Remove/lnstall Power Steering Components

REMOVE STEERING COLUMN

IMPOBTANT: Pertorm all service repairs on the meter-


ing pump and steering valve in a clean,
isolated work area, prelerable a separate,
well-lighted room. Use extreme care to
keep work benches, tools, and test equip-
ment clean. Use the proPer tools, clean-
ing materials, and lubricants.

1. Relieve hydraulic pressure by turning steering wheel


several turns.

CAUTION: High pressure can exist at any hy-


draulic connection. Avoid injury lrom high pres-
sure leaks by relieving syslem pressure betore
disconnecting any hydraulic lines, fittings or
connections.

4. Femove steering wheel emblem, release knob (A), iam


nut (B), and washer (C).

5. Remove steering wheel using JDG-17 puller (A).

6. Remove cowl (A), tour cap screws (B) and dash cover.

8. Disconnect hydraulic lines (A) from metering pump cover.


Use clean container to catch leaking oil. Cap and plug lines
and fittings.

9. Disconnect spring (B) and remove adjusting lever (C).

10. While bracing metering pump (A), remove lwo cap
screws (B) holding tube assembly.

11. Tilt steering column into dash slot and remove steering
column with metering pump out bottom of control support.

INSTALL STEERING COLUMN


1. Reverse removal procedures.
CAUTION: Be sure everyone is clear of tractor
and implements. Slight steering movement
could suddenly occur when engine is started.
Have a secure hand hold.

2. Start engine and cycle steering lock{o-lock a miminum


of six times to bleed air lrom system. Continue locklo-lock
until ooeration is smooth.

REMOVE AND INSTALL METERING PUMP

Metering pump must be removed and installed as part
of power steering column. (See Remove or Install Steering
Column in this group.)

REMOVE STEERING VALVE

IMPORTANT: Perform all service repairs on the meter-


ing pump and steering valve in a clean, {A}

menl clean. Use the proper tools, clean-
ing materials, and lubricants.
'1. Relieve hydraulic pressure
by turning steering wheel in
both directions several turns.

CAUTION: High pressure can exist at any hy-


draulic conneclion. Avoid iniury from high pres-
sure leaks by relieving system pressure before
disconneciing any hydrautic lines, fittings or
connections.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable, side shields, grille


screens and hood.

3. Clean area around steering valve (A).

4. ldentify and remove hydraulic Iines. Cap or plug all lines


and fittings for reassembly.

5. Remove steering valve.

to proper fittings as identified in removal.

Remove/lnstall Power Steering Components

REMOVE STEERING MOTOR

NOTE: Steering motor repairs can be made without removal


on tractors without MFWD by removing front end
from side frames.

1 . Drain auxiliary oil reservoir and oil cooler by installing one

end of a hose in SCV and fasten other end securelv in {iller


tube.

2. Place SCV llow control lever at "Rabbit" position.

3. Run engine at 800 RPM and move SCV lever to flow oil
to sump.

4. When hose starts jumping (pump cavitaion) shut olf


engine and move SCV lever to neutral.

5. Relieve hydraulic pressure by working steering wheel


back and forth several turns.

6. Remove side screens, side shields, battery ground cable


and hood.

CAUTION: High pressure can exisl at any hy-


draulic connection. Avoid iniury trom high pres-
sure leaks by relieving system pressure before
disconnecting any hydraulic lines, fittings or
connection.

8. Disconnect hydraulic reservoir straps (A) trom fuel lank.

19. Support tractor at clutch housinq with JT277O6 Univer-


sal Suooort Stand.

NOTE: For repah without rcmoving steering motor on


tractors without MFWD, rcmove front weights and
weight support bracket. Mount D-0SO0ZST Sptitting
Stand with D-051495T Attachment to front suoDort
using the two lower mounting botts (A) hom the
weight bracket. Mount the rear attaching brucket to
the rear axle pivot using the rcar pivot bolt (B).
Remove eight (four each side) side frameto-steer-
'ing motor cap screws and carefully roll lront end fal
enough out to repair steering motor.

23. Attach a chain and hoist to steering motor and remove


eight (four each side) special side trame cap screws.

