AN INTRODUCTION TO JAKARTA:
INTERNATIONAL & NATIONAL PLUS SCHOOLS
International Schools in Jakarta are mostly of high qualities, offering either worldwide
known International Baccaulaureate Curriculum or the Cambridge IGCSE qualifications. Scattered
throughout the Capital of Indonesia, International Schools are nowadays catered not only to
expatriates children, but also to Indonesian students, seeking access to different types of
international programs as an alternative to the national curriculum.
Around mid 1990s, the Indonesian Department of Education and Culture began to open
opportunities for institutions which are later recognised as ‘National Plus’ Schools. This unofficial
term refers to a school that offers education beyond the minimum requirements of the national
Indonesian accreditation authorities.
In general, the National Plus schools offer some subjects taught in English rather than in
Indonesian, may provide some native English speakers on staffs or just like the International Schools,
may offer international curriculums such as IGCSE or the IB. Admission is open to expatriate children
and reviewed by parents as a great alternative to the more expensive international schools.
As the numbers of International and National Plus Schools are increasing rapidly in
Jakarta, it is very important to review and verify the type of accreditations which the schools have,
to ensure the teaching quality of the institutions involved.
Hence, there are several factors in presenting these following particular International or
National Plus Schools, and they are:

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNATIONAL
BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM
Web: www.ibo.org
Founded in 1968, the IB programme works with 3,395 schools in 141 countries to develop
and offer three challenging programmes to over 1 million students. Hence, in order to become an IB
World School, a school needs to have certain traits, such as: sharing the mission and commitment of
the IB to quality international education, having been authorized by the IB to offer one or more IB
programmes, playing an active and supporting role in the worldwide community of IB schools,
sharing their knowledge and experience in the development of the IB programmes, and committing
to the professional development of teachers.
“...As a former IB Student and a holder of IB Bilingual Diploma myself, I truly believe that
IB had opened many doors for me to excellent Universities in the US and the UK, and has a superb
educational standards which gain recognitions from top Universities around the world.” - Devina
• IB programmes are recognized around the world and ensure an increased adaptability and
mobility for IB students. Moreover, the curriculum and pedagogy of IB programmes focus on
international perspectives of learning and teaching, while insisting that students fully explore their
home culture and language.
• IB World Schools must undergo an exhaustive authorization process in order to offer one
or more of the programmes, which includes a study of the school’s resources and commitment to
the IB mission and philosophy.
• Many students graduating from the Diploma Programme find that it enhances their
opportunities at tertiary institutions. The IB works closely with universities around the world to
gain recognition for IB programmes.
• The core components of IB programmes encourage students to participate in creative and
service-oriented activities, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of reflection on a
personal and academic level.

KEMANG
Situated in Southern part of Jakarta, Kemang was originally designed to be a serene residential area.
Hence, the area recently has been developed into a strategic commercial area targeting the expatriates and
the high-income Jakartans. Along Kemang Raya, you will be able to find restaurants serving local and
international food (Turkish, American, Arabian, Indian, French, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, etc), cafes,
bookstores, wine lounges, hobby shops, art galleries, furniture stores, high-end boutiques, antiques stores,
duty-free shop, day spa, yoga place, and supermarkets that carries organic produces and imported products.
What differentiates Kemang from the other commercial areas in Jakarta is its resemblance to Bali's
atmosphere. Somehow, this area has a laid back and peaceful atmosphere compared to other parts of Jakarta.
No other area in Jakarta is as unique as Kemang with its touches of international lifestyle. It is an area that is
most popular among the expatriate community.
It is home to some 18,000 Indonesians and more than 1,600 foreigners, mostly Australian, Korean,
Japanese and European. According to official data, some 36,000 foreigners lived in Jakarta in 2004. Many of
them lived in South Jakarta. Kemang used to have the highest number of expatriates, but today more
7
expatriates live in Pondok Indah. Living costs in Kemang are also a bit higher than in other places. Even
domestic helpers’ salaries in the area, especially those working for expatriates, are higher than in many other
parts of the city. Vegetable vendors might also ask for higher prices for their merchandise and at the
supermarkets many products are quite expensive as they are imported. But Kemang has its own trademark
and business is thriving; new cafes and restaurants as well as shops and boutiques keep on opening in Kemang.
