Institutions are made up of different people who work together to achieve

a common goal. Their work is very important for the life of the members of
a community.

These institutions carry out important functions in our lives. They educate us
and our family members, like schools and universities. Other institutions
provide spiritual and religious guidance, like churches and temples. Some
have an economic purpose, such as business and companies. Others, like
foundations, have a social function. Some have the responsibility to take
care of our health like hospitals.

Families and other institutions make up a network of protection around

you. This is what we know as society.

Why are there lines on a map?

Look at this map. Can you see the lines forming a grid on the map?

North Pole

South Pole

These are imaginary lines. The equator is the most important horizontal imaginary
line. It divides the earth into two equal parts the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

❖ Find the equator line, colour it red and label it.

Other important horizontal imaginary lines are the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of
Capricorn, the Arctic Circle, and the Antarctic Circle.

❖ Colour and label these imaginary lines on the map above.

The imaginary lines help us find an exact location anywhere on the map.

Climate zones on Earth

What does the climate of a zone depend on?

The climate of a region depends on the sunlight it receives and other factors, too.

This part of Earth receives

direct sunlight.

These parts of Earth

receive sunlight at a slant.
slant: inclined line or direction

These parts of Earth

Because different parts of Earth get different amounts of

sunlight.

Let’s read!

Tropical zone

The tropical zone is located on the equator between the

Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic

of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Sun’s rays strike directly at this area, the temperature is

high all year long and the seasons are all very similar. In some

2019 Version Page 65 of 80

3rdGrade SOCIAL STUDIES WORKBOOK

places, it rains a lot, it is very humid all the time and we find jungles. In other places,

there is no rain, and we find deserts.

People usually wear light clothes and sandals. Most activities take place outdoors.

People can enjoy a variety of water sports, because the ocean water is warm.

Temperate zone

The Northern Temperate zone is located

between the Tropic of Cancer and the

Arctic Circle and the Southern Temperate

zone is located between the Tropic of

Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle.

The Sun’s rays strike this area at a slight angle

so the temperature is moderate, higher in summer and lower in winter. In this zone

there are four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. There is a wide variety

of forests, bushes, and animals because of the abundant rainfall and mild

temperatures. In the summer, days are long and hot and in winter days are short,

cold, and rainy.

Cold zone

The Cold zones are located inside the polar

circles. The polar zones receive indirect

sunlight so temperatures are always very low,

usually below 0°, and the ground is covered

by ice. The polar zones have two seasons:

winter and summer. Vegetation is scarce and

living conditions are very difficult.
