Lessons Learned

Once in my life, opportunity knocked in the midst of my troubled academic life. It was an unexpected and unplanned call for experiences and lessons. However,
with the desire to learn and thirst to see the actuality of the profession, I opened the door of unanticipated opportunity, grabbed it and tried to risk on how will I
live and perform outside the school. From Balara to BGC projects, I have learned and experienced to see, to listen, to speak, to know, to act and to be the
person who I am and who I want to be in a developed and professional manner. I have gained knowledge on technical aspects and I have been enlightened on
the professional, moral and life lessons. From Balara pavilion and BGC condo fit-out projects, I was able to learn the following:

TO SEE
See things from different perspective and scale. There’s no such thing as small and less important because everything has a purpose and creates ripple effect.
See things with legal equivalence. Actually, everything has legal equivalence especially in the industry. Everything matters legally – time, quality and cost. Every
single thing whether material object, work, and word could be evidence against me and others. I have to be cautious all the time.
See people differently. There are numerous types of people that God made and sent us that will either make or break us. Looks, behavior and abilities can be
deceiving. If someone seems great at one thing, I should not be blinded by trusting his/her words until proven through actions and that he/she is consistent all
throughout. At least, having doubt is not bad; sometimes it is helpful to get to the right one. It is highly important to scrutinize someone’s intention.

TO LISTEN
Listen to my only leader/senior. There may be other people in the team that needs my service but it doesn’t mean that he/she is also my leader. There is only
one leader/superior. “No one can serve two masters.” I shall never get confused and forget the top and only person that I should listen to. Aside from self, I
should wisely trust my senior, too. I should not be complacent even for once. I have to be coachable by listening, assessing and applying my learnings.
Moreover, I should be mindful of what I’m doing so I would know if I’m still on the path that my senior is leading me to.
Listen to my right judgment. Listen to my good inner voice. Learn to believe in self. It is most important to trust self than (or more than) anyone else. I have to
believe that I can make a right judgment by focusing on my goal. Although, trusting self in making right decision/s has to be objective that is supported by facts.
Listen and be inspired to people with principles in life. Principles and biblical words are our life map while journeying or doing our mission here on earth. There
are people who are instruments of evangelization even within the professional field. It is not a contrary case. A satisfied and successful person has to have a
balanced moral, professional and spiritual life.

TO SPEAK
Speak and act as a good leader. It is overwhelming to be given an authority to lead at young age but it should be done with humility. However, humility doesn’t
equate to shyness. Age, educational or professional attainment doesn’t matter. As long as we know how to treat people well, nothing is to be shy or afraid of.
Given with authority to a certain task is not being a commander or just giving orders, it is about leadership. A good leader leads and manages the members well.
Speak the truth. It is essential to be open and honest all the time. It’s a key to a long lasting relationship. Honesty makes everything fall into the right place.
Enhance communication and have broad understanding. Communication is a widespread problem and solution. A good and clear communication and broad
understanding make things/situations/discussions go easy and light. It is the best ingredient to a successful relationship and work.

TO KNOW
Know everything – be curious. Whenever there is a question, confusion or trouble, ask/ research multiple times if needed just to make sure that all information
is accurate. It’s okay to be curious with superior’s instructions, just make sure to clear it by asking about it to avoid confusion and create trouble in the future. It
is important to be observant, curious and mindful on everything. It is essential to study and memorize every detail from drawings to actual with all of mind, heart
and soul. Doing this will prevent conflicts from the very start. The quote “prevention is better than cure” is most necessary to apply as it’s not just the cost of
materials, labor or project itself is being risked but also the life of all users both during and after construction phase.
Know what is right and wrong practice. Be smart and alert. Not all great people are actually good-minded and good-hearted. Not all (seem) wise men are men of
integrity. Not all people who give full effort are doing what is right. It would be helpful to be aware on the actions of all the people in the surrounding.

TO ACT/DO
Do comprehensive planning and follow it strictly. Plan activities and schedule from micro to macro details comprehensively. Be ready always with back-up. After
planning, it is needed to make sure that the plan is being followed accordingly. Schedule must be controlled not vice versa. Be strict all the time…to everyone.
Do creative and organized solution. Aside from intelligence, it is best to use and enhance creativity in doing things that will protect the work and materials in the
project (site). Reasonable creativity and systematic ways could make things work fast, easy and safe.
Initiate to do things within control. Sometimes, instinct tells the truth. When something seems so wrong, it will surely go wrong. Never allow to push through
works if not fully sure. Sometimes, second and more chances are also an opportunity to repeat the same mistake. It is best to consider it and act accordingly
within our control that could help in prevention and preparation. Let us not settle on an OKAY output, make sure it is the RIGHT one. It is important to make
things clear from the very start on what will be within my control like the scope of work or responsibilities, goals and project details that will guide me to
contemplate and perform my duty well.
Separate personal being/life from professional. At early age, it is necessary to know the real difference of personal and professional life in terms of concerns
and behaviors. Emotions are one of the most pressing concerns when it comes to personal issue. If emotions cannot be handled well, there is a big chance that
self could be distracted and disoriented in professional life.

TO BE
Be PURE. Focus on my real purpose which is to protect and serve my/our client’s interests and properties that are being entrusted to us. Also, focus on my role
as an assistant architect – the assistant that my senior architect needs me to be and the architect that the project/client I am needed to be especially when my
senior is not around. Being pure is somehow being untouchable by any external forces that could distract and disorient me from my goal. Achieving this will
likely make me remain calm that will make me think and perform wisely. Getting panicked means being distracted already and that makes me vulnerable.
Be a practical perfectionist. Perfectionism is helpful but not always and not applicable to all situations. It is somehow helpful in terms of inspection as perfection
is being aimed for every work. On the other hand, it is not applicable like when it comes to drawings especially during initial stage because it will certainly
undergo multiple revisions. In doing tasks, it is better to do and finish task one at a time especially if I cannot handle them all together. It might worsen the
situation if being forced to be done altogether but with many mistakes or errors.
Be punctual all the time. Time is gold. Value time for every person has own life and commitments. By being early or on-time to all meetings and submissions is a
great manifestation of respect to each other. Also, be mindful that every tick of clock has a corresponding cost, it may be in form of monetary or opportunity.
Be committed. By having commitment is by having obligations from start until the end. Being committed requires faithfulness, full determination, hard work and
dedication to the work. In times of despair, it is the great challenge if someone is truly committed to the work, team and project.
Be the right architect. To be honest, I’ve never imagined the greatness of an architect until I have witnessed and experienced it. I know now that I should be the
architect that this world needs me to be; the good and right architect of every home.

My experiences in these two projects are challenging. It is like I’ve started from scratch. Blessed I am that I was given an opportunity to at least start few but
important content to that scratch. I know I have gained a lot but the things listed above likely summarize them all. I didn’t realize that I have actually learned
those things. Above else, it is really a great need for someone to have time for a deep reflection of self every now and then. It is also a great need to focus on
what should I really need to do. Now that the last project is about to end, I think I have to focus on the lessons. I have to put in my mind, heart and soul that
lessons do not just make the life of an individual beautiful by just knowing it. By living what is known, every lesson sets as a foundation and everlasting guide in
every individual’s character and performance. It also serves as the light to the path towards the truth, goodness, peace & the most is towards our beloved God.
