8. sonnet 29
9. the lottery
truly great
By Stephen Spender
Born of the sun they travelled a short while towards the sun ,
Die not, poore death , nor yet canst thou kill mee .
Katniss Everdeen lives in the Seam located in District 12 in the country of Panem. She is responsible for feeding
herself, her sister Primrose , and her mother, so she illegally hunts with her best friend Gale . Gale , a young man of
eighteen , is sixteen-year-old Katniss' best friend .On reaping day Primrose is chosen . Primrose is only twelve , so Katniss
volunteers to take her place . The young man chosen is Peeta Mellark , who is the same age as Katniss. These two will represent
District 12 in the Hunger Games, it is a forced game in which two children from each of the 12 districts surrounding the
Capitol must participate . The Games are a fight to the death , the last tribute , as they are called , alive is the victor. They are
taken to the Capitol , along with Haymitch Abernathy their mentor and Effie Trinket their escort from the Capitol .Upon
arriving at Capitol , they are dressed for the opening ceremony. After riding in the ceremony dressed to look as if they are
on fire , the two are assigned a floor at the Training Center. At the Training Center, their home until the start of the
Games, Haymitch tells them to hide their strengths from the other tributes. Katniss' strength is her skill with a bow and
arrow and Peeta's is his weight lifting abilities. They show off their strengths to the Gamemakers, the people who run the
Games, in their private sessions with them.Katniss is afraid of becoming close to Peeta, because she knows she may have to
kill him during the Games.Katniss scores an eleven in the training portion of the Games. This raises hopes that the pair
will attract many sponsors, who send supplies to them while the Games are in progress. The next day they are interviewed
on television . Peeta announces to the country he has had a crush on Katniss for a long time , but she has never known
about it. This makes the country love them and feel sorry for them, because they know only one of them can survive the
Games. The Games begin the next day. Katniss picks up a backpack and a few other supplies; she keeps a knife thrown into
her backpack .
That evening she hears a group of tributes, the Careers, searching for lone tributes. She climbs a tree to escape
them, but they find her. She is surprised to see Peeta among this group. She knows they will eventually get to her and kill
her, but another tribute , named Rue , shows her a tracker wasp nest in the tree . The stings can kill , so Katniss cuts it
down . A tribute with an bow and arrows dies and Katniss takes the weapon . She is surprised to see Peeta arrive back at the
tree to ensure her safe escape from the others.Rue approaches Katniss and the two form an alliance . Katniss and Rue decide
to destroy the supplies the Careers have gathered . After Katniss destroys the supplies she waits for Rue at the rendezvous,
but she doesn't show up and Katniss starts looking for her. She finds her trapped under a net and sees her impaled with a
spear. Katniss comforts Rue as she dies. That night a rule change is announced . If two tributes from the same district are
the last survivors, they both will be victors. At this news, Katniss cries out Peeta's name .She finds Peeta, but he is injured
from a knife cut to his thigh . She manages to find a cave for them to hide in and tries to treat his wound , but he is
running a fever and develops blood poisoning.
Katniss knows to receive the medicine Peeta needs, Haymitch will want her to play up the romance between her
and Peeta. This will allow him to garner sponsors to pay for medicine . The sponsors are watching the Games, because they
are broadcast on television to the whole country. It is announced a feast is being prepared for the tributes and each will
receive something they need at the feast. Katniss attends the feast and retrieves a syringe of medicine for Peeta. She suffers
a knife cut to her forehead as she takes the syringe , but manages to get back to Peeta. She gives him the medicine before she
passes out.She wakes up to find Peeta is much better. The romance begins to feel real to Katniss, as she and Peeta have
bonded .The Gamemakers force a show down between them and the only other surviving tribute , Cato, at the lake . There a
group of mutants pursue them, they are half wolf, half human and the human half is the dead tributes. Cato tries to save
himself by taking Peeta hostage , but Katniss shoots him and he falls into the clutches of the mutants. Katniss shoots him
the next day to end his agony. The Gamemakers then change the rules again , by declaring only one of them can be the
victor. They outwit them by deciding to commit suicide , which forces the Gamemakers to name them both winners.Back at
Capitol , Katniss finds out from Haymitch she and Peeta are in grave danger, because the Capitol is angry with the way they
resolved the issue of killing one another. This made the Capitol look foolish , so they want to punish them, especially
Katniss. The only way out is to make believe her love for Peeta compelled her do it. This is what she does and they are
allowed to go home .On the way home Peeta finds out Katniss was acting like she loved him. He is heartbroken , but goes
along with the act. Katniss in the end is not sure of how she feels towards Peeta. This is a story of impossible odds overcome
through teamwork , love , and a need to survive . Katniss is a strong teenager who will do whatever is necessary to make it
through the Games. While Peeta, finds he is stronger than he ever realized .