Remove/lnstall Power Steering Components

INSTALL STEERING MOTOR


1. Install steering motor in reverse order of removal noting
the following special instructions.

2. Torque side frame-to-steering motor special cap screws


to 578 N.m (426 lb-ft).

3. On tractors with no MFWD, lorque lower frame plale-to-


side frame special cap screws to 140 N.m (103 lb-ft).

4. On tractors with MFWD torque lower frame support-to-


side f rame cap screws to 15 N.m (1 1 lb-ft). Torque lower
lrame support-to-steering motor cap screws to 475 N.m (350
lbjt). Torque lower frame-to-side frame cap screws to 140
N m (103 lbjt).

5. Torque Jront weight support-to-tractor front support to


407 N m (300 lbjt).

6. Check all fluid levels.

CAUTION: Be sure everyone is clear ot tractor


and implements. Slight steering movement
could suddenly occur when engine is started.
Have a secure hand hold.

7. Start engine and cycle steering lock-to-lock a minimum


of six times to bleed air from system. Continue lock-to-lock
until operation is smooth.

REPLACE STEERING COLUMN BUSHING

1. Flemove steering column oil seal (A).

2. Remove steering column bushing wilh 27 49f (z/g in.) ptl61


Disk, 27499 (1 in.) Driver Disk and 27 487 Dtivet Handte.

3. Install new bushing (B) in steering column flush with top


of bore (A).

4. Place plate (B) and shims over lower shaft and


steering shaft assembly (C) in metering pump (A).

5. Install steering column as steering shaft assembly.


Flotate shaft to check for binding.

6. Torque four metering pump-to-steering column bolts (A)


to 47 N m (35 lb-ft).

7. Install retaining ring on upper shaft.

IMPOBTANT: Botate steering shaft to assure shaft and


pump turn freely.

TEST METERING PUMP FOR LEAKAGE
1. Remove metering pump . See Section 60, Group 05.

2. Remove plate (A) and reinstall cap screws. Torque to 47


N.m (35 lbjt).

3. Remove bushing (D) retaining ring and washer (E) from


lower steering shaft.

4. Use washer (E) to hold lower washer and oil seal (B) in
place. Install lower steering shaft (C).

7. Attach an R-12 pressure hose to air nozzle and steering


pump connection.

CAUTION: Do not exceed 1380 kPa (200 psi) air


pressure.

8. Apply air pressure to pump and submerge in solvent for


five minutes or until air bubbles appear.

9. lf bubbles are detected but source cannot be localed,
cover pump with liquid soap and apply air pressure.

DISASSEMBLE METERING PUMP
'1. Gradually remove two remaining
cap screws to separate
pump assembly. Friction spring (B) is compressed in
assemory.

2. Examine pump body with gears (A) and base (C) for wear
and scoring. Mallunctions could be caused by improperly
installed shim (D), contaminated oil or excessive leakage. a
IMPORTANT: Pump body and gears are matched and
must be replaced as a unit.

4. lnspect lriction spring (B) using D-0116844 Spring


Compression Tester.

ASSEMBLE METERING PUMP


1. Clean and dry with compressed air. Use new shims, seals
and O-rings.

2.Dip all parts (except shims and pump body) inJohnDeere


HY-GARDTM Transmission and Hydraulic Oil. Use care to
keep all parts clean.

3. Insiall special fittings (A) with O-rings. Install fitting with


check valve (B) in bore with circular recess. Tighten all lam
nuts to 47 N.m (35 lbjt).

4. Put cover in a vise with fittings downward and circular


recess (A) toward you.

5. Install shim (B). A thin oil


cover may aid in installation.

6. Install pump body with mark (A) facing up and away from
you.

7. Install gears. Gear with smooth bore and 4 internal


notches should be toward you. lnsure that mark (B) on face
of gears is up.
NOTE: These marks are not for gear timing. Position of gear
teeth relative to each other is not critical.

8. Installfriction spring (C)with plates on each end. Top and

10. Install pump base with steering shaft hole away from you ;?3
and seal bore up.

11. Install four cap screws with nuts as shown. Tighten nuts
only enough to compress friction spring and so base just
contacts body.

12. Install pump shaft so splines just enter gear, but are still
in pump cover. This is to align gear, hole in cover, and shaft.
Turn shaft lo make sure gears turn freely, When they do,
snug down nuts (B) so pump sections cannot move.

