The Challenge
The client required a solution to replace their on-stream
tank inspection with a new technique that would be able
to determine corrosion on the annual floor plates. The
inspection was necessary to highlight areas of potential
concern to allow the planning of repair works during an
upcoming shutdown. The key area of concern was the first

lead time.
The Solution
A phased array inspection plan was developed that
enabled the inspection to be developed in situ.
A validation piece was constructed with the same
material and geometry with artificial reflectors to
simulate the expected damage mechanism.
3 Flare Tower Modelling - Photogrammetry
The Challenge
Applus+ was requested to perform photogrammetry modelling on an emergency flare tower for a client in
order to determine critical measurements connecting the riser stub to the main structure of the tower.
Measurements were also required at incremental elevations to determine the position of support beams
running vertically down the tower.
Alternative methods would involve using ground based LiDAR or employing a rope access team to physically take
measurements. LiDAR would have difficulty retrieving data from such a far distance and use of a rope access
team would require the flare to be shut down.
The Solution
Applus+ utilised a Microdrone Md4-1000 UAV
equipped with a Sony 42mp full frame camera
and 55mm lens to capture 3600 high resolution
photographs of the tower. This data collection
work scope was completed within 4 days whilst
the area was online.
The Result
Using photogrammetry modelling, a digital twin of the flare tower was successfully reconstructed resulting
in significant time and cost savings. The flare tower model can also be used for further inspections improving
efficiency in the future.
