I. Anatomy/ Structure / Function

a. Discussion of Anatomy involved
the lamina is removed to gain access to the part which is affected specifically T3 and T4
are the vertebra which is affected. (Lamina is a general anatomical term meaning "plate"
or "layer.")

The T4 vertebra is the fourth thoracic vertebra that makes up the middle segment of spinal column of
the human body. The thoracic spinal vertebrae consist of 12 total vertebrae and are located between the
cervical vertebrae (which begin at the base of the skull) and the lumbar spinal vertebrae.

b. Functions of organs body part involved

The spinal column supports the top of the human body. It extends from the pelvis up the length of the
back, connecting to the skull. The spinal column is a structure that provides housing and protection for the
spinal cord. The cord is the center of the neural network that connects the brain to the rest of the body,
and carries out the function of sending signals to control breathing, heartbeat, and muscular contraction.

The vertebrae that make up the spinal column have a specific shape that is made to protect the spinal cord
from injury. The T4 vertebra is located about midway up the spine. The portion of the spinal cord that the
thoracic vertebrae protect is referred to as the thoracic cord. This part of the cord sends and receives
signals from the area of the abdomen just above the waist. Injury to these vertebrae may cause several
further problems, including the loss of feeling from the abdomen down to the lower extremities,
permanent damage to the nerves, and even paralysis.

c. Etiology of the disease

The cause of schwannomas is not clear, although it appears genetics play a role. Most people that
have spinal schwannomas are between 30 and 60 years old, though they can occur at any age.
Those with a family history of spine cancer are also at a higher risk.

d. Signs and Symptoms

As the tumor grows, it will affect different parts of the spine, nerves, blood vessels and bones. As
the this growth occurs, symptoms will vary, including:

Back pain

Weakness or numbness in the arms and legs

Electric-like shock sensations when the affected area is touched

Loss of bladder or bowel function

Paralysis

e. Discusssion of operation performed

Laminectomy is surgery that creates space by removing the lamina — the back part of a vertebra
that covers your spinal canal. Also known as decompression surgery, laminectomy enlarges your
spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves

An excision of a tumor is a surgical treatment that addresses bone tumors (abnormal growths
appearing in bone tissue), usually in the form of a lump or mass. They appear when cells—for
reasons not yet fully understood—divide and grow in an irregular, uncontrolled way. When a
tumor forms in a bone, it can begin taking the place of normal, healthy tissue, weakening the
bone’s structure and making it more susceptible to fracture.

f. Intra and post-operative risk factors

Risk factors of the procedure are infection, spinal paralysis, and nerve damage. So it is always
important to monitor the patient after certain procedures to know if there are complications of the
operation.
