Bliss).

Deepavali occurs on a new moon day
when it is approaching the longest
spell of dark night during the southern
solstice in the northern hemisphere.
Thus it is an apt time to shed the
darkness by lighting lamps inside and
outside our homes. It is an ideal time to
kindle those principles within us that
can bring a significant difference to the
way we live.
Traditional practices provide us with a
subtle wakeup call and pulls ourselves
together quickly to face reality without
fear. The message that Deepavali (rows
of lights) holds is phenomenal - “Kindle
the spirit of enthusiasm and strength
within your heart even while going
through the darkest moments of your
life”.
Stress, fear and anxiety are becoming
part and parcel of our lives and it is
disheartening to note that mental
health issues have increased. The
current competitive environment is
compelling individuals to strive for high
achievements and financial power as
a form of success. As a result we are
loaded with more activity in the part
of the brain that regulates stress and

GULAB JAMUN MAKES 20- 24 PARIPPU PAYASAM SERVES 4

Ingredients:
100 gram khoya (firmly 2 tbsp milk (mixed with
packed) a little water)
1 tbsp refined flour or 4 green cardamoms
semolina (slightly crushed)
1/4 tsp baking soda Ghee (enough to fill a

2 cups water 1 slice of bread (cubed)

Directions
1. With the heel of your palm or the base of a flat
metal bowl, knead the khoya until smooth & firm.

Speaking to ANI, the temple priest
Prabhakar said, "It is believed that
today is the birth as well as the
death anniversary of Ravana. In the
morning we do pujas to mark his birth
anniversary and his accomplishments
as a scholar. In the evening, we burn
an effigy which represents the egoistic
Ravana and conduct another puja,
following which the temple is shut for
the rest of the year."
While Dussehra marks Lord Rama's
slaying of Ravana, Vijaydashami,
prevalent in eastern and southern parts
of India, marks the victory of goddess
Durga over the invincible buffalo demon,
Mahishasura.

4. Submit your Life Certificate timely:
The Pension accounts usually remain
active if Annual Life Certificate is
submitted in time. So, the people, who
are getting some pension in India,
should remember to submit their Life
Certificate in time. They can easily
submit it online from here itself under
JEEVAN PRAMAAN scheme of Govt. of
India if they have Aadhar linked with
their bank account, otherwise they have
to submit the usual paper certificate.
5. Know bank charges and rules: Every
bank levies some charges for certain
transactions and maintenance of
account. Customers are also required to
maintain a minimum balance in their
accounts. Most of us often ignore these
charges and the rules for maintaining
the minimum balance. Customers
should keep in mind various bank
charges and the minimum balance they
have to maintain in such cases.
6. Keep your KYC current: Always give
your latest address, phone/mobile
number and email to the bank. In case
of NRE/NRO accounts give both Indian
and oversees addresses and contact
numbers. It will ensure safe and smooth
operation of your accounts and facilitate
secure online transactions. Also link
your PAN to your bank accounts if you
have taxable income in India.
7. If you have a Safe Deposit locker in
the bank, make arrangement to pay its
annual rent in time. Try to operate the
locker at least once a year and check
the contents. It is also advisable to keep
a list, photos and invoices of valuables
stored in it, if possible.
8. Pay your loans in time: If you have any
loan accounts in banks in India, then
keep these in order by regular payments
as agreed. Make careful diary notes of
due amount and dates, Net Banking will
come very handy in keeping a watch
on conduct of your loan accounts.
Also keep in mind that most NRI loans
are usually required to be repaid by
remittances from abroad.
9. Submit Form 15G/15H, in April each
year, if you don’t want the bank to
deduct the tax at source on your interest
income in case your total income in
India doesn’t exceed the exempted limit.
However for senior citizens having
interest income from bank deposits
up to INR 50000.00 there is no need to
submit this form.
Last but not the least; if you are a NRI
having a non resident tax status in
India, it is advisable to convert all your
resident accounts in to Non Resident
Ordinary accounts to comply with the
India’s Foreign Exchange Management
Act, 1999. Although there is no time
limit prescribed for this conversion of
accounts, but still it is desirable to do
so, as soon as possible, after one settles
abroad and becomes a non-resident
Indian.

Durga Pooja: The idol that is never immersed
Durga Pooja is the most anticipated
festival in West Bengal, one of the many
reasons for the wait is the grandeur
that it brings along. The festival which
is celebrated over a span of at least five
days witnesses the city of Kolkata at its
best - adorned with lights and Pandals
which often have a message to convey.
Over the years, theme-based pandals
have been the talking point in Kolkata.
The Pandals draw inspiration from
many aspects ranging from politics to
social issues. However, what is losing its
essence is the traditional Durga Pooja.
The divide between the traditional Pooja
and the modern theme-based Pooja
becomes distinct if one takes a round
of the pandals in the southern part of
the city, and moves to the north, which
is known for clutching on to the rituals
and the traditions of the Pooja.
One such Durga Pooja can be witnessed
in the Haldar household in North
Kolkata's Baghbazaar area. What makes
Haldar pooja stand out is the fact
that this is the only place where the
idol of Durga is never immersed and
is worshipped all-round the year. The
history attached to the Haldar Durga
Pooja is rich and intriguing. The idol is
said to be almost 1000 years old and was
found 14 feet under the ground by one
of the Haldar forefathers somewhere in
Odisha and is known to have survived
the Mughal era.
The Idol has been since worshipped
by the Haldars for more than 400
years, since the excavation. The idol at
Haldarbari is made of "Kasthipathar"
(Philosopher's Stone) instead of clay.
Regarding the excavation of the idol, Dr.
Partha Sarathi, the eldest grandson of
the Haldar Household said, "One of the
forefathers of the Haldar family went
for a trip to a palace named Sahebpur
located near Balasore of Odisha.
During his stay, some of the people who
accompanied him dreamt of a Goddess
instructing them to excavate her idol
buried about 14 feet deep beneath the
earth inside the house of a Muslim
fisherman. The Goddess also instructed
to worship her daily."
Following the divine order, the
excavation was carried out and the idol
of Devi Durga was recovered in perfect
condition, unlike many other idols of
that time.
Similar idols can be seen at British
Museum, Chandannagar Museum and
Institute as well as the Kolkata Museum,
however, those idols are not in an
unscathed condition.
Debasis Haldar, one of the eldest
members of the household recalled
some of the legends associated with
the Pooja. One of them is regarding
the recovery of a Navaratna (Nine
Gems) amulet which has been with
the household since ages. "There is