PONDOK INDAH
Pondok Indah is an extreme-upscale residential area in South Jakarta, Indonesia. Dubbed as the
'Beverly Hills' of Indonesia, this is a much sought-after suburb by expatriates due to the proximity to the
Jakarta International School, the beautiful planning, safe surrounding, and the clean air. Ciputra, one of
Indonesia's pioneer real estate developer and the Metropolitan Kentjana Group built Pondok Indah in the 70s
into the most prestigious and complete residential complex and commercial area in Indonesia.
Many mansions in the area comprise one to three floors, with designated quarters for household
staffs. The 'Jakarta Post' , in 2007, estimates that 74.5% of residents in Pondok Indah are expatriates,
following their annual survey of Indonesia. Most expatriate children in the suburb attend the Jakarta
International School. A large shopping complex, Pondok Indah Mall, caters to the residents of Pondok Indah.
The Pondok Indah Golf and Country Club was also the venue of the 1983 Golf World Cup.
MENTENG
Menteng , also another “ Beverly Hills ” of Indonesia , is known as a neighbourhood for bureaucrats, diplomats
and crème de la crème of Jakarta . Supported by easy access to service centres and nearby to the central
business district, Menteng is one of the most exclusive areas for residential real estate in Jakarta. Most of
the boulevards are lined with shadowy old trees that earn the label for Menteng as the first park town in
Indonesia. Designed by the Dutch Colonial Government in 1920s, Menteng still retains its graceful existence
with its beautiful parks, cozy street cafés and luxurious housing complexes.
KUNINGAN
Kuningan, the fastest growing district of Jakarta’s Golden Triangle, is an elite commercial area arrayed with
embassies, exclusive office buildings, luxury residential towers and shopping malls. One of the favorites is
the Plaza Setiabudi complex. Consisting of Setiabudi Atrium, Setiabudi One and Setiabudi Two buildings, the
office complex mixes business and pleasure. Located next to Wisma Bakrie, these buildings contain major oil
and gas companies, reputable banks, tours and travel agents, law agencies, and many others, along with a
stretch of cozy cafés, Italian restaurants and pizzerias, Japanese sushi bars, beauty parlors, a fitness center and
a cinema.

Web: http://www.ais-indonesia.com
Founded in 1996, AIS has been dedicated to the vision of providing world-class education in
Indonesia based on the Australian education system.
The school strives for the development of the whole person. Academic success is balanced by the
school’s emphasis on personal growth and development. Our students are challenged and
encouraged to discover their individual interests and abilities. AIS teachers are committed to
developing well-rounded individuals who are confident and creative problem solvers.
The AIS community is based on an extended family of teachers, students, parents and alumni
students. With over 700 students on four campuses, AIS offers a world of learning opportunities
and exciting experiences for toddlers in Preschool right through to young adults laying the
foundations for future careers.
AIS has now been operating in Indonesia for more than ten years. The first campus, established in
July 1996 in Pejaten, was set up by a group of parents who were educators. AIS has grown from an
initial enrolment of eleven students to four successful campuses – Kemang, Pejaten, Bali and
Balikpapan– offering world-class Australian education to local and expatriate students.
In Jakarta the school has a Primary campus in Kemang (Preschool 3 to Year 6) and a Secondary
campus in nearby Pejaten (Year 7 to Year 12). The school also have a campus in Bali (Preschool 2
to year 12) and another in Balikpapan (Preschool 2 to Year 10).
CALENDAR YEAR
The calendar year at AIS is following the Australian Academic Year (late-January to mid-December) ,
however, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
ACADEMICS
AIS use the new Australian Curriculum (AC) framework to guide our delivery of English,
Mathematics and Science. All other subjects, currently based on the Victorian Essential Learning
Standards (VELS) will gradually be converted to the AC in the next few years. All students in Years 3,
5, 7 and 9 take part in the annual Australia-wide NAPLAN tests. The results usually equal or exceed
the expected standards.
Senior students (Years 11 & 12) undertake a course of studies specified by the ACT Board of Senior
Secondary Studies in Canberra, Australia. Students who successfully complete the Senior
Certificate then have access to universities around the world.