I Have A Dream
I have a dream, a song to sing
I believe in angels
I believe in angels
I believe in angels
I believe in angels
I believe in angels
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
Imagine
Imagine there's no heaven
No hell below us
It isn't hard to do
Imagine no possessions
A brotherhood of man
MARIA ZAPETIS
Maria Zapetis is a senior at Miami Country Day School in Miami , Fla. Maria was
inspired to help fight global poverty and hunger after she participated in a summer program
that simulated living conditions in developing nations.
Last year my beliefs changed .Until last summer I had a very comfortable life:
winter vacations skiing and summer cruises. My parents spent a lot of money on a private prep
school , so they could get me into a competitive middle school , followed by the uber-expensive
high school . Everything was about tomorrow, next year, my graduation . We never had to
worry about today. Before last summer I never thought much about the people in the world who
live day to day, everyday. Whose lives are controlled by poverty and hunger. Then I enrolled in
a two-week intensive program sponsored by Heifer International . We lived in a "Tribal Village ,"
in a hot, dry open grassland in Arkansas. I know it was only a simulation , that I could go back
to my regular life , but the experience gave birth to a belief in helping others. Today.I am a
tribal member in Mozambique . Every meal I make the fire for my family, and feel the flames
lick up my nostrils as I blow to keep the fuel alive . I cook mush with vegetables. This is all my
family is ever given .I feed the hen and three rabbits their dinner. I grow attached to the rabbits,
even though I know I shouldn't. I name them.We are living in a house that feels like an oven
with no air conditioning like I am used to, and even though water is available , everyone is too
hot and tired to move . I go to the kitchen — an area of dirt floor — to make the fire for breakfast.
Again I stir and eat the same unfulfilling mush . It's a bad dream, over and over and over
again . My lungs fill up with smoke , ash blocks my vision and I can almost see through the eyes
of people who really live like this every single day with no hope for change .I'm not getting
enough to eat; it's time to decide whether or not to kill the rabbits. I feel pain , but it's a
privileged child's pain because I know I will soon be eating again . That's not true for a lot of
other children around the world .Growing up comfortably in the U.S., I've never had to worry
about my dinner, and even though this whole process was only a simulation , it changed my
life . Now I believe in doing whatever I can to help find practical ways to defeat hunger.
Today. So I've become president of Roots and Shoots, a group working to improve local
environments for people and animals. I'm also working to create a program at my high school
called the "Safe Passage" trip, to help young people in the Guatemala City dump. And I've got
plans to do more .If I ever feel lethargic, I remember laboring in the hot sun and think of the
millions who still do. Now, I try to live for today and stop worrying so much about the future .
When I eat or feel full , I am grateful for this fortunate life and want to extend the same feeling
to others.
