I, the undersigned, hereby declare that I have known Mr. Jaka Kelana for about nine years. He
was my student at English Department, Faculty of Education, Lingua University of Malang,
Indonesia. He performed very well not only in his academic achievements but also in his
organizational activities. He completed his undergraduate study in 2004 with GPA 3,59 (cum
laude in scale 1-4) and IELTS Band 7.
Mr. Jaka has been working as an English teacher at the local government of East Java Province
for three years. With his relatively low income as a civil servant, I believe funding his own
postgraduate degree is not a feasible option. Tuition fees and living cost in Australia are too high
and unaffordable for an Indonesian civil servant like him. Therefore, he really needs a full-
scholarship to pursue M.A in Linguistics at Monash University. Currently, he has obtained an
Unconditional Letter of Offer from the Department of Linguistics, Monash University of
Melbourne.
In relation to his research competence, he has taken courses in research methodology with
excellent results. He has also shown his high level of academic and research competences when
doing a research on discourse analysis analysing speeches of Australian prime minister
candidates and eventually, obtained a maximal score A in the thesis examination. As his research
supervisor, I know that he is smart, hard-working, cooperative, and can easily adjust himself to a
new academic environment. Therefore, I am sure that he will be capable to continue his study
and conduct a research at a master degree program in an Australian university.
I believe that after getting master degree from Australia, he will be more competent to develop
human resources in Indonesia, especially in the field of English education and linguistics. He
will potentially disseminate his new educational experiences and cross-cultural understanding to
improve professional and academic atmospheres in his institutions and surrounding societies. I,
therefore, do not hesitate to recommend him as a prospective candidate for pursuing a master
degree program in Australia.
The Referee,
Professor in TESOL
Ammar Kodi used to be my student in the program of Engineering. I supervised him during
his thesis.
I saw him as a highly motivated student. He showed some good capabilities in dconducting
research. He understood some research methods and could choose the appropriate
research method for his thesis. Besides, he was an active student. He joined some
organization in campus and played significant roles in there. He was one of the best
students in my class showing some great achievements in every course I taught.
Heriyanto really wants to continue his study to Master’s degree. Considering all his good
achievements in academics during his bachelor dengere, I would highly encourage him to
do so
I believe that if he is awarded the scholarship, he will be able to give the most use of it.
Yours faithfully,
LETTER OF REFERENCE
To whom it may concern,
I, as the director of the Research Center for Deep Sea, Indonesian Institute of
Sciences (LIPI), fully support Mr. Joko Pamungkas’ application for a doctoral study
at the University of Auckland (Faculty of Science, Institute of Marine Science), as the
degree (Ph.D) is most important for his further career as an Indonesian scientist.
I have personally known Mr. Pamungkas since 2008, and in the last five years he has
demostrated his great capabilities as a young researcher. Through the DAAD
scholarship, he in 2013 completed a Master of Science (M. Sc.) degree in the
International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (ISATEC) program at the
University of Bremen, Germany, with good academic results.
During his master study in Germany, Mr. Pamungkas also won a CSIRO fellowship to
attend the 11th International Polychaete Conference in Sydney. His poster entitled
‘Utilization of Wawo Worms (Annelida, Polychaeta) in Ambon Island, Indonesia’ was
awarded as ‘The Best Student Poster with Special Commendation’ at the conference.
In the same month and place, he also participated in two international workshops, i.e.
‘Special Workshop on Microscope Photography & Preparation of Material for SEM’
and ‘Invasive Polychaete Workshop’, funded by Science for the Protection of
Indonesian Coastal Marine Ecosystems (SPICE), i.e. a bilateral marine research
project between Indonesia and Germany.
Since 2009, Mr. Pamungkas is used to collaborating with international research
institutions such as the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT),
Australia, and the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), Germany. Through
these collaborations, he has been producing several international publications (please
see his CV for more detailed information), and successfully organized an
international workshop on ‘Marine Taxonomic Study and Reference Collection
Management’ in Ambon, June 12th, 2014, with Dr. Christopher J. Glasby (MAGNT)
as the keynote speaker.
Mr. Pamungkas is, moreover, active in writing his opinions in local newspapers, and
published several attractive videos on YouTube in order to disseminate his work
(please visithttp://www.youtube.com/user/ppld2014). His original video on ‘Laor –
Delicious Marine Worms from Ambon Island, Indonesia’ reflects his interest, and
has been used as a source of teaching material at some universities in the world.
Mr. Pamungkas is the only polychaete researcher in our institution, and is among a
very few scientists in our country who dedicate themselves to study Indonesian marine
worms. Therefore, once he is trained, he could be a role model in this field of
research.
Considering his previous scholastic achievements (please see his CV for more
detailed information), hard-working attitude and persistence, I do believe that Mr.
Pamungkas will succeed in doing his doctoral study at the University of Auckland,
and become a great asset to our marine research institute. Herewith, I also guarantee
that Mr. Joko Pamungkas will return to his home country and be re-employed by
our institution as soon as he completes his postgraduate study in New Zealand.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Augy Syahailatua