15
FACULTY
The teachers are well trained and qualified. Most are from Australian and must have registration
with a State or Territory teacher registration authority. The school has a smaller number of talented
and enthusiastic local teachers and expatriate teachers from other nations who have developed a
real affinity for the Australian curriculum and style of teaching. They are supported by a wonderful
team of local Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants.
SECONDARY CURRICULUM
Years 7 to 10
In Years 7 to 10, from the beginning of 2012 the new Australian Curriculum will be gradually
introduced commencing with English, Mathematics and Science.
The curriculum guidelines define what is essential and developmentally appropriate for students to
know and be able to do at each level of schooling and sets expected standards. The standards are
central to the teaching and learning process. Assessment against these standards enables teachers,
schools and parents to form a clear picture of individual student progress.
With the exception of Advanced Indonesian the language of instruction is English. A strong English as
a Second Language (ESL) program (with in-class support) allows students from other language
backgrounds to improve their proficiency in English.
Years 11 & 12
AIS is affiliated with Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Department of Education and Training. The
senior students study courses accredited by the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (BSSS) and
the resulting certification is widely recognised.
The students can access universities in Australia by either sitting the Australian Scaling Test (AST) in
September, which contributes to a University Admissions Index (UAI) or by direct application relying
on individual merit.
ECAs
Students from Years 1-12 can join a wide range of ECA’s including sport activities such as Badminton,
Taekwondo, Tennis and Soccer. Creative and problem solving activities such as Chess, Origami,
Choir, IT Robotics and Dance are further examples of the diverse range available.
16
SUPPORT SERVICES @AIS
AIS provide specialist support to meet the individual needs of the students. The school recognises
that every student learns differently and learning programs should be flexible and tailored to
individual needs.
The trained staff in Support Services provides specialist assistance to students requiring support in
the following areas:
• Learning Difficulties
• Physical Disabilities
• Counselling
Prior to enrolment, some students are assessed to determine their need for specialised support
and the extent of that support.
The Support Services team works collaboratively with teachers and parents to provide an inclusive
support network that allows students to learn within the mainstream when appropriate, with
special arrangements that focus on the growth of the individual and promote attitudes of self
worth and achievement.
Inclusion is the key to the special needs program at AIS, where students can access mainstream
classes and participate in the wide range of curriculum options where appropriate. Each student’s
needs are assessed and Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) are implemented.
For students requiring teaching and support in smaller class environments, the Learning Support
Centre is offered.
The Support Services staff work at all year levels throughout the school to help cater for students’
individual needs. Students needing extra help can be identified by self referral, parent referral,
teacher referral, testing or academic performance.
To ensure students receive the support they need, we monitor each student’s progress regularly, in
consultation with classroom teachers and coordinators.
ASSESMENTS
At AIS, two forms of assessment are used to track the students’ progress:
•Summative assessments are tasks given to students at the end of a unit of work to test their
understanding of the work covered and how well they have learned the planned outcomes.
17
•Formative assessments are tasks given to students throughout a unit of work to check progress and
to help fine-tune the teaching approaches and learning arrangements for the students so that they
remain on target.
These not only inform the teacher of a student’s progress but also of the effectiveness of the
teaching approach and curriculum design.
Assessment at all year levels is internal. Teachers set a range of assessment tasks for students at
all year levels. Students are advised of the nature of the task and its relevance to their overall
results in advance. Consideration is given, when setting assignments, to students with learning
difficulties.
Individual student assessment files are maintained from year to year. These enable teachers to plan
their teaching around the needs of the class and each student.
At primary level, student progress is measured against agreed benchmarks in line with the learning
outcomes in the VELS curriculum. At secondary level, assessment reviews between the secondary
school campuses ensures a consistency in standards within the AIS.
External moderation by teachers in the ACT system ensures that the standards of assessment set
by AIS teachers correspond to those of the Australian education system. The learning program at
AIS celebrates every student’s achievements. The School believes that feedback is fundamental to
effective learning, and to this end, the formal reporting process includes the following:
•Written Half-Yearly and Yearly Reports in Terms 2 & 4 identify whether a student is working below, at or
above grade expectation.
•The teachers also meet with parents regularly, both formally and informally, to share information about the
education of each student
18

are submitted to the Admissions Office. The following documents will need to be submitted:
