Here are the guidelines for the term paper:

1. The source material for the term paper is at: https://www.newscientist.com/round-up/ethics-issue/.


The articles are paywalled (i.e. you need to subscribe to get the full article) but the preview gives
you enough information to start on.

2. Each group is assigned one of the following questions (posed as moral dilemmas in science):
a. Should we give other animals rights?
b. Should we edit our children’s genomes?
c. Should we make everyone normal?
d. Should we abandon privacy online?
e. Should we give robots the right to kill?
f. Should we let synthetic life forms loose?
g. Should we geo-engineer the planet?
h. Should we impose population controls?
i. Should we colonize other planets?
j. Should we stop doing science?

3. The parts of the tern paper are as follows:


a. Introduction: What is it about?
b. The Science and Technology Behind the Question
c. Issues and Concerns that Surround the Question
d. Impacts on Society: How the answer/s shape our future

4. Groups are given the privilege to choose how they will go about finding the appropriate information.
All reference information must be saved for citation purposes.

5. A date will be set for the assembly and writing of the paper. Please make sure that all necessary
resources are available during that time.

6. Papers must properly cite sources using the APA format. You can find a guide to the APA format
here: http://www.citethisforme.com/us/citation-generator/apa .

7. Papers are to be submitted in electronic format on short-size bond paper, normal margins, using
Times New Roman font size 12. Ideally, the paper must not be longer than ten (10) pages.

8. The scoring guide for the paper is as follows:

Format and Language 15 pts. The submission follows the required format for
organization and citation or sources; rules on language
and grammar are generally observed
Content 50 pts. The submission discusses the topic with depth and
substance and is able to provide a comprehensive
summary of all possible point of views
Organization 20 pts. The submission is well-organized and written in an
engaging manner; where appropriate, figures and other
forms of graphical information are provided
Resources 5 pts. The submission cites more than seven (7) sources of
appropriate or related information
