I Overview
SJ-22D series speed measurement and control device (herein after referred to as SJ-22D) is based on
ARM chip and equipped with advanced and reliable mechanical speed sensor and electrical speed
sensor. Besides, it can measure pulse signal of mechanical speed and voltage and frequency on
generator to realize control and measurement of rotating speed of generator unit. SJ-22D series include
the following types: SJ-22DF electrical speed measurement and control device (herein after referred to
as SJ-22DF), SJ-22DP mechanical speed measurement and control device (herein after refereed to as
SJ-22DP), SJ-22DC with both electrical and mechanical rotating speed and the upgraded SJ-22DD.
With the development of automatic control system of generator unit, there are more requirements on
reliability of measurement and protection of unit speed, and the original speed measurement device can
no longer satisfy the requirement any more. To solve the defects of former speed measurement devices
and meet the specific requirement of automatic monitoring and protection of power station, SJ-22D
adopts the breakthrough design as below:
Adopt mechanical and electrical speed measurements in one device, which can be combined or
singly used.
It possesses unique electrical speed sensor, which completely solve the difficult problem of
obtaining accurate and reliable measurement in case of low-frequency and low-amplitude of
residual voltage signal.
It adopts advanced mechanical speed sensor with easy installation, which overcomes the problem
of bad reliability due to traditional photoelectric sensor or encoder. In addition, it can correctly
distinguish the rotating direction and carry out speed measurement under different working
conditions of pumped storage power station unit. Besides, it can conduct creep testing.
Signal input of mechanical speed measurement supports positive and negative signal inputs to
meet various requirements of signal output from different user sensors.
SJ-22D can be widely applied in rotating speed measurement and protection of generator unit and also
used in other occasion where speed measurement is needed or used alone as frequency measurement
meter.
II Main Functions and Technical Features
2.1 Main functions
2.1.1 Settable input mode

5 Output signal:
Speed measurement output: 8-path, connect 2 normally-open contacts in each path; One is
independent normally-open contact and the other is public terminal as
shown in Figure 4.
Warning output: 1-path, normally-open contact
Reversal output: 1-path, normally-open contact
Power-losing alarm: 1-path, normally-closed contact

3.2 Wiring
Connection between SJ-22D and external equipment is realized by plug/socket on the back. For
definitions of plug or socket, please see Table1. For wiring principle, please see Figure 2~4.
External wiring cable shall be seen in Table 1. All cable shields shall be in earth connection reliably.

Distance between probe top and magnetic steel top shall be 16±1mm.
Mounting bracket and rotating elements shall be installed reliable and stably.

When adopting internal power supply, the wiring diagram is shown in Figure 5-1. AO power supply V+ is
24V, and the suggested external load Rxmax shall be 750Ω.

internal power supply external power supply
When adopting external power supply, the wiring diagram is shown in Figure 5-2. AO power supply
range V+= (9.0V~36V), external Rx will change as V+ voltage changes. As V+=24V, Rxmax=750Ω.
Notes: Both wiring ends of load Rx shall not be in ground connection, whether power supply is adopted.

SJ-22D communication interface is introduced by J5 plug/socket. The device is equipped with DB9 hole
socket. External wiring shall be equipped with DB9 pin plug for connection. J5 supports standard
RS485/RS232 interface, of which pin shall be seen in Figure 3. According to description of J5 terminal,
RS232 or RS485 shall be adopted for communication. For communication mode of automatic adaption
inside the device, there is no need of jumper and other additional settings.
IV Relevant Settings and Keys Description of SJ-22D
4.1. SJ-22D panel arrangement

PI: Normally on or flickers indicating there is pulse input of mechanical speed measurement signal; off
indicating there is no signal input.
SEC: operating indicator light. Off in half second and on in half second.
INV: reversal indicator light. On means unit is in reversal status (PI1 is defined as reversal before PI0).
N1~N8: represent 8 output statuses of speed scale, on means output relay operation.

Set value: check set value of eight rotating speed scales.
By pressing Set value, it is necessary to check all set values of output scales, as shown in the following
table.