residence which is used during worship
of the Goddess. It is sometimes kept
under the feet of the Goddess and
sometimes in the offering container (
Barandala ) of the Goddess. After the
untimely demise of one of the family
members, it was decided to sell off
the amulet. The amulet was then sold.
However, after three days the man who
bought the amulet came back to return
the amulet saying that he received a
divine message from the Goddess in
his dream to return the amulet. The
gentleman handed it back and even
refused to take the money that he paid
for it," he said.
Scores of people pour in every year to
witness the rituals and offer prayers to
the Goddess Durga in Hakderbari. The
'Sondhi' Pooja of the Halder household,
which takes place on Ashtami, is one of
the major attractions for many. On this
day, the "Durga Dalan" or the Corridor
is elaborately decorated with 108 lotus
flowers and an equal number of lamps.
The members of the family said that the
design for the arrangement of the 108
lamps is conveyed to the eldest member
through divine intervention.
The celebrations end with Sindur Khela
on the day of Maha Dashami, after
which the idol is placed facing the West
for daily worship.

organise a joint celebration of Diwali and Chanukah
as the "Festival of Lights" in the Chicago city on

miraculously lasted eight days. Since then, the
festival is observed for eight nights and days in the
month of November or December by lighting the
candles of a candelabrum.
Similarly, Hindu festival Diwali is celebrated to
mark the triumph of good over evil and light over
darkness. During the celebration, temples, homes,
shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.

Hockey India congratulates Surender Kumar on
completing 100 international caps
Hockey India has congratulated defender
Surender Kumar for achieving the
milestone of playing 100 international
caps for the country.
The 24-year-old achieved the feat during
their third match against Japan at the
ongoing 5th edition of Men's Asian
Champions Trophy Muscat.
General Secretary of Hockey India,
Rajinder Singh, while congratulating
Kumar, praised him for showing a
consistent progress in his game.
"On behalf of Hockey India, I would like
to congratulate Surender Kumar on
completing 100 International Caps for
the country. He is a young player who has
developed well through the ranks and I am
happy to see his progress as he is regularly
involved with the senior team now," Singh
said.
"Surender has proven to be an added
resource to the Indian defence. I would
like to wish him the best for the future, and
hope to see him achieve wonderful things
with the Indian team," he added.

been involved in my development which

prevalence of obesity as an epidemic.

children in the OECD, and our rates
are rising. Almost 1 in 3 adult New
Zealanders (over 15 years) is obese, and
1 in 10 children.
Why is obesity a concern?

the body as fat.
Although some people are more prone
to weight gain than others, the increase
in the number of people who are obese
in recent years has occurred too quickly
to be explained by genetic changes. Most
experts now believe that this 'obesity
epidemic' is caused by our modern
lifestyle, which promotes over-eating/
drinking and limits opportunities for
physical activity.
How is obesity measured?
Body mass index (BMI) is a commonly
used measure that can be used to
estimate if you are in the healthy weight
range for your height and ethnicity.
Your BMI is calculated by dividing your
weight in kilograms by your height in
metres squared (kg/m2).

There is need to talk about sexuality
A recent study has found that stroke
survivors struggle to openly discuss
sexuality, while health professionals
rarely address the topic during
rehabilitation.
According to the research, Stroke
survivors and their partners are not
adequately supported to deal with
changes to their relationships, self-
identity, gender roles, and intimacy
following a stroke.
The finding is supported by data stating
that as few as 15 percent of patients
receive information on intimate
relations post-stroke, despite clinical
guideline recommendations.
Dr Margaret McGrath, lead author of the
study said, "Issues around post-stroke
sexuality and where to seek support are
rarely discussed with stroke survivors
or their loved ones despite numerous
interactions with medical, rehabilitation
and counselling staff."
"Sexuality and disability is viewed as
a taboo topic so stroke survivors don't
know how to talk about it and health
professionals don't ask the questions,"
McGrath added.
According to the researchers, this is
problematic as sexuality, which includes
so much more than just sex, is an
essential part of human experience and
strongly with linked with emotional and
mental health.
A stroke survivor, discussing this issues
said, "But that (stroke) doesn't change
the essence of who I am or what I want
before and after. It only changes what I
can do. It doesn't change what I want."
The systematic review collated several
studies to explore the experiences of
almost 650 male and female stroke
survivors ranging from 20 to 105 years
of age, as well as the experiences of 283
partners.
Using a broad definition of sexuality,
the study explores dimensions
such as gender roles and identity,
presentation of self to others, sexual
expression, intimacy, relationships, and
reproduction.
For couples in a relationship before
the stroke, physical and cognitive
impairment, communication difficulties
and post-stroke fatigue meant that pre-
