Su primer libro fue Naturaleza (1836), un año después apareció 'El estudioso
americano', discurso pronunciado ante la Phi Beta Kappa Society de Harvard.
Un segundo discurso, denominado 'Discurso al College de Divinity'
pronunciado en 1838 ante los licenciados del Divinity College de la Universidad
de Cambridge, levantó controversia ya que atacaba a la religión oficial y
defendía la experiencia religiosa intuitiva e independiente.
