PROCESS CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATIONS

TUTORIAL 1

1. Answer the following question:

Figure 1

i. Determine the control objective for the process

ii. Determine the manipulation variable in this system
iii. Determine the disturbance variables

2. Answer the following question:

Figure 2

i. Determine the control objective for the process

ii. Determine the manipulation variable in this system
iii. Determine the disturbance variables
3. Sketch the process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) for an automatic control system to
control the temperature of the water from a common shower, that is a system that will
automatically do what you do when you adjust the temperature of the water when you take a
shower. Identify the measurement (M), decision (D) and action (A) devices of your control system.

4. A quite simple control system has only one controlled variable and one manipulated variable. For
most practical applications, there are multiple controlled variables and multiple manipulated
variables. Consider the distillation column in Figure 3, choose five (5) controlled variables and four
(4) multiple variables. Given:

Heat duties for the condenser: QD

Heat duties for the reboiler: QB
Liquid level in the reflux drum: hD
Liquid level in the column base: hB
Product composition at distillate: XD
Product composition at bottom: XB
Product flow rate at distillate: D
Product flow rate at bottom: B
Column pressure: P
Reflux flow: R