Scott Simon’s first Twitter message about his mother, dated July 16, squeezed a universal
story involving heartbreak and humor into 21 words. He wrote: “Mother called: ‘I can’t talk . I’m surrounded
by handsome men .’ Emergency surgery. If you can hold a thought for her now ... ”The ellipsis hinted that
he’d have more to say later, and he did . “We never stop learning from our mothers, do we?” he asked on
July 25. By then his mother, Patricia Lyons Simon Newman , 84, had spent several nights in the intensive
care unit of a Chicago-area hospital . And Twitter users around the world were getting to know her, thanks
to the short bursts of commentary by Mr. Simon , the host of “Weekend Edition Saturday” on NPR .The
tweets captured the attention of a significant portion of the social-media world for days.Mr. Simon wrote on
Monday morning that “her passing might come any moment,” and that evening it did , when she died
after being treated for cancer. Borrowing from “Romeo and Juliet,” he wrote , “She will make the face of
heaven shine so fine that all the world will be in love with night,” and then stopped tweeting for half a
day.“When I began to tweet, I had almost no thought that this was going to be my mother ’s deathbed ,” Mr.
Simon said in a telephone interview on Wednesday, after the outpouring of emotion — his Twitter
audience’s as well as his own — had made national headlines. His mother, he said , had originally gone
into the hospital for a blood test.“As it got more serious, she was just so marvelously entertaining and
insightful ,” he said . “I found it irresistible .”In the past he might have done that through a book or a
recorded segment for his radio program. (Mr. Simon commented on the deaths of his father and stepfather
in his 2000 memoir, “Home and Away.”) But the Internet enabled him to celebrate his mother and mourn
her in real time , creating the sense this week that an online community was collectively grieving with
him.The online reactions were overwhelmingly positive; some people thanked Mr. Simon for letting them
get to know Ms. Newman and described what she had in common with their own mothers. A smattering of
online comments, he said , were critical , suggesting that sharing such intimate moments was inappropriate .
“Exploiting his mother ’s last days for ratings and fame ,” read one comment accompanying an ABC News
article about Mr. Simon’s tweets.“Social media is most poignant when it gives us a window on stories that
would otherwise go untold ,” said Burt Herman , a co-founder of Storify, an Internet company that markets
what it calls social storytelling tools. “The stories can be voyeuristic, like a couple fighting at a Burger King.
But at their best, these stories give us a deeply personal view into life’s inflection points, whether it ’s a
revolution abroad or an intimate moment between a mother and son .”Mr. Simon said he wanted people to
know that “I wasn’t holding my mother in my arms and tweeting with my free hand .”Our columnist
Andrew Ross Sorkin and his Times colleagues help you make sense of major business and policy headlines —
and the power-brokers who shape them.He added: “As you may know, an incurable illness like this is a lot
like war. There are moments of panic and anxiety, separated by hours of tedium.”Sometimes Ms. Newman
gave Mr. Simon , and by extension some of his 1. 2 million Twitter followers, a reason to smile or chuckle:
“Believe me ,” she told him on Saturday, “those great deathbed speeches are written ahead of time .”
Sometimes, she seemed to want Mr. Simon to share bits of advice . On Sunday, he encapsulated this thought
from his mother: “Listen to people in their 80s. They have looked across the street at death for a
decade .”Mr. Simon resumed posting to Twitter on Tuesday; he jocularly recounted how the couple who run a
cremation service call themselves “posthealth professionals.” During the interview on Wednesday he cried
while expressing thanks for the “love and support and prayers” from people . He said he had given precisely
no thought to the societal implications of sharing his mother ’s life and death .But others have . “We have
reached a point in the way we think about our lives where our stories of struggle and loss feel like they no
longer belong solely to us,” said Joe Lambert, founder of the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley,
Calif. Being able to broadcast them, on Twitter or elsewhere online , “feels like a gift to those grieving in our
families, our communities and as far as a tweet might reach .”
