Terzaghi and Peck’s Correlation
Terzaghi and Peck’s proposed the following correlation of
determining elastic settlement in sand with SPT.
𝟐
𝟑𝒒 𝑩
𝑺𝒆 (𝒎𝒎) = 𝑪𝑾 𝑪𝑫
𝑵𝟔𝟎 𝑩 + 𝟎. 𝟑

Where,

𝐶𝑊 = groundwater table correction

𝐷𝑓
𝐶𝐷 = correction for depth of embedment = 1 −
4𝐵
𝐷𝑓 = depth of embedment (𝑚)
𝑞 = bearing pressure (𝑘𝑁 𝑚2 )
𝐵 = width of foundation (𝑚)
𝑁60 = field standard penetration number
Terzaghi and Peck’s Correlation
 The magnitude of 𝑪𝑾 is equal to 𝟏. 𝟎 if the depth of the
water table is greater than or equal to 𝟐𝑩 below the
foundation, and it is equal to 𝟐. 𝟎 if the depth of the
water table is less than or equal to 𝑩 below the
foundation.

 The 𝑵𝟔𝟎 values used in Eq. should be the average

value of up to a depth of about 𝟑𝑩 to 𝟒𝑩 measured
from the bottom of the foundation.
Meyerhof’s Correlation
 Meyerhof compared the predicted and observed
settlements of eight structures and proposed the
following equations-
𝟏. 𝟐𝟓𝒒
𝑺𝒆 𝒎𝒎 = 𝑪𝑾 𝑪𝑫 (𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝑩 ≤ 𝟏. 𝟐𝟐 𝒎)
𝑵𝟔𝟎
𝟐
𝟐𝒒 𝑩
𝑺𝒆 𝒎𝒎 = 𝑪𝑾 𝑪𝑫 (𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝑩 > 𝟏. 𝟐𝟐 𝒎)
𝑵𝟔𝟎 𝑩 + 𝟎. 𝟑

Where,

The parameters having same unit as stated in Terzaghi and

Peck’s correlation.
Peck and Bazaraa’s Correlation
According to Peck and Bazaraa-
𝟐
𝟐𝒒 𝑩
𝑺𝒆 𝒎𝒎 = 𝑪𝑾 𝑪𝑫
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 𝑩 + 𝟎. 𝟑
Peck and Bazaraa’s Correlation

Where,
𝒒 is in 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟐 ; 𝑩 is in 𝒎
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 = corrected standard penetration number
𝝈𝟎 at 𝟎. 𝟓𝑩 below the bottom of the foundation
𝑪𝑾 =
𝝈′𝟎 at 𝟎. 𝟓𝑩 below the bottom of the foundation
𝝈𝟎 = total overburden pressure
𝝈′𝟎 = effective overburden pressure
𝟎.𝟓
𝜸𝑫𝒇
𝑪𝑫 = 𝟏 − 𝟎. 𝟒
𝒒
𝜸 = unit weight of soil
Peck and Bazaraa’s Correlation
The relationships for 𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 are-
𝟒𝑵𝟔𝟎
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 = (𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝝈′𝟎 ≤ 𝟕𝟓 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟐 )
𝟏 + 𝟎. 𝟎𝟒𝝈′𝟎
𝟒𝑵𝟔𝟎
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 = (𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝝈′𝟎 > 𝟕𝟓 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟐 )
𝟑. 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟎. 𝟎𝟏𝝈′𝟎
Peck and Bazaraa’s Correlation
The relationships for 𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 are-
𝟒𝑵𝟔𝟎
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 = (𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝝈′𝟎 ≤ 𝟕𝟓 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟐 )
𝟏 + 𝟎. 𝟎𝟒𝝈′𝟎
𝟒𝑵𝟔𝟎
𝑵𝟏 𝟔𝟎 = (𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝝈′𝟎 > 𝟕𝟓 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟐 )
𝟑. 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟎. 𝟎𝟏𝝈′𝟎
