Section 1:

Introduction
Hello! Welcome to my Classroom
Management Plan portfolio.

In my portfolio, you will see my philosophical

statement, my first day of school plans, classroom
environment, policies, how I plan to address
misbehavior, student motivation and finally class
engagement. I hope to implement this plan in a
fifth or sixth grade English language arts and social
studies class. I worked very hard on my classroom
management plan for my future classroom as a
guideline to how I would like to manage my class.
Through creating this plan, I had the opportunity
to develop how I wanted my classroom to look,
feel, and what kind of teacher I want to be. The
table of contents will guide you through this
portfolio as I divided each section to demonstrate
various components of classroom management and
the importance of those components.

Section 2:

Philosophical
Statement
Ms. Watson’s Philosophical
Statement:

I am aware that with time my philosophical

statement may grow and change as I grow and
change as a teacher. For now, I hope to take
William Glasser’s approach to classroom
management. I want all of my students to feel
freedom, fun, power, and more than anything
belonging. I believe that using William Glasser’s
Choice Theory, I will be able to create a kind
environment that promotes student learning. More
than anything I want my students to always feel
welcome and safe in my classroom. I want to be
sure that there are rules and regulations agreed
upon by myself and my students together. I want
my students to feel like they are citizens in my
classroom, instead of tourists.
Above all else, I value kindness and equity the
most in my classroom theory. I hope to respect and
learn from each and every student I encounter.

*This is just an hour and a half block schedule of the first part of the first day of school*
On the first day of school I will be sending my students home
with a take home folder containing this About The Teacher
Page. I will go through this in class and let students ask any
questions but I will also send it home for parents along with
classroom expectations and procedures.

Teacherspayteacgers.com
I would use this “All About Me” book templet
on the first day of school as a way to familiarize
myself with my students. I think this is a good way
to get to know each student without making them
nervous or shy by doing an ice breaker that involves
introducing themselves to the class. I would also
allow students to share voluntarily.

Classroom
Constitution Activity

Teacherspayteachers.com

This activity allows the students to be able to come

up with suggestions and ideas for rules that they think
are fair and just in the classroom. Using this activity, I
would get to know more about my students, and their
beliefs. I believe using this activity would give my students
a sense of belonging in the classroom.

Safety
Classroom Layout

I would lay my classroom out in a way

that all students can interact with their table
group. I also wanted my carpet area to be big
so that it can host my 5th graders. I believe I
will spend most of my time at the small
group table working with groups of either
below or above grade level students or at the
carpet modeling my lesson or doing guided
practices.
Flexible Seating
I hope to implement flexible seating in my classroom
while teaching. Flexible seating will have rules and
expectations. Most upper grade levels switch classrooms
throughout the day, because of that I know I can
implement flexible seating into my classroom. I would
allow certain times where students can participate in
flexible seating, or remain in their assigned seat if they
wish. I hope to be able to use the website Donors Choose
to supply most of these flexible seating options. I hope to
have the following in my classroom:
• Bean bags
• Stools
• Pillows
• Yoga balls
• Crate seats

classrooms-thatll-blow-your-teacher-mind
A teacher mail box will be placed in the classroom. I
will take time to explain that the mail box is for letters
to Ms. Watson that are private or just suggestions. I
will explain that this will be used as a tool and issues
brought forward by students will be addressed as whole
group so no one is singled out. I will also include that
“Shout Outs” for when someone does well, will be read
out from here once a week.

Section 5:

Classroom Policies/
Procedures
General Procedures to Introduce to My Class:

1. Entering the room: Enter quietly and politely; remove your

hat if you're wearing one; don't interrupt other students;
follow the appropriate procedures for each time of day (e.g.,
morning, after lunch, after a special class).
2. Lining up: Stand up quietly; push in your chair; take all
necessary items; line up without touching others or talking;
face the front of the line; watch where you are going.
3. Leaving the room: Tell me where you are going; take the
correct hall pass; do not run or play in the hallways or
restrooms.
4. Beginning the day: Enter the room politely; put away your
backpack, lunch, and coat; turn in your homework; sit at
your desk and read alone or do before-school work silently.
5. Ending the day: Clean off your desk; leave out your work
notebook; pick up any trash within three feet of your desk;
stack your chair; collect your mail; wait quietly to be
dismissed.
6. Turn-In Bin: Students will know when to turn in what and
to which color bin. (Red: texts Blue: homework Yellow: late
work
Continued…

7. When and how to use the pencil sharpener: At the

beginning of each assignment, the person I've chosen to
be the "Pencil Sharpener" will invite you to have him or
her sharpen your pencil; if your pencil breaks during an
assignment, use a community pencil; only the "Pencil
Sharpener" can run the sharpener and empty it.