Carmencita Carcillar says she was able to revive her husband , Reynaldo, when he had his first heart
attack in 2009.InterAksyon .com tracked down the story of the final day of the pedicab driver whose death
has sparked intense debate and introspection among readers. Nameless and faceless until now, Reynaldo
Carcillar died a tragically lonesome death on June 21, by the account of C.J. Chanco, going largely unaided
and unattended despite suffering an apparent heart attack or stroke in front of many passersby right
outside a university. This, from what InterAksyon .com chief photographer Bernard Testa could piece
together from interviews with police , neighbors, relatives, security guards, and witnesses, is how Reynaldo
Carcillar's final hours unfolded .At around five in the afternoon of Friday, June 21, 2013, 51-year-old
Reynaldo Carcillar arrived at the Pasay City shanty where he lived to have merienda with his wife , 39-
year-old Carmencita , and their two children , three-year-old John , and one-year-old Reiner James.It was
his last meal with his family. [See: Pedicab driver dies in front of pedestrians]In a few hours, while
transporting a passenger on his pedicab - which he christened "John and Denver" - Carcillar would suffer
either a heart attack or a stroke .In 2009, Carmencita said Reynaldo had his first heart attack . He almost
died in his sleep. That night four years ago, he was pale and cold and apparently clinically dead for half
an hour, she told InterAksyon .com.Without proper training in CPR , however, she instinctively and
desperately pumped her husband's chest until he regained consciousness.Carcillar was not to be so lucky the
second time around .
"Wala po siyang sinasabi na may sakit siya sa puso. Nag meryenda po siya ng 5 o'clock kasama ng asawa
niya at mga anak . Nagbibiruan pa muna kami dito bago siya umalis," Jennifer Liro, wife of Carcillar's
nephew, Melchor, recounted , after the pedicab driver left that afternoon . "May sinakay siyang pasahero
papuntang San Andres o Estrada. OK pa daw siya noon . Nang sa may tapat ng La Salle , may isang
estudyante na nakapansin , akala lang lasing lang po. Tapos may guard na nakakakita na nahihirapan na
siya, so tinulungan siya."
(He didn't mention anything about his heart condition . He had merienda with his family. We were even
joking around before he left. He took a passenger who was going to either San Andres or Estrada. He seemed
alright at that time . But when he arrived in front of La Salle , a student noticed that he was slumped on
his pedicab and thought that he was just drunk . Then a security guard saw him and helped him.)
Carcillar lay on a sidewalk right across the south gate of the De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila for
some time before help arrived .
"May tumawag sa akin dito, hindi namin kilala," Melchor Liro, the husband of Jennifer and Carcillar's
nephew, told InterAksyon .com. "Si Tito Naldo daw inatake . Punta kami dun sa Estrada. Nakahiga si Tito
Naldo sa may gutter ng island ."
(A stranger went to our place and told us that Uncle Naldo suffered from a heart attack . So we went to
Estrada [a street right by DLSU]. He was lying right by a gutter.)
Liro continued: "Pumapara ako ng taxi , walang pumapara, may hawak nga akong kadena para pumara
lang, yung ibang tricycle ayaw ding magsakay, buti nalang si Agot nakuha ko."
(I was trying to hail a taxicab but none stopped . I even had a chain which I used to get a cab. Some of the
tricycles also refused us. Good thing we were helped by Agot Perez, a tanod at Barangay 729.)
It was around seven o' clock in the evening, Liro said , adding he was in a hurry to get a cab because he
could still feel his uncle's pulse .
"Isang guardiya lang ang umaasikaso sa kanya ng abutan ko," Liro said .
For his part, Barangay Tanod Perez said: "Nung tinawag niya po ako, nakita ko na nakabulagta si Naldo,
walang magsakay na taxi , kaya ako na po ang nagtakbo sa Ospital ng Maynila. May dumaang pulis Pasay
na mobile pero hindi sinakay."
(When Melchor called me , I saw Carcillar already lying on the sidewalk . Taxicabs refused to take him.
That's why I took it upon myself to bring him to the Ospital ng Maynila. A Pasay City police car passed by
but didn't offer us a ride .)
Perez said he was surprised when Carcillar's wife arrived at the hospital .
