These institutions carry out important functions in our lives. They educate us
and our family members, like schools and universities. Other institutions
provide spiritual and religious guidance, like churches and temples. Some
have an economic purpose, such as business and companies. Others, like
foundations, have a social function. Some have the responsibility to take
care of our health like hospitals.

UNIT 2
Getting to know our world
Learning goal:
➢ Locate people, places and elements on a grid
using points of reference and cardinal points.
(OA6)
Cardinal directions are points of reference that are the same for everyone.
One way to locate the cardinal directions is to use the sun as a point of reference.
Midday
West East
Sunrise
Sunset
The sun rises in the morning in the East and sets in the evening
in the West.
2. He is pointing West
with his left hand.
We are going to paste labels for North, South, East, and West in the correct places
in our classroom.
Draw in each rectangle the objects around you. Take cardinal directions into
consideration.
North
West East
South
3. Answer.
You are sitting at your desk now. Identify the cardinal directions where the
following objects are located.
4. Read the story, write the name of the place and describe it. Draw the place
according to the instructions.
“In a faraway place there is a beautiful forest where many animals live, they
work and live together. Ducks swim in a lake, butterflies fly over colourful flowers
every morning, two deer drink water from the lake and birds tweet all the time.
On the hill there is a big castle where a beautiful princess lives.”
1. Treasure hunt
• Label cardinal points on the compass rose.
• Colour the way to the treasure on the following grid. Start at X.
• 2 squares North
• 3 squares East
• 5 squares South
• 6 squares West
• 2 squares North
3. Look at this classroom. Fill in the table with the corresponding coordinates.
4. Using the picture before and the compass rose complete the following sentences.
7. Draw a plan of your classroom on the “My notes” pages of your workbook.
You can see only part of the Earth’s surface at one time. You
have to rotate the globe to see the continents, oceans, seas,
countries, cities, and many other places.
World map
World maps represent the Earth as a whole. They show the whole surface of
our planet at one time.
The shape of the continents and oceans becomes distorted mainly near the
poles.
World maps and globes give us a lot of information about our planet. For
example:
▪ We can learn the name, shape and location of continents, oceans,
countries, etc.
▪ We can also compare sizes of countries.
▪ We can calculate distances between places.
1. Look at the world map above. Using an atlas write the name of continents and
oceans.

A continent is one of the six large landmasses on Earth: Europe, Asia, Africa,
America, Australia and Antarctica.
Asia is the largest continent and Australia is the smallest. Australia is not only a
continent, but also a country! There are 55 countries in Europe.
What is an ocean?
An ocean is an enormous body of salt water. Oceans cover almost 70% of Earth's
surface. There are five oceans on Earth: The Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean,
the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
4. Label Continents and Oceans in the following jigsaw map. Cut the pieces and
paste them on a piece of drawing paper or cardboard.
4. Put the jigsaw puzzle together and answer True (T) or False (F).

These are imaginary lines. The equator is the most important horizontal imaginary
line. It divides the earth into two equal parts the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
Other important horizontal imaginary lines are the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of
Capricorn, the Arctic Circle, and the Antarctic Circle.
The imaginary lines help us find an exact location anywhere on the map.
2. Circle the pictures showing factors or elements of weather and label them.

What is weather?
Weather is the combination of sunlight and clouds, wind, precipitation (snow
or rain), and temperature in a specific place at a certain time.
Weather changes over a shorter period of time because of the changes in the
combination of factors. One day it can be sunny and the next day can be
rainy.
What is climate?
Climate is the weather found in a certain place over a long period of time.
It is the average temperature, wind, humidity, snow, and rain in a place over
many years.
Weather can change often while climate continues over a long period of time.
4. Its most important factors are sunlight, clouds, wind, precipitation and
temperature _________
6. It is the weather found in a certain place over a long period of time. ________
Let’s experiment!
Task: Show the relationship between the Sun and Earth by using a torch and a
ball. Your teacher will model.

2. In diagonally.
which case the ball will be cooler?
2. Observe what happens with the light on the ball.
_____________________________________________________________________________
3. Record your observations.
Do the experiment. Record your observations.
The climate of a region depends on the sunlight it receives and other factors, too.
On the entire planet there are mainly three different climate zones, depending on
the sunlight they receive: the tropical zone, the temperate zones, the cold zones.
The tropical zone red The temperate zones green The polar zones blue
