Achievement test 2 – Speaking

Units 5–9
TEACHER’S NOTES
Timing: 14 minutes per test
Marks: Award up to five marks for each of the five categories (Task achievement, Range, Organisation,
Pronunciation and Accuracy) according to the criteria set out in the Speaking assessment scales.
This Speaking test consists of three parts and is to be conducted with learners in pairs.

Part 1
TIME About 3 minutes
INTERACTION Teacher Learner A; Teacher Learner B
PROCEDURE
1 Say this to both learners: ‘First I want to ask you some general questions about yourselves.’
2 Ask questions 1–3 to Learner A.
1 What do you do? If you don’t work, what would you like to do?
2 What do you particularly enjoy about your job? Why?
3 Do you socialise with your colleagues? If so, what do you do? If not, why not?
3 Ask questions 4–6 to Learner B.
4 What kind of holidays do you enjoy most? Why?
5 Where did you spend your last holiday, and what did you do?
6 What will you be doing for your next holiday?

Part 2
TIME About 6 minutes
INTERACTION Learner A Learner B
PROCEDURE
1 Give learners their role cards. Tell them they will have a conversation about the topic on the card (planning
a new website for the college) and that they will talk together for about six minutes. Allow them time to read
through their role cards and to think of some ideas.
2 Invite Learner A to start the conversation.
3 End this part of the test after six minutes.

Part 3
TIME About 5 minutes
INTERACTION Teacher Learner A; Teacher Learner B
PROCEDURE
Explain that you will ask Learners A and B questions in turn based on the subject of the previous task.
1 How often do you go on the Internet? Why?
2 What kind of sites do you use? Why?
3 What makes a good website?
4 Do you belong to any social networking sites? Why? Why not?
5 Do you think the Internet should be censored? Why? Why not?
6 How do you see the future of the Internet?