"Iniwanan ko na po sila doon , may mga sumigaw na ibang pedicab driver na 'pangalawang stroke na niya
yan ,'" Perez said . "Sa pakiwari ko dahil mainit noong umaga at tanghali tapos umulan ng hapon at gabi
kaya na stroke siya."
(I left both of them there . I also heard some pedicab drivers shout that it was already his second stroke . I
guess the heat in the morning and afternoon , then the rains in the evening, must have triggered it.)
When he was brought to the Ospital ng Maynila, "wala na daw pong pulso, patay na daw po," Carmencita
told InterAksyon .com.
InterAksyon .com looked for - but failed - to reach the DLSU security guard who helped Carcillar. However,
another security guard witnessed the incident.
"I was inside the Henry Sy building of the De La Salle University along Taft Avenue , when I heard the
radio alert about the motionless man on the pavement in front of the north gate of the university," said the
guard , who requested anonymity. He and "several of my colleagues tried to help and give CPR because we
have Red Cross training," the guard added in Filipino. But it was too late .

In Emperorland , thousands of emperor penguins are suffering from a shortage of fish to eat. Despite the lean
times, they continue to embark upon their main mission in life: to find their mate by singing their
individual "heartsong," which expresses their soul . One much-wooed female , Norma Jean , wanders alone
until she meets Memphis, the only male whose song inspires her. They, like every other emperor couple , soon
produce an egg, after which each father cradles his egg between his legs to incubate it over the long,
brutally cold winter, while the mothers leave for the open sea to hunt for fish . Throughout the winter, the
males huddle in a large mass, taking turns braving the outer rim and then moving inside the group for
warmth . Directed by their venerated leader, Noah , they sing to make their task more palatable and invoke
their spirit guides. Memphis, lovesick , envisions Norma Jean and sings passionately, causing him
momentarily to lose hold of his egg, which rolls into the freezing snow. Horrified , he snatches it back up
and returns to the group. When summer finally returns, the eggs begin to hatch . Memphis has almost given
up hope for his still , silent egg when it cracks and two feet emerge . The baby, christened "Mumble" by
another new baby, Gloria, soon breaks free of his shell and tap-dances with happiness, causing the other
penguins and his father to squirm in discomfort. Soon , the females return , and although Memphis is
embarrassed by Mumble's constantly shuffling feet, Norma Jean adores her son without reserve . All of the
children attend school led by Miss Viola, who teaches them that without their heartsongs, they cannot be
truly penguin . Mumble is entranced with Gloria, who already evidences a lovely singing voice , but when
he is called on , his singing is a painful screech . Viola meets with Norma Jean and Memphis, who lies that
Mumble's incubation was entirely normal , and Mumble is brought to the special education teacher, Mrs.
Astrakhan . She counsels him to summon up his deepest emotions, but when Mumble eagerly tries, his feet
unwittingly start tapping, and upon hearing his voice later, Mrs. Astrakhan weeps with despair. Norma
Jean pronounces Mumble's dancing cute , but Memphis takes his cues from the other penguins and declares
that "it ain't penguin ." Over the weeks, Mumble finds isolated areas to dance unobserved , and one day, is
set upon by four predatory skua birds. As their boss pins him down , Mumble , hoping to "appeal to his
better nature ," inquires about the identification tag on his ankle , prompting the skua to wax eloquently on
the "aliens," actually humans, who abducted him. When the bird then returns to the task at hand , Mumble
flees, eluding his captors by hiding in an ice crevice . Each day at school , he stands silently at the back of
the class, and when their education is finished , Noah does not allow Mumble to graduate . Regardless, Norma
Jean urges her son to join his peers in their celebration , and he follows them out to their party by the sea .
