CVEEN 6305, INTRODUCTION TO FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

HOMEWORK 3

HONOR PLEDGE:
On my honor as a student of the University of Utah, I have neither given nor received
unauthorized aid on this assignment.

Name (Print) Signature Date

All homework assignments must meet the formatting and style requirements for the Department of
Civil & Environmental Engineering. A summary of these requirements is given on p. 4 of the course
syllabus, with details provided in the style guide (Homework Requirements.pdf). Both the syllabus and
style guide can be downloaded from the course website at the following URL:
http://www.civil.utah.edu/~cv5305/
Attach this assignment sheet with your name and signature to the front of your completed assignment,
or on the first page of your assignment, write out the honor pledge shown above and sign it.

Note: In all stress transformation problems for which you determine the stresses on a plane of
unknown orientation, show your answers on a small element indicating the direction of the
plane, as well as the directions and magnitudes of the stresses acting on it.

Do the following problems from the textbook, including any clarifications or additions noted:

4-13 Solve using the Pole Method only

4-19

4-20 Only parts c and d are required. Use the equations given on Handout 2.

Also do the following problems:

Problem 1

For the state of stress shown in the figure below, determine the magnitudes and directions of the
normal and shearing stresses acting on the horizontal plane (h and h ) analytically using statics by
summing forces in the horizontal and vertical directions (or any other two axes of your choice). Give
your answers to 3 decimal places. Hint: Set the area of the horizontal plane on which h and h act to
1 and find the areas of the other two planes using the Law of Sines. (Partial Answer: h = 0.018 ← )

Problem 2

Perform the tasks shown below for the element with the stresses indicated in the figure below. Use the
appropriate equations on pp. 117-118 of the textbook.

a. Find the major and minor principal stresses and the directions of the planes on which they act.
b. Determine the stresses on a plane inclined at 30° from horizontal as shown in the figure.
c. Determine the value of the maximum shearing stress and the orientation of the plane on which it
acts.
