Projectile Motion
Learning Goals:
I will be able to explain what projectile motion is and I will be
able to solve projectile motion problems.

Key Terms

• Projectile – an object that moves along a two-dimensional curved

trajectory in response to gravity.
• Projectile motion – the motion of a projectile under gravity.
• Time of flight – the time taken for the projectile to complete its
motion.

Describing Projectile Motion

• Projectile motion problems are two-dimensional vector problems.

• We use the following conventions for directions:

Example 1 – Launching A Projectile Horizontally

A beanbag is thrown from a window 10.0 m above the ground with a horizontal
velocity of 3.0 m/s. How long will it take the beanbag to reach the ground?

Example 2 – Launching a Projectile at an Angle

to the Horizontal.
A soccer player running on a level field kicks a soccer ball with a velocity of 9.4
m/s at an angle 40° above the horizontal. Determine:
a) The time of flight
b) Range
c) Max. height

Example 3 – Adding Vectors by Components

when 1 is due E, W, N or S
Julie walks 30.0 m [W], she turns and walks 15.0 m [S 35° E]. What is her
displacement?

Example 3 – Adding Vectors by Components

when neither is due E, W, N or S
A hockey puck travels with a displacement of 4.2 m [S 38° W]. It is then struck
by a player’s stick and undergoes a displacement of 2.7 m [E 25° N]. What is
the puck’s total displacement?