Spotting a few fish nearby, the penguins compete to grab one , and when Mumble succeeds, he gives it to
Gloria. When she refuses it, however, a bird snatches the fish from Mumble's mouth , lifting him into the sky
and dropping him to the ground with half of the fish intact in his mouth . Gloria, embarrassed , thanks
him. That night, Gloria leads the adolescents in a rousing song, but when Mumble sings along, the whole
pack complains and demands that he leave . He sleeps alone on an ice floe , waking when a monstrous
leopard seal attacks. After a harrowing chase , Mumble escapes by jumping onto the shore , and finds there
five Adelie penguins, a smaller, beach-dwelling species. The rambunctious males, whom Mumble dubs the
"Amigos," join Mumble in taunting the seal , then admire Mumble's masterly footwork . They invite him back
to their colony, where tens of thousands of Adelie males are building nests of pebbles to attract a mate . The
Amigos explain that their superior charisma lures the ladies even without a nest, and to prove their claim,
they dance Mumble's steps for three females, who respond favorably. Together, the new friends slide on their
bellies down steep mountainsides, impressing one another with their daring and finesse . At the tip of the
mountain , however, their shenanigans start a mini-avalanche , revealing a huge tractor. Mumble watches
with horrified fascination as it sinks into the sea, then calls to the Amigos to help him discern its mysteries.
Although the carefree Adelies care little about the tractor, they bring him to their guru, a womanizing
charlatan Rockhopper penguin named Lovelace . Lovelace wears a plastic ring from a six-pack that wedged
around his neck while swimming one day, which he claims is a "sacred talisman" that allows him to confer
with the spirits. After waiting with other worshipful penguins, Mumble asks the mystic
if the spirits resemble the aliens of which the boss skua spoke , prompting Lovelace to declare his question-
answering over. The Adelies ask Mumble about his soul mate , and when they learn that he cannot sing,
hatch a plan to hide behind him while he lip-synchs. When Mumble tries to impress Gloria in this way,
however, she quickly uncovers the ruse and chastises him. In desperation , Mumble launches into his most
fervent dancing, and Gloria , who has been searching in vain for a mate to complement her forlorn
heartsong, is swept away by the beat. Suddenly, her song's true nature is revealed: a jubilant disco
celebration . The other young penguins joyfully echo Mumble's dance steps, earning the censure of the elders.
Noah demands that they stop, cautioning the colony that the food shortage has been caused by just such
"pagan" influences, and that only through strict adherence to rules will the fish return . Although Mumble
tries to educate his clan about the "aliens," the true cause of the shortage , they scoff at him. Mumble ,
unwilling to deny his true self, refuses to stop dancing, and is banished . Knowing the only way back to his
family is by discovering the truth about the aliens, Mumble resolves to find them, and visits Lovelace to ask
for advice . He and the Amigos find the guru laboring for breath , as the plastic ring has tightened around
his neck . Realizing that the ring was not a gift from the gods, Mumble presses Lovelace to lead him to where
he found it. To that end , the seven penguins set out across the frozen tundra, and when Gloria follows,
determined to be with her true love , Mumble deliberately insults her so she will turn back and not be
condemned to life as an outcast. He is heartbroken , but soon must focus on the trek's arduousness. Mumble
helps the ailing Lovelace over a mountain , which descends to a herd of huge elephant seals. The vegetarian
creatures warn the group that miles away lay the humans, whom they deem the "annihilators." Unafraid ,
Mumble presses on , sure he can appeal to the humans' better natures. The winds turn torrential , and the
penguins struggle forward . Finally, they come upon an abandoned human fishery and spot several more
plastic rings floating by the shore . Killer whales attack , catching Lovelace by the ring and tossing him into
the air. The motion , however, manages to free him from the ring, and all seven penguins escape to an ice
floe , only to see it split apart by a mammoth fishing ship. The penguins scramble to safety, and the sight of
more ships inspires Mumble to dive headlong into the sea to confront them directly. Watched with
admiration by the others, he braves the dangerous tides, but is borne out to sea and , eventually, washed up
ashore in a city. There , he is caught and transported to a zoo, where penguins stand , stunned and
despondent, in a glass case with a false "Arctic" backdrop. For days, Mumble tries to talk to the human
spectators, but soon loses his voice , and three months later has nearly lost his mind . One day, his stupor is
interrupted by a child knocking on the glass rhythmically. In response , Mumble shuffles a few steps, and
soon the humans react with excited hysteria. Months later, Mumble returns to Emperorland , an electronic
tracking device embedded in his back , and informs the penguins that the humans are causing the food
shortage , but dancing charms them. When Noah orders the penguins to sing out against Mumble , the
younger set, spurred on by Gloria, instead begin to follow his dance steps. Norma Jean and the Amigos see
the commotion and welcome Mumble home , but reveal that Memphis, wracked with guilt for abandoning
his son , has lost his heartsong. Mumble appeals to his father to dance , and soon , Memphis revives. Just
then , two helicopters land on a rise nearby and humans emerge . Mumble leads his frightened brethren in a
line dance , and soon , the delighted humans join in . Within days, footage of the miraculous birds has
dispersed throughout the human world , and committees have formed to protect their environment. As the
fish begin to replenish , Emperorland is alive with dancing penguins, chief among them Mumble and his
bride , Gloria.
