Stages:
Activity 1: Warm-up – Tarsia game
Aim: to revise the Past Simple forms of “to be” and regular verbs
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, S-S
Timing: 10 minutes
Organization: group work
Materials: Tarsia Game Cards
Procedure:
- the T checks who is missing
- the Ss are already arranged in 4 groups of 5 or 6 for this activity
- the T gives each group a set of cards – a puzzle they must solve this way revising the Past Simple forms of “to
be” and regular verbs
- the T explains the game: Ss must match the cards so that each side of the card matches a side of another card. If
solved correctly the cards must form a hexagon of Past Simple forms of regular verbs

Activity 2: Teaching new vocabulary – Past Tense of irregular verbs

Aim: to introduce the new lesson – the Past Simple forms of irregular verbs
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Timing: 20 minutes
Organization: class work
Materials: flashcards, board, projector, notebooks
Procedure:
- the T explains to the Ss the objectives of today’s lesson
- the T starts the explanations by writing on the board: “Last week I…..” and asks the class “What did I do last
week?”
- the T starts putting flashcards on the board that show some activities she did a week before (the verbs used are in
the infinitive forms)
- the T reminds the Ss about the forms of regular verbs in the Past Simple and explains that there are verbs that
when used in the Past Simple they change their forms and the verbs on the board are just like that
- the T further explains that if we want to express that we did this activities sometime in the past we must change
their form
- the T takes another set of flashcards and sticks near the first verb on the board a flashcard with the past form of
the verb; she continues to do that with all the verbs
- the Ss must write down the both forms of the verbs in their notebooks
- after the Ss wrote all the verbs, the T will repeat both forms of the verbs
- to make sure that everyone understood why the verbs change their forms when used in the Past Simple, the T
projects on the board the verbs in the infinitive form and the Ss must say their past forms

Activity 3: Past Simple of irregular verbs worksheet

Aim: - to practice the Past Simple of irregular verbs
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, S-S
Timing: 10 minutes
Organization: groupwork
Materials: worksheets
Procedure:
- the T gives each Ss a worksheet and explains the tasks
- the T goes to each Ss to see if they understood what they have to do and to give feedback
- after the Ss finish the worksheets, the T checks the answers with the whole class
*if the Ss don’t finish the worksheet in the appointed time, the rest of the tasks will be given as homework

Activity 4: Game
Aim: - to further enhance the learning through games
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-Ss
Timing: 8 minutes
Materials: ball
Organisation: class work
Procedure:
- the T asks the Ss to form a circle in the middle of the class
- the T explains the rules of the game: the T is going to say a verb in the infinitive, and throw the ball to one of the
Ss. The S who catches it must say the Past Simple form of the verb. If the Ss says a wrong answer, he/she must
crouch down a round, in silence. The T takes the ball and says the same verb and throws it to another S. If the S
gives a correct answer, he/she says another infinitive form verb and throws the ball to another Ss. After all Ss
answer, the game is finished. It is alright if the verbs are repeated, as long as the Ss learn the forms.

Activity 5: Wrap-up and homework

Aim: - to remind Ss what they have learned and to explain the assignment for home
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Timing: 2 minutes
Materials: notebooks
Organisation: individual work
Procedure:
- the T asks the Ss if they understood the new lesson and if they think the lesson is hard
- the T gives feedback to the whole class
- the T gives the Ss the homework: to learn the Past Simple forms of the irregular verbs for the next class
