THE ORDINARY OF THE MASS

according to the English Missal (Knott Missal) and
the Missale Romanum (Latin Missal) of Pope St Pius V

ENGLISH LATIN
When the priest, having vested, approaches the Altar, he makes the due
reverence, and signs himself with the sign of the cross from forehead to
breast, and says in a clear voice:

IN the name of the Father, In nomine Patris, et Filii, et

and of the Son, and of the Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Holy Ghost. Amen.
Then with hands joined before his breast, he begins the Antiphon:

P: I will go unto the altar of God :

even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

The people respond, repeating the Antiphon:

R: Introibo ad altare Dei : ad Deum qui laetificat

juventutem meam.
Then, the priest says the following, Psalm 42/43, the people responding
alternatively with the Antiphon:

Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause : against the
deceitful and wicked man.

P. For thou art the God of my strength, why hast thou put me from thee:
and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me.

¶ In Masses of the Dead, and in Masses of the Season from Passion Sunday
to Holy Saturday exclusive, the Psalm Give sentence is omitted, with
Glory be to the Father, and the repetition of the Antiphon; but In the
name of the Father, I will go, and Our help having been said, the
Confession is made as follows:

¶ If the Mass is celebrated sine populo, the priest adds and before to all
the saints and all the Angels, while leaving and to you, brethren and and
you, brethren unsaid.

Then the Priest, with joined hands, makes the absolution saying:

Almighty God have mercy Misereatur vestri/tui [nostri]

upon you/thee [me], forgive omnipotens Deus, et dismissis
you/thee [me] your/thy [my] peccatis vestris/tuis [nostris],
sins, and bring you/thee [me] perducat vos/te [nos] ad

He signs himself with the sign of the cross, saying:

Kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us

them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But
deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Collect
LMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
¶ At solemn Mass the Celebrant, before he reads the Introit, blesses
incense saying: Be thou ble ssed by him in whose honour thou shalt be
burned. Amen. And receiving the thurible from the deacon, he censes the
Altar saying nothing. Then the deacon takes the thurible from the
Celebrant and censes him only. Then the Celebrant, signing himself with
the sign of the cross, begins the Introit:

¶ The proper melody for the Kyrie as well as the Gloria will be found in the
attached Kyriale.

Then in the midst of the Altar he extends and joins his hands, and bowing
his head a little, says, if it is to be said, Glory be to God on high, and
continues with joined hands. When he says We worship thee, We give
thanks unto thee, Jesu Christ, and Receive our prayer, he bows his head;
and at the end, saying, With the Holy Ghost, he signs himself from
forehead to breast.

Then he kisses the Altar in the midst, and turning to the people, says:

the Office demands.

Then follow the Epistle (the priest says at the end: The Word of the Lord,
to which the people respond, Thanks be to God), Gradual, and Tract, or
Alleluia, with the Verse, or Sequence as the Season or quality of the Mass
requires.

 THE GOSPEL READING
These being ended, if it be a solemn Mass, the deacon places the book of
the Gospels on the middle of the Altar, and the celebrant blesses incense as
above: then the Deacon, kneeling before the Altar, says with joined hands:

Cleanse my heart and my lips, Munda cor meum ac labia

almighty God, who didst mea, omnipotens Deus, qui
cleanse the lips of Isaiah the labia Isaiae Prophetae calculo
prophet with a live coal: so of mundasti ignito: ita me tua
thy gracious mercy vouchsafe grata miseratione dignare

asked, lights are not carried, and the celebrant does not kiss the book.

[THE HOMILY]
[The priest may preach his homily on the Gospel]

CREDO
Then at the midst of the Altar, extending, raising, and joining his hands,
he says, if it is to be said, I believe in one God, and proceeds with joined
hands. When he says God, he bows his head to the Cross, which he does
likewise when he says Jesus Christ, and together is worshipped. But at
the words And was incarnate he genuflects until And was made man is
said. At the end at the words And the life of the world to come he signs
himself with the sign of the cross from forehead to breast.