Lord Voldemort, an evil and powerful dark wizard , has just been defeated . When he tried to kill a
one-year-old boy, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), the killing curse rebounded upon him, destroying his
body. Harry is left an orphan with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead , Voldemort having killed his
parents, Lily (Geraldine Somerville) and James (Adrian Rawlins) Potter. Professors Dumbledore (Richard
Harris) and McGonagall (Dame Maggie Smith) and Gamekeeper Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) leave him on the
doorstep of his ultra-conventional , insensitive , negligent Muggle (non-magical) relatives, the Dursley
family, who take him in . Harry's relatives decide to conceal his magical heritage from him and make him
live in a cupboard under the stairs for ten years.
Shortly before Harry's eleventh birthday, he receives a letter addressed specifically to him. His
outraged uncle , however, reads and burns it before Harry has a chance to look at the contents. The sender
does not give up, and the Dursleys receive successively larger numbers of the same correspondence . Soon , his
Uncle Vernon (Richard Griffiths) becomes so paranoid that the Dursleys, with Harry in tow, hide in a hut
on a small island to escape . That night (which happens to be before Harry's birthday), he is visited by an
enormous man named Hagrid who bursts through the locked door of the hut. With Hagrid holding the
Dursleys at bay, Harry finally reads his letter, in which he learns he has been invited to study magic at
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The next day Harry and Hagrid head to Diagon Alley in
London (the secret magical location hidden behind the famous wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron). Harry
enters the wizarding world for the first time , learns to his surprise that he is famous, and meets the new
Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrell (Ian Hart). Hagrid takes Harry to
Gringott's Bank , where Harry learns that he is quite wealthy. Following this, Hagrid stops at a different
vault to retrieve a small , wrapped parcel for Dumbledore . Using his newfound money, Harry buys
everything he requires for his first school year, including and owl , and a wand . Interestingly, the wand
that chooses him is the brother wand of the one that was used to kill Harry's parents and give him the scar.
He then takes the train to Hogwarts from Platform Nine and three-quarters, befriending Ron Weasley
(Rupert Grint), and meeting Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), a Muggle-born witch .
Upon arrival , the Sorting Hat places Harry, Ron and Hermione in Gryffindor House . Draco
Malfoy (Tom Felton), an arrogant and elitist student, gets placed in Slytherin . At the end of their first week
at Hogwarts, Harry and Ron discover that Gringotts, the wizarding bank , was broken into and a vault that
Harry and Hagrid visited had been the subject of the robbery. Later, Harry discovers he has a talent for
riding broomsticks, and after an incident with Malfoy, is recruited to join Gryffindor's Quidditch team as a
Seeker, much to Malfoy's displeasure .
Harry, Ron , Hermione explore Hogwarts late at night and accidentally stumble across the door to
a corridor. A three-headed dog, christened Fluffy by Hagrid , guards a trapdoor. On Halloween , Quirrell
informs everyone that a troll has entered the castle; Harry and Ron fight the troll to save Hermione , who is
trapped in the girls' bathroom, and the three become best friends.
