them. Taking parts in performing something on stage is not as easy as we see when we are the
spectators. In task 3, my friends and I are given task to perform a role play performance on two
novels which are The Jungle Book and Gulliver’s Travel. There are a lot of knowledge and
experience that we gained from the performance. Luckily, we managed to perform a good
performance with guidance from our beloved lecturer, Mr Chan Seong Long. The skills to perform
is vital to be a teacher since teaching itself is one type of performance. According to Rockoff
(2004), interesting teachers give bigger impact rather than interesting subject. In this piece of
writing, there are few things regarding my experience of performing. In producing a great
performance, emphasis of tone and intonation, process of producing role play and the
Firstly, the new thing that I master is the emphasis of tone and intonation to uplift the mood
of the character. According to McEwan (2003), with the guidance of my friend that used to
participate in any performance before, I improve myself by practising the right way to fix my
intonation to be more alive. It is quite challenging because my intonation is quite monotonous and
it is difficult for me to realign my voice. To improve my intonation, I practise talking and record it
to know how I sound. Paulston (1976) stated that those activities are effective enough to work on
somebody’s intonation. In the role play performance, one of my character is as The King. As a
lady, I need to act like how a real king behaves. I have to modify my voice to sound like a man to
Next, during the process of producing the role play, I learnt on how to works in group and
reorganize the script. In our group, we divide task to each pair to come out with simplified script
for the chapter they are doing. By doing this, I learn that we should not be selfish and need to
cooperate well with our teammates. A group of people that do things together have higher
potential than those who do things all by themselves (Ramsden, 1991). After finishing the script,
we proceed with our practice part. During the progress, we face some problems which is we do
not have a proper place to do our practice. Not only that, the practice session is also not smooth
at first since we do not memorise the script yet. So to solve this problem, we discussed with each
other and agreed to memorise as much as we can. According to Tanenbaum (2011), it is almost
impossible to produce a great performance if the actor and actress do not master the steps in the
role play.
Other than that, the implementation of performance kit plays a big role. Since each of us
have our own performance kit, we manage to come out with various type of kits. Not only that,
the performance kits help us to have better presentation of our role play. At first, we chose the
kits that we will use in the role play. In this part, I learnt to differentiate the important things that
we need to have when performing a role play. Due to this awareness, my group manage to come
out with good performance kit like boat, arrow and bow, hair and costume. According to Chang
(2005), props or performance kits are one of big factors that influence the storyline of a
performance. The usage of performance kits helps to uplift the mood of the story and also at the
same time attract the audience’s attention. By choosing the right performance kit, I can make the
In conclusion, there are many thing and experience that I gained through this performance.
To produce a great performance, we need to master the emphasis of tone and intonation. Not
only that the process of producing role play also should be given attention because practice
makes perfect. I have no doubt that if my friends and I did not practise well, we will fail to perform
a good performance. Lastly, the implementation of performance kit gives big effect in a role play.
That means, if we use the correct performance kit we managed to attract the audience to watch
us.
