GUIDELINE FOR TRAINING CIVIL / STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

1. INTRODUCTION
The main aim of this training program is for the students to acquire technical knowledge in Structural
Engineering Design and personal experience of the work environment under the Professional Review
Rules and guidelines stipulated by Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL).

2. OBJECTIVES
This training programme was developed and organized in order to expand technical knowledge of the
trainee within the workplace context and ensure the trainee improve the following competence:

1. Understanding of engineering principles


2. Practical application of engineering knowledge
3. Managerial Involvement
4. Interpersonal skills
5. Professional conduct

3. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Required hours


The Trainee should complete 28 weeks of full-time training in following areas.

 Adapting to Work Environment - 2 weeks


 Familiarizing to design codes, practices and guidelines - 4 weeks
 Design and Analysis of Structural Elements - 12 weeks
 Familiarizing Computer Modeling & Software - 6 weeks
 Familiarizing of Preparation of Structural Layouts - 3 weeks
 Introducing preparing design reports - 1 week

3.2 Weekly reports


The trainee must file weekly reports detailing their internship assignments and the number of
completed hours in that week, in addition to the log book. These reports must be signed by the Training
Supervisor at the completion of the work week reviewing whether the training outcomes are achieved.

3.3 Performance Evaluation


Training Supervisor will evaluate the performance of each trainee at the completion of training period
based on the checklist below.

Remarks:

Evaluation is done primarily to provide trainee with feedback so that the he/she might improve their
performance.
