List of Khitan Small Characters in Kane 2009

The table below is a transcription of the Index of Graphs given on pages 301–305 of Daniel
Kane's The Kitan Language and Script (Brill, 2009) [images of pages 300–301, 302–303, and 304–305]. This
page is a mirror of this page, but uses WOFF fonts instead of glyph images.

Notes

 The glyphs are from an experimental font created by myself, and try to follow the basic shape
of the glyphs given in Kane's book, but due to the constraints of the font's inherent style they
may differ to a greater of lesser extent. The exact glyph form is open for debate in many cases.
The font used to generate the glyph images used on this page is available for download
from here.
 In the third column, italic text represents a phonetic reconstruction, and monospaced capital
text indicates the character's meaning.
 You are advised to install the Charis SIL font if you want to be sure of having the phonetic
reconstructions display correctly.
 Some logographic characters occur in dotted and non-dotted forms, which Kane considers to
be masculine and feminine/neuter forms respectively. In these cases the definition of the
masculine (dotted) character is marked with a male sign (♂).
 A question mark above a vowel (e.g. ẻ) indicates that the reconstructed vowel is uncertain (the
"question mark" is actually U+0309 Combining Hook Above).
 The table lists all distinct glyph forms that occur in Small Khitan inscriptions, but it does not
directly distinguish between logographic characters that occur in isolation and phonetic
elements that combine in blocks of two seven characters to represent the pronunciation of a
word.
 Many of the characters in the table are glyph variants of other characters in the table, and
would probably be unified in a Unicode encoding of the Small Khitan script
