Lesson Idea Name: Who Do you Want to be? Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level(s): Kindergarten Content Standard Addressed: SSKE1 Describe the work that people do such as: police officer, fire fighter, soldier, mail carrier, farmer, doctor, teacher, etc.
Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Engagement: By letting the kids share with the class what they want to be then that get more excited to participate and learn about each other. For the kids that are a little shyer about sharing you could let them whisper it in your ear instead of saying it out loud. Representation:. Some kids may be more comfortable using paper and they can draw their graph (may be hard for such a young age but possible). Action and Expression: If they all have their own device they could be given the choice to make any of the charts and not just a bar graph. For the kids really good at graphs you can add in a few extra things they have to include or have them take their own survey of the class.
Lesson idea implementation: We will start off all together in the front of the class. I will tell the students that today we are going to learn about different jobs in the world but first I want to know what job they want when they grow up. One by one I will ask what they want to be and I will write the job title on the board with tally marks next to it for how many people want to do that job (later I will change the tallies to the total number). If we have individual iPads then each student will get to create their own pie graph but if not then everyone will get a turn to do something.
We are going to use Excel to put our new information into a pie chart. We will go through each step together as class starting with entering the titles “Future Job” and “Number of people” in Column A and B. Then we will put all the jobs going down Column A and all the numbers going down Column B and corresponding correctly. Then we will learn how to highlight it and create the graph. I will show the students how to change the colors of the pie slices and if they are doing it on their own they can chose whatever colors they want.
Reflective Practice: This would be used as the introduction to the standard of study. After this lesson we would begin going through all the jobs and learning about each one in more depth. We could use videos to show what the jobs are and maybe have guests come and tell the kids about their job. The kids could make PowerPoint’s about their chosen job.
