D. Bosco parlando ai giovani di questa regione soggiunse: - Vi dirò con
Santa Teresa ciò che essa affermò delle cose del paradiso: sono cose che
col parlarne si avviliscono, perchè sono così belle che è inutile sforzarsi
a descriverle. Quindi osserverò solamente che gli stipiti di quelle case pare-
ano di oro, di cristallo, di diamante tutt’insieme, sicchè sorprendevano,
appagavano la vista infondevano allegrezza. I campi erano ripieni d’alberi
sui quali si vedevano contemporaneamente fiori, bottoni, frutta matura e
frutta verde. Era un incanto magnifico.
I giovani si sparsero pel paese chi di qua e chi di là, chi per una cosa, chi
per l’altra, poichè grande era la loro curiosità e il desiderio di avere di
quella frutta.
D. Bosco ebbe qui un’altra strana sorpresa. I suoi giovani gli apparvero ad
un tratto come divenuti vecchi; senza denti, pieni di rughe in volto, coi
capelli bianchi, curvi, zoppicanti, appoggiati al bastone. D. Bosco si mar-
avigliava di questa metamorfosi, ma la voce gli disse: - Tu ti meravigli; ma
hai da sapere che non sono già poche ore dacchè sei partito dalla valle, ma
sono anni ed anni. È quella musica che ti ha fatto parer corto il cammino.
In prova, guarda la tua fisionomia e ti persuaderai se io dico il vero. - E a
D. Bosco venne presentato uno specchio. Egli si specchiò e vide che il suo
aspetto era d’uomo attempato, coi volto rugoso, e coi denti guasti e pochi.
