Why Learn Music?

Music has always been an active part of most cultures, a common thread across them through time. There
is hardly any ancient literature or folklore that does not speak of, or have any direct reference to
music. Music has always been an integral & dominant part of Indian culture as well, but the
emphasis on its education has largely been weak in our schooling system. The importance of music
as a subject and the positive impact it can have on a child’s overall development hasn’t been given
its due attention yet. Although music as an elective is available for students across our main
education boards’ curricula, most schools do not offer it as an option to their students.

A recent study at Northwestern University revealed that students who played musical instruments
have better neural processing in comparison with students who just listen to music. This study
further shows that receiving music education can improve a child’s IQ, his or her capacity to
analyse a particular thought process, and a possible increase in academic excellence. In today’s
era of tremendous competition, stress, and deadlines, experts suggest enrolling for music lessons
and keeping oneself engaged with various musical instruments like guitar, piano, and others is
extremely beneficial in coping. At our music academy in Bangalore, we regularly see several
examples of academic excellence among our students, and in many cases, exceptional musicality
and academic brilliance going hand in hand.

Whether your child wants to pursue music seriously or as a hobby, it is certain that a genuinely
competent music school is a great place to start. Musicianship, whether through voice or playing
an instrument, has many nuances, from language development to applying multiple skills
simultaneously, to developing a connection with other people; it can influence the overall
development of an individual both culturally and physically. At Octavium, we’ve seen music
transform shy & nervous beginners to self assured & poised performers within short spans of a
couple of recitals, in many cases resulting in confident and well rounded personalities in young
ones as well.

Music also has emotional & therapeutic properties which can soothe the soul of anyone
irrespective of their age. Scientifically it is proven that music can have a positive effect on one’s
overall health. This is the reason 'music therapy' for people suffering from anxiety, depression or
stress is fast gaining popularity.

You can be a music enthusiast, actively listening to music and viewing concerts or you can chose
to also learn music - the best way to make a direct connection, and then not just listen, but also
express yourself! While we follow structured curricula across our courses, learning at Octavium
goes well beyond classroom sessions; as they progress, students are provided with opportunities
to collaborate, rehearse, record, perform, attend workshops & concerts, exposing them to various
aspects of music, which makes the learning more engaging, fun & effective. If you are still
wondering whether to include music classes in your busy routine, don’t think further, just go for
it. Enrol with us, be part of the Octavium family. We really do know our music!