'13. Flemove the two loose cap screws as shown (A),


install oil seal (B).

14. Install seal backup washers, spacer plate (A), steering
column assembly, and remaining cap screws. Tighten to 47
N m (35 lbjt).

NOTE: To ease installation, assemble internal column parts


on top of metering pump and slide column tube on
last.

1 5. Test metering pump lor leakage as instructed in Section

260, Steering System Tests and Diagnosis.

TEST METERING PUMP FOR LEAKAGE

1. Remove metering pump . See Section 60, Group 05.

2. Remove plate (A) and reinstall cap screws. Torque to 47


N m (35 lbjt).

3. Remove bushing (D) retaining ring and washer (E) from


lower steering shaft.

4. Use washer (E) to hold lower washer and oil seal (B) in

5. Install special pipe (F) over lower steering shaft. Use
D-01205AA Gear Puller (G) to hold pipe in place.

6. Install a connector trom D-05361ST air pressure kit. €,


7. Attach an R-12 pressure hose to air nozzle and steering
pump connectron.

CAUTION: Do not exceed 1380 kPa (200 psi) air


oressure.

DISASSEMBLE AND INSPECT STEERING


VALVE
IMPORTANT: Steering valve repair requires a clean
environment, ll removed be sure to keep
all components ot the relief valves to-
gether and install valves in same part they
were removed from.

NOTE; MFWD steering valve is illustrated. lf tractor is not


equipped with MFWD, ignore reterences made to
MFWD comDonents.

'1. Inspect the steering valve housing and fittings tor any
obvious failures such as leaks or cracks.

2. Replace O-rings on any fittings that are removed.

3. Remove inlet f itting (F) and control circuil inlet litting (G).

4. Inspect inlet filter (E) and control circuit lilters


(H). Clean \.
or replace as necessary. Orifice on lilters (H) must be open.

5. Beplace O-rings on plug (D) and fittings (F and c).


Replace steel ball (C) if worn or damaged.

6. Inspect inlet check valve spring (B).

1. Flatten lock plate corner and loosen cap screw (A).

2. Flemove cap screws to remove spindle quill, and spindle


with arm assembly (A).

3. Remove cap screw lo remove washer (A).

4. Use a bridge (B) and spacer (A) to force the piston plug
in against its spring washer. Remove the piston plug snap
ring.

ASSEMBLE STEERING MOTOR

NOTE. Coat parts with clean John Deere HY-GAHD Trans-


mission and Hydraulic Oil prior to assembly.

1. Coat new o-rings with clean hydraulic oil and install them
in feedback piston bushing O-ring grooves.

2. Use 27505 and 27511 disks from D-01045AA Bushing,


Bearing, and Seal Driver Set to push teedback piston
bushing into its bore until it bottoms. Coat feedback pislon
with clean hydraulic oil and install it.

IMPORTANT: Align piston plug snap rings of forward


working piston so that snap ring gap
points toward center ot feedback piston
bore.

3. Coat new o-rings and back-up rings wilh clean hydraulic


oil and install them in the housing o-ring grooves. Install the
o-ring to the outside.

4. Use 27525 and 27 535 disks from D-01045AA Bushing,


Bearing, and Seal Driver Set to push piston sleeve into ats
bore until it bottoms.

5. Coat packing (A) and slipper seal (B) with clean hydrautic
oil and install on piston. Coat entire piston and seals wilh
clean hydraulic oil.
6. Use JDH-52 Piston Installation Tool (C) to install pislons.
Push the piston through the first sleeve, into the second, with
one swilt continuous motion.
IMPORTANT: Do not stop wilh the piston end between
the sleeves. The seal will expand and be
damaged when started into the second
sleeve.

7. Center the feedback piston slot and steering motor piston
pin bore with channel (C) so feedback piston pin can be
installed.

8. Use JDH-42-1 Piston Turning Tool to.turn piston to inslall


feedback pislon pin and spring in piston.

9. Turn steering piston so leedback piston pin engages the


groove in the feedback pislon.

10. Coat new o-ring with clean hydraulic oil and install on
feedback piston plug (A).

11. Dip plug in clean hydraulic oil and install plug. Secure
with snap ring.

12. Soak fiber back-up ring (D) in clean hydrautic oil. Coat
o-ring (C) with clean hydrautic oil.

13. lnstall back-up ring and o-ring on piston plug (B) with
the o-ring to the inside.

