RATIONALE:

Barangay Upper Sicpao is one of the Barangay in the Municipality of Sominot. In which

the source of income of the people living in this area mostly through farming, where they are

commonly engaged in corn production as well as they rely in coconut produce. The most

common problem of farmers on this community is lack of capital and lack of knowledge on how

to generate other income instead of relying in coconut produce with a better management of a

certain commodity like Abaca that it can be intercrop with coconut. Abaca could improve their

socio economic conditions, sustain peace and development, as well as conserve the environment.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

A. General Objectives

The general objectives of the projects are to earn other incomes, improve access to basic

needs and thereby improve family’s quality of life. At the same time the abaca processing

companies will benefits from a reliable and sustainable supply of quality raw materials.

B. Specific Objectives
a. To secure regular cash inflow
b. To look after the welfare of the community
c. To ensure minimal negative effect to the environment
d. To acquire additional knowledge on agricultural activities like in abaca production to

uplift their standard of living

IV. PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTED OUTPUT

A. Market Aspect
The PHILFIDA will take lead in marketing the production of the beneficiaries thru the

marketing committee created. . They will be responsible for giving a fair price of their

products.
B. Technical Aspect
Output statement
a. 15 beneficiaries of Upper Sicpao attended series of training during the course of

project implementation.
b. A total of 7.5 hectares prepared and planted to abaca with 15 beneficiaries.
c. Each beneficiary must have 500 square meters to be planted with abaca.
d. 15 beneficiaries marketed their produce.
Site Selection
15 beneficiaries are to established 500 meter square each. Sites are properly selected and

measured to ensure that expect area is allotted to the project.


 Plant abaca in nearly plain and sloppy areas.
 Choose the area which are not waterlogged during rainy season or located in cool

and shady area favorable for newly planted abaca during the dry season .
Training
Beneficiaries will attend series of training like nursery management, plot and land

preparation, fertilizing, pest control management, pre and post harvest handling and other

necessary topics on the basis of what is needed in during the course of project

implementation.
Visit to establish abaca areas will be done to motivate and encourage farmers to adopt

improve technologies and to have a farmer to farmer discussion thus enabling them to learn

from farmer experience.


Nursery Establishment
 The site for abaca nursery should be: located in flat or rolling areas but not in steep

places , accessible and not too far from the road , well drained and does not get

flooded during heavy rains. This is to avoid rotting of the seed pieces and/ or planting

materials, near a river or creek which can be good source of water during drought.
 Planting material: corm is a good planting material since it is less bulky and will

easily germinate. Do not mix different cultivars. Choose healthy and disease free

planting materials to avoid disease infestation of the area.


 Chop the corms into seed pieces having 1 or 2 eye buds in each sidepiece. They

should be free any pests and diseases to reduce disease infestation to the abaca

growing areas.
 Place the seed pieces in bags and store the seed pieces in cool and shaded areas to

reduce damage and dehydration.


 Label each bag with the cultivars name and the number of seed pieces

accommodated.

Planting of Abaca
This abaca production project will be following the technology employed on the farmer’s

guide that will be distributed during training.


Crop Maintenance
The beneficiaries are responsible for maintaining the growth and development of the

crops, which include weeding, fertilization and pest control. Pest control will only be
employed whenever necessary .Watering of the crops will be advice twice a month during

dry season.

Harvesting and Marketing


Abaca matures from 18 to 24 months after planting under normal conditions or upon the

appearance of the flag leaf. Subsequent harvest is done 3-4 months interval. The PO will

create a marketing committee. This will be responsible in facilitating market activities. To

ensure volume of production, the beneficiaries will endorse their produce in volume to the

marketing committee.
C. Organizational and Management Aspect
The association shall manage the income generating activity of the proponent members,

thru project monitoring, regular monthly meeting, visits and reporting the progress of the

project, creating a project monitoring group, procurement of additional materials or further

expansion or identification of next in line beneficiaries or to interested groups, identification

of person to be trained.

D. Finacial Aspect

The total project cost of the abaca production of Barangay Upper Sicpao Sominot

Zamboanga Del Sur is P 450,000.00; the amount requested to the prospective funder P

400,000.00 and the rest is from the beneficiaries in the amount of P50,000.00.
E. Socio – Economic Aspect

The abaca production of the beneficiaries will help them increase the productivity of

their abaca farms and their incomes. Learn about and implement sustainable production

practices and to establish or enhance abaca farms through the introduction of better farm

management practices.

The beneficiary shall be able to improve their skills and knowledge regarding abaca

production and other resource skills through training and seminars to be conducted thus

strengthening them and making them active in the community activities.

With the rising demand for certified abaca fiber all over the world, our abaca

farmers will only be able to benefit from this opportunity if they can improve their fiber

production in quantity and in quality. Achieving this will allow them to earn higher incomes,

improve access to basic needs such as food or school expenses for their kids, and thereby

improve their families’ quality of life. At the same time, the abaca processing companies will

benefit from a reliable and sustainable supply of quality raw materials. From this, the whole

abaca industry sector may benefit.
