Democracy vs dictatorship

Abstract:
Democracy and dictatorship play an important role in leading any country. In a
democracy, the leader selects through votes. Democracy and dictatorship both have
their advantages and disadvantages. But in dictatorship country controlled by only one
person and a group like Musharraf. There are many forms of democracy that lead the
country it’s upon the government or leader which leader choose. Democracy based on
fair election after every five years in Pakistan. Democracy has some drawbacks also
Democracy leads to corruption for it is based on electoral competition and very much
expense on elections.in Pakistan first democratic party was Pakistan people’s party and
won its first election through votes. But in dictatorship leader not selected through votes
and parliament not pass any law for army chief. It is only controlled by one leader like
China and Saudi Arabia. And dictator does what he wants no rule for dictator not
accountable to anyone. He does what he wants. In Pakistan, there is a democracy but
only in name. But actually, Pakistan is ruled by the establishment which is the army.
And also Imran Khan won this election with the help of the army, not through votes. In
my opinion, democracy is better than dictatorship. Because in a democracy give right to
leader select by people through votes and people of the country select the right leader
for the betterment for its country. But in dictatorship citizen have not any right for the
selection of their leader.

The word democracy is derived from the Greek word
Demos- People
Kratos- Power or rule
• Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are
Elected by the people.
• A dictatorship consists of rule by one person or a group of
People.

Democracy:
• Democracy means to elect the leader by the people through votes.
• Abraham Lincoln: Democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the
People.

What is dictatorship?
A government controlled by one person, or a small group of people. The dictator(s) may
also take away much of its peoples ‘freedom.
Dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by
law, constitution, or other social and political factors within the state.

PERIODS OF DICTATORSHIP IN PAKISTAN:

• General Ayub Khan from 1958 to 1969.(best in my opinion)
• General Muhammad Yahiya Khan from 1969 to 1971.
• General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq from 1977 to 1988.
• General Pervez Musharraf from 1999 to 2008.

FORMS OF DEMOCRACY:

Representative - involves the selection of government officials by

The people being represented.
• Parliamentary - the party with the greatest representation in the
Parliament forms the government, its leader becoming prime minister or
Chancellor.
• Presidential - a system where the public elects the president
Through free and fair elections.
• Semi-presidential - the government includes both a prime minister
And a president.
• Constitutional - the authority of the majority is limited by legal and
Institutional means so that the rights of individuals and minorities are
Respected.
 FEATURES OF DEMOCRACY:
In a democracy the final decision making power must rest with those who elected by the
people. • A democracy must be based on a free and fair election where those currently
in power have a fair chance of losing. • In a democracy, each adult citizen must have
one vote and each vote must have one value. • A democratic government rules within
limits sets by constitutional law and citizen’s right.

MERITS OF DEMOCRACY:
A democratic government is a better government because it is
A more accountable form of government.
• Democracy improves the quality of decision making.
• In a democracy no one is a permanent winner or loser.
• Democracy is better than other forms of government because it
Allows us to correct its own mistakes.

DRAWBACKS OF DEMOCRACY:
Leaders keep changing in a democracy. This leads to
Instability.
• Democracy is all about political competition and power
Play. There is no scope for morality.
• Elected leaders do not know the best interest of the
People. It leads to bad decisions.
• Democracy leads to corruption for it is based on electoral
Competition.

DEMOCRACY IN PAKISTAN:
“Democracy is necessary to peace and to undermining the forces of terrorism.”
(Benazir Bhutto).

HISTORY OF DEMOCRACY IN PAKISTAN:

The first rule of democracy is to elect the Leader of people’s choice
Through transparent elections, but in Pakistan condition is quite
Different.
• In Pakistan people elect one leader but there come another leader
• First Democratic Rule (1988-1990): Pakistan People’s Party won
• Second Democratic Rule (1990-1993): PML (N) Won
• Third Democratic Rule (1993-1996): Pakistan People’s Party
• Fourth Democratic Rule (1997-1999): PML (N) Won.
 (2008-2013): Pakistan People’s Party Won.
 (2013-2018): PML (N) Won.
 (2018-2019): PTI Imran khan (won).

DISTINGUISH BETWEEN DEMOCRATIC AND

NON DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT:

1: In democratic Gov. people elect their
rulers and have right in decision making.
2: The parliament is a separate body and
has no interference of army.
3: Democracy is based on consultation.
4: Govt people enjoy their right of

no right in decision making.
The parliament cannot pass a law about
the army chief.
Non democratic govt is based on
dictatorship.
The ruler does what he wishes.
Non-democratic government elections are
either not held.
 WHY DEMOCRACY FLOPS IN PAKISTAN:
• Army interference.
• Corruption.
• Royal style of politicians.
• Abuse of powers.
• Lack of accountability.

Conclusion:
As a student I believe that only educated people can
Bring a positive change.
• Lets promise to ourselves that we will not tolerate any
Kind of Injustice.
• Democracy is the back bone for a country.
 And our government in Pakistan must base on Islamic principles.