Then shall the Priest (or the Bishop, being present,) standing up, and
turning himself to the people, pronounce this Absolution.
LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great
mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with
hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy
upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm
and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to
everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Then shall the Priest say, Hear what comfortable words our
Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him.
OME unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I
will refresh you. St. Matth. xi. 28.
Answer. Refresh, O Lord, thy servant wearied with the burden of
sin.
So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son,
to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but
have everlasting life. St. John iii. 16
Lord, I believe in thy Son Jesus Christ, and let this faith purify
me from all iniquity.
Hear also what Saint Paul saith.
This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received,
That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. i.
15.
I embrace with all thankfulness that salvation that Jesus has
brought into the world.
Hear also what Saint John saith.
If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins:
and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

 THE OFFERTORY
Then the Priest kisses the Altar, and turning to the people says:

V. The Lord be with you. V. Dominus vobiscum.

Then he says. Let us pray. and the V. Oremus.
Offertory verse.

Which having been said, if the Mass be solemn, the Deacon presents the
Paten with the Host to the celebrant: if it be private, the Priest himself
takes the Paten with the Host, which he offers, saying:

ECEIVE, O holy Father, USCIPE, sancte Pater,

almighty everlasting God, omnipotens aeterne Deus,
this spotless host, which I, hanc immaculatam hostiam,
thine unworthy servant, offer quam ego indignus famulus
unto thee, my living and true tuus offero tibi, Deo meo vivo
God, for my numberless sins, et vero, pro innumerabilibus
offences and negligences; and peccatis, et offensionibus, et
for all who stand here around, negligentiis meis, et pro
as also for all faithful omnibus circumstantibus, a
Christians, both living and sed et pro omnibus fidelibus
departed, that to me and to Christianis vivis atque vivis
them it may avail for salvation atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis

Then making a cross with the same Paten, he places the Host upon the
Corporal. The Deacon ministers the wine, the Subdeacon the water in the
Chalice: or if it be a private Mass, the Priest pours in both, and blesses with
the sign of the Cross the water to be mixed in the Chalice saying:

O God, who didst wondrously Deus, qui humanae

create, and yet more substantiae dignitatem
wondrously renew the dignity mirabiliter condidisti, et
of human nature: grant that by mirabilius reformasti: da nobis

¶ In Masses of the Dead the foregoing Prayer is said: but the water is not
blessed.

Then he receives the Chalice, and offers it, saying:

We offer unto thee, O Lord, Offerimus tibi, Domine,
the cup of salvation, humbly calicem salutaris tuam
beseeching thy mercy: that in deprecantes clementiam: ut in
the sight of thy divine majesty conspectu divinae majestatis
it may ascend as a sweet- tuae, pro nostra et totius

Then he makes the sign of the cross with the Chalice and places it upon the
Corporal, and covers it with the Pall: then with hands joined upon the

Standing erect, he extends his hands, raises them and joins them, and

Then bowing slightly, he takes both parts of the Host between the thumb
and forefinger of his left hand, and places the Paten between the same
forefinger and the middle finger, and beating his breast three times with
his right hand, he says thrice, devoutly and humbly, raising his voice a
little:

Afterwards signing himself with his right hand with the Host over the

And bowing himself, he reverently takes both parts of the Host: which
having been consumed, he puts the Paten down upon the Corporal, and
raising himself, joins his hands, and is still for a little space in meditation
on the Most Holy Sacrament. Then he uncovers the Chalice, genuflects,
collects the fragments, if there be any, and cleanses the Paten over the
Chalice, saying meanwhile:

What reward shall I give unto Quid retribuam Domino pro

the Lord for all the benefits
that he hath done unto me? I
will receive the cup of
salvation, and call upon the
name of the Lord. I will call
upon the Lord which is worthy

receives the Blood with the particle. Having received it, if there be any to
be communicated, let him communicate them, before he purify himself.

COMMUNION OF THE FAITHFUL

Taking the Chalice or Ciborium in his left hand, and one particle, which he
holds between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand somewhat
raised above the ciborium or Chalice: and turning to the people in the
midst of the Altar, he says in a clear voice:

Behold the Lamb of God, Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit

THE ABLUTIONS

Wine is poured into the chalice, which the priest drinks, and says:

The server pours water and wine over the fingers of the priest, into the
chalice, who dries his fingers with the purificator cloth, and says, silently:

that no stain of sin may
remain in me, whom thou

He washes and wipes his fingers, and takes the ablution: he wipes his
mouth and the Chalice, which, having folded the Corporal, he covers and
places on the Altar as before: then he proceeds with the Mass.