23. Carefuly slide the quill (E) over the spindle with its dash
mark (B) in line with the two other timing marks. Tighten
spindle quill cap screw to standard torque.

packrng (C) in cytinder end using JDH-6 O_ring and packing
tool.

2. Install rnner and ourer bushings (B) using disk 27512 from
D-01045AA Disk and Driver Set.

3. Install seal (A) using a No. 27512 1-13l16 in. driver disk
from D-01045AA Disk and Driver Set.

4. Installnew bushing and ball assembly (A) by lining up hole

REMOVE BRAKE VALVE
1. Relieve oil pressure by opening both bleed screws (A)
and depressing brake pedals.

CAUTION: Escaping tluid under pressure can


penetrate the skin causing serious injury. Re-
lieve pressure before disconnecting hydraulic
or olher lines. Tighten all connections betore
applying pressure. Keep hands and body away
trom pin holes and nozzles which eiect tluids
under high pressure. Use a piece ot cardboard
or paper to search tor leaks. Do not use your
hand.

lf any lluid is iniected into the skin, it must be


surgically removed within a tew hours by a
doctor tamiliar with this type iniury or gangrene
may result.

2. Remove right side shield, disconnecl two hydraulic lines


(A) and remove elbows (B).

8. Remove right brake pedal.

hydraulic lines (A).

2. Install mounting cap screw (D).

3. Install left brake extension (C), special pin (B), with E-ring
(A). Install inboard E-ring.

4. Install right brake pedal.

REMOVE/INSTALL BRAKE ACCUMULATOR

1. Flelieve oil pressure by opening both bleed screws (A)


and pumping brake pedals.

2. Remove dash cover and cowl cover (A).

3. Remove brake pressure line (B), accumulator pressure


line (C), and retaining clip (D).

4. Remove circuit relay mounting bracket with relays


attached.

5. Remove accumulator through cowl opening.

6. Install accumulator by reversing removal procedures.

DISASSEMBLE BRAKE VALVE
1. Flemove cap screws (A), retainer (B), and valve cover with
operating rods (C).

2. Remove manual brake piston (D) with plunger (F).


Remove plunger to remove O-ring and paper washer from
inside manual brake piston.

3. Remove spring (C).

4. Use a deep well socket to remove inlet valve nipple


with valve assembly (B). Remove O-ring (A).

5. Bemove back-up ring and O-ring from brake valve


housrng.

1 . Dio all Darts in clean John Deere HY-GARD Transmission
and Hydraulic Oil.
2. Install new O-rings (D) and backuprings (C) on piston (B).

3. Push piston into cylinder with oil side (A) loward oil inlet
cap.

Install oil inlet fitting (A) and ouflet titting (B).

PRE-CHARGE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR


IMPORTANT: Use dry nitrogen only to pre-charge accu-
mulator. Dry nitrogen does not mix with
oil. lt is non-combustible, will not cause
oxidation or condensation within accu-
mulator, and is not harmtul to piston seal.
Do not use air or any combustible gas as
they may cause oxidation or condensa_
tion harmful to oil, piston, seal or
accumulator.

CAUTION: Do not stand in line with accumulator


ends. Slowly open cylinder and regulator valves,
wear protective eye goggles.

1. Open nitrogen cylinder valve for an instant to purge

2. Remove Tru-Seat nut (D) and O-ring washers (C) trom


adapter assembiy (B).

3. Install one O-ring washer (C) on adapter assembly.

4. Install adapter assembly in gas check valve part of


accumutator.

5. Attach regulator (C) to cylinder valve and tighten


securely.

6. Attach high pressure hose (B) to regulator outlet and turn


pressure regulator screw (D) counlerclockwise until it turns
f reely.

7. Turn depressing screw (A) of gas cock counterclockwise.


Install gas cock on adapler assembly and secure hose to
nitrogen regulator.

8. Check all connections.

9. Fotate gas cock screw (A) clockwise to open accumula-


tor gas check valve.

10. Slowly open cylinder shut of{ valve until gauge needle
stops moving then fully open valve.

'11. Turn pressure regulator screw clockwise to get 3280 to


3620 kPa (475 to 525 psi).

