Choosing your topic. Narrowing down your topic.

Your topic is the subject or issue you want to research​. It can be politics, business, sports, fashion,
technology, environment, etc…

When you choose your topic consider the following:

1. What are you interested in?​ It will be easier to write about something you like!
2. What do you know already?​ Having knowledge of the topic can be the foundation for your article.
3. What are others interested in?​ Know who your audience is or what they want to read.

Exercise 1:​ Write down 3 possible topics for your article.

Narrowing down your topic into an idea.

Now that you have 3 choices of topics, you need to narrow down each topic into an idea.

Step 1. Be specific. To do this use TPT - type, place, time.

Example topic​: ​ ​1. Entertainment/ ​2. Cuisine​/ ​ ​3. Education 

To be more specific, we need to decide on the type of food, the place of the food, and the time for the food.
Type​: ​Movies/series based on real stories Place​:​ ​Turkey ​Time​:​ ​Now
​Type​:​ ​World cuisine ​Place​:​ ​World​ ​Time​:​ ​Now 
Type​: ​Education system ​Place​:​ ​Canada ​ ​Time​:​ ​Now 

New specific idea​:​The newest Turkish movies/series (in Turkey). 

New specific idea​: ​The best 10 cuisines in the world. 
New specific idea​:​ ​Understanding the American Education System in North America. 
 

Step 2. Be even MORE specific. Add additional descriptions to the idea. Use the 5 Wh and How.

New MORE specific idea: ​Dramatic Turkish series of 2017 in Turkey. 

New MORE specific idea:​Top 5 Finest Cuisines in the world. 
New MORE specific idea:​The educational system in Canada. 
Step 3: Change vague words​.

Final idea: ​The three best dramatic Turkish series of 2017 in Turkey. 

Final idea: ​The most popular cuisine in the world. 

Final idea: ​The Schooling System in Montreal.

How do I know if my idea is still too broad?

1. Is there too much information to research? You find thousands of sources for your idea.
2. Will it be more than the length of my article? You have information for 10 pages. The article is 2 pg.

Final Idea:​The three best dramatic Turkish series of 2017 in Turkey.

Topic 2: ​Cuisine

Final Idea: ​The most popular cuisine in the world.

Topic 3 : ​Education
