1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1.1. GENERAL

Comply with the National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015 ed., National Building
Code of the Philippines, American Concrete Institute 318M-14 and other Standards referenced
in this specification.

2. SITE PREPARATION
2.1. GENERAL
Standards
Earthworks: NSCP 2015 Section 302
2.2. DEMOLITION
2.2.1. Commencement Inspection
Give sufficient notice so that inspection may be made for walls and other adjoining
structures to be demolished. Provide photographs of structures to be demolished for future
reference.
2.2.2. Demolished Salvaged Materials
Except for materials to recovered, take possession of the demolished materials and remove
them from the site.
2.2.3. Support
Provide temporary support for the existing steel columns which are to be altered and which
rely for support on work to be removed.
2.2.4. Weather Protection
If excavation zone is exposed to weather, provide temporary covers to prevent water
penetration and flooding.
2.3. CONTROL AND PROTECTION
2.3.1. Erosion Control
Avoid erosion and sedimentation of the excavation zone.
2.3.2. Dewatering
Keep earthworks free of excess water. Provide and maintain slopes, drains, excavations
and embankments to ensure free drainage. Place fill and concrete to areas which are free
from surface water.
2.4. SITE CLEARING
2.4.1. Extent
Limit clearing to areas of cut and fill and areas to be occupied by works.
2.4.2. Clearing Operations
Remove everything on or above the excavation zone, including rubbish, organic debris,
grass, boulders and rubble.
2.5. EXCAVATION
2.5.1. Extent
Excavate for concrete jacket to the required dimension and depths prior to plan.
2.5.2. Excavation Clearance
Provide a clear space on the sides of concrete jacket of a minimum clearance of 500 mm.
2.5.3. Existing Services
Refer to existing plan to identify location of underground utility services pipes before
excavation.
2.5.4. Shoring
Provide enough shoring support for excavated trenches surrounding the isolated column.
2.5.5. Grading
Grade the external ground surface of a minimum of 1:100 to drain surface water away from
trenches.
3. CONCRETE WORKS
3.1. GENERAL
Standards
Structural Design: ACI 318M-14
Fine and Coarse Aggregate: ASTM C33 Specifications
Portland Cement: ASTM C150M
Water: ASTM C1602M
Steel Bars: ASTM A615M
Reinforcement Detailing: ACI 318M-14
3.2. SURFACE PREPARATION OF EXISTING STEEL COLUMN AND PEDESTAL
Any foreign materials such as oils, grease waxes, curing compounds, salt and other
contaminants must be effectively removed.
Sand rust on steel column if there is any.
Roughen existing concrete surface by means of chipping gun.
Cut off overhanging baseplate on the existing pedestal.
3.3. REINFORCEMENT
3.3.1. General
Fabricate main vertical bars provided with bends and proper cutting length based on the
plan.
Fabricate lateral ties/cross ties provided with proper hook and cutting length based on the
plan. Adjustments on cutting length shall be verified once the vertical main bars are
installed especially on the diagonally bent bars and tapered jacket.
Supply reinforcement with proper grade and sizes.
3.3.2. Steel Grade
The grade of steel bar to be used is Grade 60 or Grade 415 MPa.
3.3.3. Concrete Cover
Provide concrete cover based on the drawings. If not indicated, use the following minimum
concrete cover:
Column Jacket: 50 mm
Concrete surface exposed to ground: 75 mm
Tapered Concrete Jacket: 40 mm
3.3.4. Hooks
Provide hook length for ties based on the drawings. If not indicated, use the following
standard hooks:
90° Hook: 4 x diameter of tie
135° Hook: 6 x diameter of tie
180° Hook: 12 x diameter of tie
3.3.5. Development Length
Provide development length as provided on the drawings. If not indicated, use the following
length based on bar diameter:
10 mm ø steel bar: 170 mm
12 mm ø steel bar: 220 mm
16 mm ø steel bar: 270 mm
20 mm ø steel bar: 380 mm
3.4. INSTALLATION OF RETROFITTING PLATES ON STEEL COLUMN
Cut and weld 2” THK A36 Steel Plate to be fitted in between lateral ties and cross ties.
Refer to drawing for the placement of plates.
3.5. INSTALLATION OF FORMWORKS
Provide enough formworks using ¾ “ Marine Plywood for side planks supported with 2”x4”
Kiln Dried Lumber for the concrete jacket. Forms must be supported by shuttering made
with timber or steel pipe supports.
Installation shall be conforming to NSCP 2015 Section 426.11
3.6. CONCRETING
3.6.1. Grade of Concrete
Concrete mix to be used is design mix with compressive strength of 35 MPa or 5075 psi.
3.6.2. Placing of Concrete
Before and during concrete placement, formwork and reinforcement must be at a
temperature not greater than 32°C. Spray with cold water or other effective means.
Pouring of concrete must not exceed a height of 1 meter to avoid segregation of
aggregates.
3.6.3. Compaction
Vibrate concrete while pouring to remove entrapped air. Avoid over-vibrating to avoid
segregation.
3.6.4. Curing
Protect concrete from premature drying due to excessive hot, cold and windy conditions.
Cure concrete jacket for a minimum of 7 days.
3.6.5. Stripping Times
Remove formwork after the concrete jacket has been cured. Refer to date of concreting per
column-column to avoid premature removal of forms.
3.6.6. Finishing of Unformed Surfaces
Use steel hand trowels to produce the final finish free from trowel marks with uniform
texture and appearance.
4. BACKFILLING
After the final finish has harden, provide filling materials free from organic matter imported
on to the site from an approved source unless the fill type can be provided from the
excavated trenches.
4.1. Selection of Fill
Naturally occurring material, crushed or quarried stone, crushed gravel, or mixture of
crushed material with lumps of clay and free from organic materials.
4.2. Placement of Fill
Place fill by horizontal layers of uniform thickness no greater than 200 mm and to be
compacted before addition of next layer of fill.