At Harry's first Quidditch match , Harry's broom becomes possessed , nearly knocking him off.
Hermione sees Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), the sinister Potions master and head of Slytherin
House , staring at Harry and mouthing words, making her believe that Snape has caused the broom to
misbehave with a dark curse . Hoping to save Harry, Hermione sets Snape's robes on fire , distracting him
and others and allowing Harry to survive .
At Christmas, Harry receives an Invisibility Cloak , once belonging to his father, which renders its
wearer invisible . Harry uses it to explore the Restricted Section in the library to research information on
Nicolas Flamel , a name Hagrid lets slip when confronted about his knowledge of Fluffy. Eventually, Harry
learns that "Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone , which produces the Elixir of
Life which will make the drinker immortal ."
Harry sees Snape trying to get information from Quirrell about getting past Fluffy; Quirrell says he
does not know what he's talking about. Harry, Ron , and Hermione are sure that Snape is trying to steal the
Philosopher's Stone in order to restore Lord Voldemort to power, but Hagrid denies it. While at Hagrid's hut,
the trio discover a dragon egg Hagrid was nursing in a fire . Later the egg hatches a Norwegian Ridgeback
dragon , and Hagrid decides to call him "Norbert". The friends are nervous for Hagrid , since dragon
breeding had long been outlawed in the wizarding world , and Hagrid had something of a reckless nature ,
who has long since nursed a strong desire for a dragon . Finally, Harry, Ron , and Hermione are able to
convince Hagrid to let Norbert go live with other dragons of his kind in Romania .
Harry, Hermione , Ron and Draco are caught out late at night, and are forced to serve detention
with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest. Harry sees a hooded figure drink the blood of an injured unicorn ,
which makes Harry's forehead scar start burning. Firenze , a centaur, tells Harry that it is a monstrous thing
to slay a unicorn , let alone drink its blood . He also tells Harry that unicorn blood will keep one alive , and
that the hooded figure is in fact Voldemort.
Harry, Hermione and Ron find out that Hagrid has told a hooded stranger how to get past Fluffy,
and they believe the theft of the Stone is imminent. Rushing to finally confide in Professor Dumbledore
their news, they meet Professor McGonagall , who is shocked to find out how much they knew about the
Stone , but reassures them all the same that it is safe in the castle . She also tells them that Dumbledore has
been sent away on an important mission by the Ministry of Magic. Positive that Dumbledore's summons was
a red herring to take Professor Dumbledore away from Hogwarts, the trio make plans to thwart Snape's theft
of the stone . They set out to reach the stone first, navigating the security system set up by the school's staff,
which is a series of complex magical challenges. The three make it through together until finally, Harry
must enter the inner chamber alone . There he finds that Professor Quirrell , not Snape , is attempting to
steal the Stone . Realizing that Snape was trying to protect him from harm all along, Harry confronts
Quirrell and survives a second encounter with Lord Voldemort, who has possessed Quirrell and appears as a
ghastly face on the back of Quirrell's head . Quirrell crumbles when he touches Harry's skin , and Harry
passes out because of his close proximity to Lord Voldemort. Voldemort then pitilessly abandons Quirrell ,
who dies in the aftermath of his possession .
Harry wakes up in the hospital wing. Dumbledore reveals to Harry that Harry's mother died to protect
Harry as an infant. Her pure , loving sacrifice provides Harry with an ancient magical protection from
Voldemort's lethal spells and also prevents Voldemort from touching Harry without suffering terribly.
Dumbledore also says that the Sorcerer's Stone has been destroyed to prevent future attempts by Voldemort to
steal it.
Finally, at the end-of-year feast, the House Points totals are given: Gryffindor is in last place .
However, Dumbledore gives a few "last-minute additions", granting points to Harry, Ron , Hermione and
Neville for their bravery and service towards school , so that Gryffindor wins the House Cup.