Set scale will be displayed in 8 groups. No.1~8 represent output set values of eight scales, return
dead zone and output strategy. The first number of each group means the No. and the last three in
the first row of each group display output value of rotating speed. If there is “decimal point”, it means
“<”; if not, it means “>”. The last three in the second row display return dead zone and the last
three in the third row means output strategy.
If actual rotating speed increases to a value ≥ Ps (t1 time), “>” means output node is connected. If
actual rotating speed < (operating value-return dead zone) (t2 time), output node is disconnected. As
shown in Figure 7.1, if actual rotating speed decreases to a value ≤ Ps (t1 time), “<” means output node
is connected. If actual rotating speed > (operating value-return dead zone) (t2 time), output node is
disconnected. As shown in Figure 7.2, nodes in t1~t2 operate.

Debugging software can set the output scale (see appendix 2). Default value can be set by panel and the
setting method is shown as below:
4) Press Set value without releasing, and then press Reset until reset is completed and it display
location, then release Set value.
5) By Set value, it is necessary to check whether set value is correct. If not, repeat step 4. If
problems still exist, it may be hardware failure.
1) Parameter modification not allowed/allowed: if it is necessary to modify set value of SJ-22D, the
switch shall be set in parameter modification allowed. After modification, return to parameter
modification not allowed (original position).
2) Electric braking/non-electric braking: if there is electric braking, set switch in electric braking, or set it
in non-electric braking. Under circumstance of electric braking, it is necessary to install
measurement sensor. Besides, when electric measurement signal changes, do not give
alarms.
3) FI valid/invalid: if it is necessary to conduct electric measurement, set switch in FI valid, or set it in FI
invalid.
4) PI valid/invalid: if it is necessary to conduct mechanical measurement, set switch in PI valid, or set it
in PI invalid.

A. Abnormal change (constant 5 times, close to rated rotating speed), alarm (2s pulse), output
remains pre-alarm status, no change, alarm resets, output based on output strategy.
B. Disconnect, alarm (≥2s pulse), output remains pre-alarm status, disconnection recovers, alarm
resets, output based on output strategy. (Switch shall be in “non-electric braking” position.)
C. Exceed measurement range. If measured value > 100Hz, alarm (≥2s pulse), output remain
pre-alarm status. If measured value < 100Hz, alarm resets and output based on output strategy.
A. Abnormal signals, alarm (pulse time, the same as single signal), output remains pre-alarm
status. If alarm resets, output shall be based on output strategy.
B. Abnormal signal, alarm light will flicker and alarm output doesn't operate. Check whether signal
outputs by normal signal. If the signal is normal, alarm resets and output based on output strategy.
C. Measured values in F and P mode have large differences, alarm light flickers and alarm will not
output. According to output strategy, decide whether to output. If difference is small, alarm resets.
(Switch shall be in “non-electric braking” position.)
4.6. Setting
Special attention shall be paid to set parameters before new device is put into operation.
Otherwise, output may be wrong.
Output scale shall be set in accordance with practical need. Return dead zone shall be 95%, node shall
be 5% and the rest shall be 1%.
Unit of rated rotating speed shall be rpm, and the value shall be set in accordance with practical value.
Before leaving factory, analog quantity has been set without further adjustment.
Rated frequency shall be system frequency of the unit. There are 50Hz and 60 Hz for selection. In China,
50Hz shall be selected.

Mechanical measurement sensor can be installed on shaft end and at shaft side. The sensor shall be
installed on main shaft top of the generator, as shown in Appendix 1 Figure (a). It can also be installed at
main shaft side of the generator, as shown in Appendix 1 Figure (b).
Distance between probe top and magnetic steel top surface shall be about 16mm. Rotary disc (or rotor
plate) shall be installed between probe and magnetic steel and the distance from probe top shall be
smaller than 4mm. The depth shall be sufficient to cover the probe. There shall at least be 6 rotor plates.
10 or 12 rotor plates shall be installed for unit with low rotating speed (<100rpm).

Before installation, cut off steel strip in accordance with the diameter of main shaft at mounting site and
pass certain magnetic steel through steel strip (check whether magnetic steel is firmly connected on its
holder). Then attach rubber on magnetic steel near main shaft. Magnetic steel shall be in uniform
arrangement as much as possible.
Connector consisting of two fasteners is used to fasten steel strip. At first, put tail fastener on the right
fastener and insert both fasteners in square hole of steel strip at both ends, then insert based on fastener.
Fasten by tightening screw on right fastener until it is fastened firmly. At last, insert left fastener in tail
fastener and tighten screw on tail fastener.
Steel strip shall keep level during installation. Distance between probe top surface and magnetic steel
top surface shall be smaller than 10mm. Magnetic steel shall not be smaller than 6. 10~12 shall be
installed for units with low rotating speed (<100rpm).

