“Bullying is an issue that is difficult to be eliminated in schools.

Bullying in schools is a discipline problem and may interrupt the
teaching and learning process. It often receives attention from
parents who are concerned that such an activity can develop into
fights, which can lead to serious injury or even death.”

Norshidah Mohamad Salleh & Khalim Zainal (2014)

Bullying can be defined as the way of treating people roughly with the intent of
showing one’s strength and hurting one's heart with deeds and words. According to
Anna (t.t.), most of the bullies are victims of bullying that have been harmed and
disregarded. The bully victim fills angry and depressed by this situation. Therefore,
they show strength and release anger by bullying other students. This is according to
the study of Alsaker and Valkanover (2001), reported that 16 percent of boys aged
between 5 years to 7 years 11 months may be classified as bullying victims and they
are subsequently bullying other children. According to Marg (2017), there are many
types of bullying. The most important bullying is physical bullying that can be defined
as a form of bullying that takes place through the use of the physical body like hitting,
kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing that causes both short-term and long-term
damage. Other than that like verbal bullying that can be defined as a form of bullying
that takes place through the use of conversation like name-calling, insults, and racist
remarks. Social bullying that can be defined as a form of bullying that takes place
through the use of social effect like encouraging others to socially exclude someone,
damaging someone's social reputation or social acceptance and playing nasty jokes
to embarrass and humiliate that cause humiliation. Cyberbullying that can be defined
as a form of bullying that takes place through the use of digital technologies like
nasty gossip, abusive and hurtful text emails or posts, images or videos. Therefore, I
agree with this statement that says bullying is an issue that is difficult to be eliminated
in school. It is always darkest before the dawn, then it just same like bullying where
this problem can be eradicated by knowing why this bullying problem continues
among students in the school.

According to Muhaya (2014), the cause of the bullying issue among students in the
school is the lack of religious education in life. This is because according to Azizi
Yahya (2008), parents are too busy looking for money and being materialistic until

1
they have neglected their responsibilities towards their children as a forming religion.
Furthermore, parents are too expecting maids to provide adequate affection and
religious education to their children where it is uncertain that the maid is able to
produce a child as desired. In addition, the formal education system at school now
emphasizes on academic programs that ignore religious education. This will result in
outstanding academic achievement, but not in spiritually and emotionally. For
example, parents leave work as early as 6.30am and return late at night. They have
no time to take notice of the development of the children, especially those who are
still studying and at school, no exposure to religion has caused the child to feel
depressed and to release his anger to other students. Therefore, the lack of religious
value in themselves is the cause of the bullying issue among students in the school.

Next, according to Hafizah (2017), peer influence in life is the cause of the bullying
issue among students in the school. This is because the students involved in bully
are comprised of the less mature and fail to distinguish whether good or bad and
cause them to follow their bad peers' behaviour and actions. Moreover, when parents
give less attention to the child, then the child will be more trusting and prioritize with
peers than others. As an illustration, peer challenges them to bully weak students by
saying "nothing will happen" and they believe. Then, with an ego who does not want
to lose after being challenged, they bully other students. Other than that, according to
Berthold and Hoover (2000), the bully will also pressure their peers by directing them
to conduct high-risk behaviours like smoking and drinking alcohol. In brief, the cause
of the bullying issue among students in the school is peer influence in themselves.

After that, according to Ismail (2016), the cause of the bullying issue among
students in the school is mass media influence in life. This is because the mass
media, especially the electronic media, are publishing programs and films that are
violent, fights and so on without filtering that will cause students to imitate the action.
Furthermore, the genre of overseas programs and films published in the mass media
has always featured foreign cultures contrary to the local culture. For instance, the
WWE entertainment program is a rugged sporting show featuring scary fights. When
a student saw it, the student had applied it to the wrong place that was for the weak
student. In other words, mass media influence in themselves is the cause of the
bullying issue among students in the school.

Meanwhile, according to Nora (2005), the neglect of teachers in performing their

duties is the cause of bullying issue among students in the school. This is because

2
the teacher is too busy performing many side tasks so that there is not enough time
to monitor and discipline students and as a humanitarian architect. Further, teachers
are too expecting school prefects to monitor and discipline students while school
prefects own fully involved in the bullying of students or school prefects also afraid of
the bully. Other than that, teachers are also keen to praise the clever students and
cause dissatisfaction among the weak students. This will cause the weak student to
become jealous and to be angry with the clever then start bullying the student. As an
example, there is a clever student in math subjects and always praised by teachers.
The bully will start bullying the student by forcing the student to complete his
homework. If he refuses it, he will be beaten by the bully. In particular, the cause of
the bullying issue among students in the school is the neglect of teachers to
students.

In a nutshell, there are many causes of the bullying issue among students in the
school and this issue is still worrying about various parties, especially parents. All in
all, I agree with this statement that says bullying is an issue that is difficult to be
eliminated in school. Therefore, all parties must be committed and work together in
addressing this issue in order to avoid the birth of a troubled generation in the future.
Diligence is the mother of good fortune, systematic steps should be taken by all
parties to curb this bullying issue from continuing to become cancerous among
students. This is because Samuel Johnson once said "the future is bought by the
present". With this intention, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Bin Tun
Abdul Razak to create a generation who are knowledgeable and competent can be
realized by the year 2020 with our independence from bullying issue.