12. Close cylinder valve and turn regulator valve


counterclockwise.

13. Close gas cock (rotate counterclockwise).

14. Flemove high pressure hose and tee from accumulator.

NOTE. lf accumulator is over-charged, remove the hose


ftom the gas cock and fitting Using the gas cock,
depress the charging valve in the accumulator
allowing excess gas to escape. Reinstall gauge and
cnecK pressure.

15. Install charging valve plug.

BLEED BRAKES
1. Loosen righfhand bleed screw lock nut (A) and open
bleed screw (B) two turns. Tighten lock nut to prevent oil
leakage.
2. Sla.t eng're and p.ess 'rgl.t brahe pedal. Hold for two
minutes and before releasing, loosen bleed screw lock nut.
Tighten bleed screw and lock nut.
3. Flepeat procedure for left-hand brake.
4. Pedal should feel solid and travel should not exceed 76
mm (3 ln. ).

ADJUST BRAKE VALVE
1. Felieve hydrau ic pressure by opening both bleed screws
(A) and deoressrng b'a\e pedals.

NOTE; Two people are needed for adjusting brakes.

CAUTION: Escaping fluid under pressure can
penetrate the skin causing serious iniury. Re-
lieve pressure before disconnecting hydraulic
or other lines. Tighten all connections before
applying pressure. Keep hands and body away
trom pin holes and nozzles which eiect fluids
under high pressure. Use a piece of cardboard
or paper to search for leaks, Do not use your
hand.

It any lluid is injected into the skin, it must be


surgically removed within a few hours by a
doctor familiar with this type injury or gangrene

2. Connect a 0-34500 kPa (0-345 bar) (0-5OOO psi) pressure


gauge In brake pressure line (A) using fittings and hose from
JD05470 Hydraulic Pressure Test Kit.

3. Raise cowl allowing access to brake valve.

4. Disconnect brake valve return (A) and connect a fitting


and hose from JD05470 Hydraulic Pressure Test Kit.

5. Remove right operating rod extension.


6. Adjust left operating rod extension to provide pedal height
of 146 to 149 mm (5.75 to 5.87 in.) from footrest to upper
curve surface of brake pedal.

7. Replace right operating rod extension leaving lock nut


loose, lock both pedals together and bleed brake system.
(See Bleed Brakes in this group). 146 i,
8. With tractor running, apply a steady force to brake pedals
obtalning minimum 7000 kPa (70 bar) (1000 psi) reading.

10. Adjust right'hand brake rod extension (A) by turning in

lf oil flow is not reduced. valve should be disassembled and
inspected. (See Brake Valve in ths section).

12. Remove qauge, reconnect return line and replace cowl.

13. Bleed brake system. (See Bleed Brakes in this group).

TEST BRAKE ACCUMULATOR


1. With engine stopped for no less than 15 minutes, apply
both brake pedals five t mes in 5 second intervals.

2. f brakes feel spongy, bleed brakes and retest


accumulator.

3. lf peda feels the same, there is a malfunction in the


accumulator or brake system.

DISASSEMBLE AND INSPECT BRAKE

1. Remove backing plate with facings (A).

2. Inspect backing plate for missing rivels, worn or loose


facings.

3. ll facings are being replaced, drill out each rivet head with
a drill slightly larger than the shaft of the rivet.

4. lnspect brake disk (A) .for excessive wear on sun pinion


(B)

5. Remove brake disk and sun pinaon.

9. Inspect piston bore and clean if necessary. Bore must not


be pitted or scored. Bore l.D. must be 57.23 to 57.30 mm
(2.253 to 2.256 ln.).

10. Inspect pressure plates for missing rivets (A), worn


loose facings (B).

11. To remove pressure plate facings, drill out each rivet


head with a drill slightly larger than the shaft of the rivet.

12. Inspect brake pistons for pitting or scoring. Piston O.D.


must be 57.14 to 57.16 mm (2.249 Io 2.250 in.).

13. lf pressure plate facing is being replaced, press piston


out of pressure plate so rivets can be removed.

NOTE: lf piston and not the pressure plate lacing is being


replaced. use a hnle edge putler to remove the
p6ton.

4. Press piston into pressure plate untill piston bottoms.
