Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For students that have cognitive difficulties BrainPop is a great tool because it allows students to watch
tutorials on what is being taught in the classroom. These students can also take quizzes and assessments to
test how well they know the information. This program is also great for English language learners because
BrainPop does come in numerous languages. Also if students struggle with the topic we are discussing they
can go home and watch BrainPop to refresh their memory. It is also awesome for students that excel in the
class and want to focus on something they are interested in. This software is a fun and easy way to get
students engaged and excited about the topic they are going to learn.

Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPop video will be used to introduce the topic of tenses and the use of verbs to convey a sense of
past, present, and future. This lesson should take a few hours for two days. The teacher will lead a discussion
on tenses at the end of the day to see what students already know about the topic. For homework, the
teacher will assign students to watch the BrainPop video. On the next day of class the teacher will play the
BrainPop video one more time for the class in case a child was unable to watch it and to refresh their
memory. As a class, we will have one more group discussion on the topic to answer any questions or
concerns.
The teacher will then give each student the option to either play a sorting game online where you are given
pictures that identify with either past, present, or future and have to put each picture in the correct group. Or
students that may need extra help can work in a group with the teacher where they are given the same thing
but instead of online we will use Velcro and the white board. Students that excel can draw a picture and write
a sentence about either the past, present, or future on a software on the iPad. Students that choose online
will be able to assess themselves. Students that work with the teacher will be able to be assessed right away.
The students that chose to draw a picture, and write will be assessed after they turn their pictures in via the
iPads. The next day in class we will do the same thing but mix the groups up a bit based on how well the
student did the day prior. This lesson is perfect for different types of learners because they are given a choice
on how to learn. I will conclude the lesson by reading a book on tenses, and having each student type a story
about what they know on past, present, and past. After they have typed their story they can printed it and
glue it onto pages and created a book. I then will take pictures of the books and pages and post them so each
student can read their peers stories. I will provide students with feedback on their story. Students that
struggle I will meet with one on one or in a small group and go over the concept on more time.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson plan I feel the activities I created will be fun, interactive, and
engaging for the students. They are able to have freedom on how they choose to learn. Extending this lesson,
I could have published the students work around the room or had them come up with real world examples of
past, present, and future, to get a better understanding.
