Being a teacher is much more than just executing lesson plans. In today's world, teaching is

a multifaceted profession; teachers often carry the roles of a surrogate parent, class

disciplinarian, mentor, counselor, bookkeeper, role model, planner, and many other related

roles.

Elementary school teachers play an important role in the development of students. What

students learn in their formative years can shape the men and women they will become.

Teachers play vital roles in the lives of the students in their classrooms. Teachers are best

known for the role of educating the students that are placed in their care. Beyond that,

teachers serve many other roles in the classroom. Teachers set the tone of their classrooms,

build a warm environment, mentor and nurture students, become role models, and listen

and look for signs of trouble.

As we went to the MCD school we observed that what we could observe by what we saw

was that the teacher would explain something and then give time to the students to write it

down.

A teacher of 3rd standard had given the task of making a clock to the students from

cardboard which one student had made very creatively .The teacher appreciated his efforts

in front of the whole class which would have given his confidence a boost . But all the
students couldn't complete the tasks , the teacher also told us that if a task like this is given

then the material is provided from their side so it doesn't cause a financial burden.

Such creative tasks develop the urge to learn amongst the children because it develops

interest. But most of the classes we saw were still following the same old procedures where

they just make the students to copy whatever is written on the board which is not a good

way to teach. There was a teacher who was of the opinion that the students who come

here are already under a lot of stress so he used to explain everything in class and didn't

give any homework.

Finally regarding the assessment , we all talk about the concept of checking the daily

progress of a student through various day to day activities but here again we see the same

traditional approach being followed where just your unit tests and final exams decide how

bright the student is .The focus is still on rote learning which by no means is the way ahead.

We need to make changes that we talk about to build better future for the children

There was a concept of 'Bag Free Saturday' , a day in a week which was supposed to be a

day without books and included activities like drawing, poem recitation which is a new step

to attract the learners. It serves as a deviation from daily routine of the school and will help

the child to have a fresh beginning of the new week. One thing that we all observed in

these 5 days was that after the mid day meal distribution the teachers didn't use to teach

the students seriously, and allowed the children to do anything and did their personal

work .So whatever worth was taught to children was before the mid day meal.

If we talk about Mirambika, where teachers are referred to as ‘diyas’. Diyas were seen

sitting in the sunken area narrating stories and reciting poems, the children often sitting on

their Diyas’ laps or climbing on their backs. The areas of work for older groups have tables
and chairs arranged in a circular manner to facilitate interaction during group discussion.

Since the children do not carry books home, each one has an individual cupboard (for

keeping books, copies, pens, pencils etc.). The teacher should have an intimate knowledge

of the mind and character of each child. She should maintain the psychological records of

each child’s development in order to have a proper knowledge of his pupils. The

psychological records should include the information about the pupil’s weight, height and

other measurements. He/She should have faith in the personality of the child. The directress

should allow the child to grow accordingly to his inner law.In this regard, her primary duty is

to provide the children with a suitable environment so that they think for themselves.he

soul of the child is pure and sensitive and requires the gentlest handling. It is on the part of

the directress that should protect and direct the soul of the child in a proper way.

Imparting Knowledge to children

The most common role a teacher plays in the classroom is to teach knowledge to children.

Teachers are given a curriculum they must follow that meets state guidelines. This

curriculum is followed by the teacher so that throughout the year, all pertinent knowledge

is dispensed to the students. Teachers teach in many ways including lectures, small group

activities and hands-on learning activities.

Creating Classroom friendly Environment

Teachers also play an important role in the classroom when it comes to the environment.

Students often mimic a teacher’s actions. If the teacher prepares a warm, happy

environment, students are more likely to be happy. An environment set by the teacher can

be either positive or negative. If students sense the teacher is angry, students may react

negatively to that and therefore learning can be impaired. Teachers are responsible for the
social behavior in their classrooms. This behavior is primarily a reflection of the teacher’s

actions and the environment she sets.

Role Modeling

Teachers typically do not think of themselves as role models, however, inadvertently they

are. Students spend a great deal of time with their teacher and therefore, the teacher

becomes a role model to them. This can be a positive or negative effect depending on the

teacher. Teachers are there not only to teach the children, but also to love and care for

them. Teachers are typically highly respected by people in the community and therefore

become a role model to students and parents. The teacher should have moral qualities and

she must be a lady of patience, love and humility. She must banish anger which is a great sin

that prevents her from understanding the child. So,she must possess moral qualities and

develop them to undertake the task of teaching in the Montessori method.

Mentorship

Mentoring is a natural role taken on by teachers, whether it is intentional or not. This again

can have positive or negative effects on children. Mentoring is a way a teacher encourages

students to strive to be the best they can. This also includes encouraging students to enjoy

learning. Part of mentoring consists of listening to students. By taking time to listen to what

students say, teachers impart to students a sense of ownership in the classroom. This helps

build their confidence and helps them want to be successful.

Identifying the signs of difficulty

Another role played by teachers is a protector role. Teachers are taught to look for signs of

trouble in the students. When students’ behaviors change or physical signs of abuse are
noticed, teachers are required to look into the problem. Teachers must follow faculty

procedures when it comes to following up on all signs of trouble.

Being a semi-parent

The role of a teacher is clearly more than just planning and executing lesson plans. In some

senses, because the teacher spends so much time with the students, she or he can become

the student's third parent. Teachers can be a constant positive role model for their students,

particularly for children that lack a solid family foundation.

Of course, the teacher's role as a semi-parent depends to a large extent on the age and

grade of the children they teach. The kindergarten teacher develops basic skills in her

children that are necessary to excel and progress to the next year, while a teacher in the

intermediate grades teaches specific information about a particular subject.

Being a constant supporter

Students are the ones who need support when learning a new skill or piece of information.

A teacher must act as the support person when the student needs this help. Support can

come in many forms such as a coach, leader and even a counselor. In professional circles, a

teacher may even have to support other teachers leading a particular subject matter.

Being a constant learner

Anyone who has been involved in a profession long enough knows that there is always

something new to learn. A learner is a person who is always growing in life and will never

claim that they know it all. A teacher will be challenged everyday with a new task that will

help them grow into a better person.

A teacher is a person who will have to fill many roles. They are people with educational

leadership skills and they must continue to grow and develop as professionals. Anyone
seeking to be a teacher should take advantage of any chance they get to grow as a person

and as a teacher.

Every career has its own level of responsibility, and it's perfectly reasonable to expect

teachers to meet their professional obligations and responsibilities. Doctors, lawyers and

other professionals operate with similar responsibilities and expectations for patient and

client privacy. But society often holds teachers to an even higher standard because of their

position of influence with children. It's clear that children learn best with positive role

models who demonstrate the types of behavior that lead to personal success.

Though written in 1910, the words of Chauncey P. Colegrove in his book "The Teacher and

the School" still ring true today:

No one can justly expect that all teachers, or any teacher, shall be endlessly patient, free

from mistakes, always perfectly just, a miracle of good temper, unfailingly tactful, and

unerring in knowledge. But people have a right to expect that all teachers shall have fairly

accurate scholarship, some professional training, average mental ability, moral character,

some aptness to teach, and that they shall covet earnestly the best gifts.
