1 Function Description

1.1 Application
Viscosity transducer EVT-10C is a factory
calibrated viscometer for use in fuel oil
treatment systems, to obtain correct
measurement of fuel oil viscosity.

An adapter kit is available for retrofit of the

EVT-10C transducer.

The transducer is also available without

housing as a replacement unit (EVT-10).

1.2 Design
The unit consists of three parts: Housing (1),
Vibrating sensor (2) and Electronic Unit (3)

The vibrating sensor and the electronic unit are

regarded as one unit and must not be separated.

The housing has standard flanges for direct

mounting in line with the fuel flow. The
vibrating sensor with its cover is mounted on
the upper flange of the housing together with
the electronic unit. The electronic unit consists
of a box with a cable gland in the cover.

1.3 Working Principle

A pin (1) is kept vibrating at its resonance
frequency by a motor coil (2). A pickup coil (3)
measures amplitude change due to viscosity
change.

A protection tube (4) encloses and protects the

vibrating pin and limits the flow. A built-in
Pt 100 temperature sensor (6) is used for
factory calibration.

The electronic unit (5) consists of two circuit

boards connected to each other by a flat cable.
Power and output signals are connected to a
4-pole plug of the top board via screw
terminals in the cover.

The out signal from the transducer

(4 – 20 mA) is processed by the VCU-160
control unit to give the correct viscosity value.

G024892A
Since the density as well as the viscosity of the
oil influence the transducer pin oscillating
amplitude, this is taken into account in the
VCU-160 control unit. It is therefore important
that the correct oil density is provided by the
oil supplier in order that the VCU-160 control
unit can make a correct viscosity calculation.

For systems with no VCU-160 control unit the

correct viscosity value has to be calculated.
For information about density compensation
calculation for an installation without an Alfa
Laval control unit, please contact your Alfa
Laval representative.

the causes of problems, and how to remedy
them:

Rapidly fluctuating signal (seconds) EVT unstably mounted Mount rigidly. It may also help to
turn the transducer 90° in housing

direction.

vibration.

a way that air and gas cannot

2 Fault Finding EVT-10C

Fault conditions detected by the transducer

microprocessor result in 0 mA on the current
output (transmitter fault) from the viscosity
transducer electronic unit. The two LEDs
(H1 and H2) on the upper circuit board indicate
functions and faults according to the following
table.

G025041A
LED Indications
H1 H2 Cause Corrective action

OFF 0.7 s flash/0.7 s pause Normal operation

ON short flash/long pause RAM-PROM-E2 PROM fault Replace transducer

ON two short flashes/long pause Analogue circuit fault Replace transducer

OFF short flash/long pause Analogue output current fault Replace transducer

ON short flash/long pause or two Oscillating circuit fault Replace transducer

The indication of a faulty watchdog circuit is not predictable, but most likely H1 and H2 would be ON.

3 Maintenance

The viscosity transducer does not normally

need any maintenance. It is however
recommended to regularly check the viscosity
reading against oil analysis and offset the
signal if required.

In exceptional cases, it may be necessary to

clean the sensor by putting it in a strong
detergent. Do not clean the vibrating pin
mechanically.

NOTE

Be careful not to damage the vibrating

pin. Any damage will affect the
viscosity signal.

WARNING

Burn Hazard

Before dismantling shut off the oil feed.

The oil may be hot and cause burns.

3.1 Fuse Replacement.

Check fuses F1 and F2. Replace as needed.

3.2 Replacing the

Viscosity Transducer
The viscosity transducer must be replaced
when the fault condition LEDs indicate a
faulty transducer
(see ‘‘Fault Finding’’ on page 3).

The vibrating sensor and the electronic unit are

replaced together as one unit.
1. Disconnect the cables from the electronic
unit. Loosen the nuts holding the
transducer to the housing and remove the
unit.
2. Replace the O-ring.
3. Mount the new transducer unit and
reconnect the cables to the terminals.
4. Fill in the fault report form accompanying
the transducer and return it with the faulty
transducer to Alfa Laval.

5 Installation

NOTE

If the specifications are not followed,

Alfa Laval cannot be held responsible
for any malfunction related to the
installation.

5.1 Mechanical Installation

• The EVT-10C viscosity transducer must
be mounted as rigidly as possible with
supporting brackets directly against the
transducer.
• The transducer should be located in such a

G025243A
way that no air or gas pockets can form.
Air will disturb the transducer Recommended installation to avoid air pockets and for
measurement. less heat on the electronic unit

• The transducer should be mounted in line

with the system fuel flow. If the fuel flow
is higher than the max. allowable flow for
the transducer (see “Technical Data”), a
bypass must be included.
• If the EVT10-C viscosity transducer is
used for retrofit, it should be
complemented with adapter kit No.
1763805-80.
• It is recommended to insulate the
transducer housing so that heat emission
to the electronic box is avoided. The
electronic box should not be insulated.

5 Installation EVT-10C

5.1.1 Electrical Connection

• The connection cable to the viscosity
transducer must be shielded. It is
important to connect the shield to the
cover using the cable gland only. The
screw terminals for the power supply and
the output signal are mounted in the cover.
• Connections to the terminals must be in
accordance with the interconnection
diagram for the appropriate system.
• Switch S1 sets the viscosity transducer to
accept either 48V AC or 24V AC power
supply.
• Signal cable from the viscosity transducer
should be max. circa 100 m.

G025251A
• If the 4 – 20 mA signal is connected to an
automation system, it should be connected
1. Shield earth connector
via a signal isolator. Max. load that can be 2. Shield
connected is 400 Ω.

NOTE

To prevent damage, make sure that

switch S1, located on the upper circuit
board, is set to the correct position
before power is applied.