8. Using the classroom library: When I am not teaching

the whole group, you may check out a book. To do so,
select a book (you only have three minutes at the class
library) and sign out the book on the sign-out sheet.
Take good care of the book; when you are finished,
return the book to the basket and check it off the list.

9. Absence Policy: students will be allowed to make up

missed work. The student will have five days to make up
missed work, if it is excused absence; exceptions Will be
made for students who are out for extended periods of
time.

10. Newsletters: a newsletter will be issued every

Monday. This newsletter will contain the latest
information on curriculum, happenings in the classroom
as well as field trips, as well as the week spelling words.
Major assessments for the week will be listed here.
Classroom Constitution

www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-post/zimmerman
In my class I hope to promote safety. With safety
comes some rules and guidelines. I hope to have a base for
my classroom rules and have my students build their own
classroom constitution. They need to feel that our rules
are their social contract, supporting their “inalienable
rights” as students in a caring community. I would start
out with the 5 general ideas listed in my discipline system
and have my students help me elaborate.
Other Classroom Procedures:

• Solo Cups for a table group. This

would mean less hands up and a
faster response time for students.
(Red: I need help now. Yellow: I
can wait until you have time.
Green: Our group doesn’t need
any help)
• Student “office” will be used
during tests/benchmarks/exams.
Students will be told when to
remove one from a storage closet
on tests days. These will lower
cheating and allow each student a
sense of privacy.
• Growth Mindset Warm Ups will be
implemented into our routine. I
will use these to start our day and
get the students thinking. This also
encourages positive thinking in the
classroom.

Section 6:

Steps to Address
Misbehavior/
Disciple System
These rules would be where I start my classroom
constitution. I would discuss why they are important
to me and allow my students to add to these.
I plan to use classroom jobs and salaries as my
behavior system. Each student is given their salary
and they will use it to either buy treats, go to
events for the class or it can be sued to pay fines
(behavior tickets/Think Sheets). Warning will be
given and after warning fines will be administered.
Prices of fines will be based on the offense. This will
hopefully encourage good behavior as losing
“money” will result in loss of privileges.
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Classroom-Management-Think-Sheet-Behavior-Form-321794
If a Think Sheet doesn’t correct bad behavior the
next course of action is contacting parents. I will
send this letter home with a child and require
parents sign and write a short response. This will be
explained to parent’s prior in the classroom
information book.

Teacherspayteachers.com
As part of my behavior system students will receive
rewards at the end of each month if they have not
had any tickets for misbehaving or being off task.
These would include additional recess time, lunch
with Ms. Watson and a friend or 5th grade kickball
game. As long as the students chart isn’t marked
with a ticket they will be able to participate in
monthly activities.

Section 7:

Student Motivation
A Homework Club will be used to motivate students to
get their weekly homework. (assigned Monday, giving
ample time to complete) A chart will be created and
students will start with their name on the chart. Each
week after homework is turned in names will be
removed if homework isn’t completed or turned in on
time. At the end of the month students with their
name still posted will receive a salary ‘bonus’. This will
begin again monthly giving all students time to
accomplish throughout the school year.

I want to write motivation quotes or messages each
Friday morning on my student’s desks using a paint
pen. This will encourage them more and more
importantly remind them that they are cared for and
important to my classroom. I will also write birthday
wishes on desks throughout the year.

Class Engagement

Brain Breaks!
I hope to implement the brain breaks into my
classroom. I would be sure to use them when my students
start to get antsy. Using these brain breaks would really help
to break up the day between activity and get blood flowing
to my student’s brain. I would use these as engagement in
my classroom.
Classroom Jobs
This is by far going to be one of my favorite things to
implement into my classroom! I saw this in observations. I like
how the children get the opportunity to have a ‘job’ and with
that job comes a salary and responsibilities. The students can be
completely engaged throughout the day while this behavior
system is in place. This also reinforces their involvement in
THEIR classroom not just Ms. Watson’s classroom. This is
completely inclusive and each child can choose their job. I would
be sure to rotate jobs after every grading period.