Operate Setup.exe and installation program will be initiated. According to instruction, install debugging
software under assigned catalog (e.g. C:\Program\files\NARI-SJ22) or user-defined catalog. Desktop will
display shortcut of SJ22 debugging software.
When finishing installation, connect serial port on PC and serial port on SJ-22D. Double click shortcut,
the following Appendix 2 will display:

represent original status of parameter in Appendix 2 Figure 2.

By operation stated in Appendix 2 Figure 2, parameters can be written, read, stored and loaded. Besides,
communication can be set, status and measured value can be displayed and alarm can be confirmed.
Default parameter of SJ-22D is shown in Appendix Figure 3. Before modifying parameters, DIP switch
shall be in parameter modification allowed position.
Node No.: network node No. of SJ-22D. Default node No. 1 can be modified by the software and loaded
by Load node.
Load parameter: after modifying parameter as required, load the parameter in SJ-22D by Load
parameter. By “loading condition”, it is necessary to check whether parameter is loaded. By Call
parameter and Set value on SJ-22D panel, it is necessary to check whether all parameters are written
in the device. If it is correct, reset DIP switch in parameter modification not allowed.
Appendix 2.2.2 File loading and storage
Click File loading, it is possible to load parameter in files.
Click File storage, it is possible to store current parameters in the files.
Appendix 2.2.3 Communication setting
Click Communication setting, it is possible to set communication parameter of serial port.
Appendix 2.2.4 Call waveform
Select Call waveform, it is possible to call rotating speeds in the last 20min and display in waveform.
Recording density will be 2 point/s. Drag waveform display area by left button, the selected waveform
can be zoomed in. Click right button to return to original waveform.
Appendix 2.2.5 Alarm confirmation
If there is alarm in SJ-22D, click Alarm confirmation to delete alarm, as if pressing OK.

Both RS485 and RS232 can be selected. Baud rate: 9600bps, 1 start bit, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit, no
verification.

At first, adjust signal frequency and then modify B and K, and IOUT shall meet the following requirement:
If F=0Hz, change B to make sure that IOUT=4.00mA.
If F=100Hz, change K to make sure that IOUT=20.00 m.

When electrifying, default value is 0. As master station carries out one or several loading(s), “load result”

SJ-22D requires that PC shall start from address 100H when reading wave recording data. Otherwise,
real-time data cannot be ensured.
It is necessary to carry out modification in accordance with broadcast mode. It is suggested that the
network shall only be connected with one set of SJ-22D, or data security of other devices cannot be
maintained.

If mechanical measurement sensor cannot be installed in some certain areas, it is necessary to install
electrical signal (e.g. permanent magnetic machine signal) to replace the mechanical pulse signal.
MB2212 converter (as shown in Appendix 4 Figure 1) can convert AC voltage signal to pulse signal
consistent with AC signal frequency.

Input/output pin of MB2212 converter is shown in Appendix 4 Table 1. Electrical signal will be inputted
from Jin into MB2212 converter and pulse signal will be outputted from Jout. Such signal can directly
connected to input plug J3 of mechanical measurement pulse of SJ-22D. Shielded twisted pair cable
shall be used for wiring and the shielding layer shall be in ground connection reliably.
MB2212 converter can be installed easily and conveniently, which can be directly mounted on vertical
terminal at right and left sides of cabinet. Before installation, direction shall be confirmed at first, making
sure that “UP” will face upward and upper plug Jin will be connected with external PT signal and lower
plug Jout will be connected to J3 of SJ-22D. MB2212_L and MB2212_R with the same functions shall be

When using MB2212 converter instead of mechanical measurement sensor, debugging software for
SJ-22D shall be used to conduct proper setting ensuring correct functions.
Setting method: set PI enabled on the back of device to valid; based on the following formula, calculate
N; for permanent magnetic machine signal with rated speed of 50hz, the formula shall be N*RPM=3000;
for permanent magnetic machine signal with rated speed of 25hz, the formula shall be N*RPM=1500; N
refers to the number of pulses per revolution; as required by above formula, RPM is still rated
rotating speed.
Output strategy shall still be based on recommended method (> “or”, < “and”).
Input signal: voltage signal amplitude: 0.3V~180V; voltage signal frequency: 1.0~150Hz
Output pulse: pulse signal amplitude is the same as that of output signal power supply, and drive
capability shall not be smaller than 30mA.
