Title of Lesson: Teach About Odd and Even Numbers

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards: 2.7(A) Determine whether

a number up to 40 is even or odd using pairings of objects to represent the
number.

Objective/Purpose: Students will be able to articulate what even and odd

numbers are.

Introduce Lesson: If the objects in a group can all be put into pairs without
having one left over, then the group has an even number of objects.

If the objects in a group are put into pairs and one is left over, then the group has
an odd number of objects.

Example: Does the group have an even or odd number of pandas?

One way to find if the number of pandas is even or odd is to put the pandas into
pairs.

One of the pandas does not have a pair.

So, there is an odd number of pandas.
Another way to find if the number of pandas is even or odd is to count the
number of pandas by 2’s.

2 4 6 8 10

12 14 16 18 19

There is one panda left over when counting by 2’s.

So, there is an odd number of pandas.

Lesson:

• Write the number 7 on the board.

• Have students turn and talk to a partner to decide whether 7 is even or
odd.
• Ask students to share whether 7 is even or odd. Ask students to turn to
their partner to decide whether 27 is even or odd.
• Come back together to discuss whether 27 is even or odd. Explain that 27
is 20 + 7 and that 20 is an even number and 7 is an odd number so 27
must be odd. Demonstrate this by drawing pictures on the board.
• Tell students that even numbers end with 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. Odd numbers
end with 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.
• Pass out one of the “Even and Odd Bubbles” worksheets. Explain to the
students that they must color the circles with even numbers blue and the
circles with odd numbers green.
• Assess how students understand the concept of odd and even numbers
and review their answers.
• Pass out the second “Even and Odd Bubbles” worksheet and again,
explain to the students that they must color the circles with even numbers
blue and the circles with odd numbers green. Please repeat reviewing
process.
• If time allows, pass out the “Identifying Even and Odd Numbers”
worksheet and explain to students that they must identify whether each
number is even or odd. Ask students to share their answers.
Re-Teach: Use the following samples to re-teach the lesson if students do not
understand. Allow students to work in groups if needed.
