PICE-HAUSC and HAU-CE Department launch its First

TransCEnd National Quiz Bee
by Kimberly D. Macuto

January 24, 2019 is historical to the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers –

Holy Angel University Student Chapter (PICE-HAUSC) and to the Civil Engineering
Department of the university.
It was on this date that TransCEnd National Civil Engineering Quiz Bee was introduced nationwide.
Esplana Engineering Review Center (EERC), one of the prominent review centers for aspiring civil
engineers, graced the event by being a co-presenter.

With the formation of the Holy Angel University – College of Engineering back in July 23, 1963,
the Civil Engineering Department (now from the newly articulated School of Engineering and Architecture)
was established two years after the initial offering of its general engineering course. The program was
given Government Recognition immediately after the graduates of its pioneering batch had achieved
100% passing in the Civil Engineering Board Licensure Examinations. This initial success of the department
has led to the offering of other engineering degree programs by the university.

The said contest aims to promote scholastic excellence and competence through healthy and fair
competition, and at the same time, provide an opportunity for interaction and fellowship among students
and faculties from other schools.

With its commencing theme “To Rise Above, To Go Beyond”, Kimberly Macuto, the Vice President
for Academic Affairs, explained that TransCEnd is the challenge of the organization (PICE-HAUSC) to all
civil engineering students to explore their capabilities and to bridge their life, more than the life they have
in their own school, to their fellow future engineers.

According to her, TransCEnd, just like one of the many competitions, stresses the importance of
lifting one another.

Engr. Bryan Dale Yu, the adviser of PICE-HAUSC for the School Year 2018-2019 and one of the
three who planned the TransCEnd few years ago, shared that since Holy Angel University is one of the
largest and best universities in the Central Region of the Philippines, they (with Engr. Ronwell G. De Leon
and Engr. Paulo T. De Jesus) had an idea to produce a quiz show that has its own flavor and concept. This
was made to introduce the Civil Engineering Department in Holy Angel University to other schools, that
we too are competent and practice excellence in the field of civil engineering.

The pioneering batch of participating schools of TransCEnd are Far Eastern University – Institute
of Technology (FEU-Tech), Universal College – Paranaque City, Technological Institute of the Philippines –
Manila (TIP – Manila), Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU), Technological
University of the Philippines – Manila (TUP-Manila), Saint Louis College (SLC), Angeles University
Foundation (AUF), University of the East – Caloocan and Panpacific University. Each school can send a
maximum of three teams with two members each.

John Chino A. Tan and Ralph Renzo M. Llagas of TIP – Manila were hailed as the Champion,
followed by Daniel James A. Molina and Ivy Hanna E. Sabado of SLC, Anuedo P. Cajigas III Angelito N.
Mangalili of TUP – MANILA, and John Julius T. Santos and Vonbert A. Mole of FEU placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd
runner-up, respectively.

Engr. Charles Oliquino from EERC, Engr. Kimuel Suyat and Engr. Adrian Neil Pineda served as the
panelists during the event.

With Transcend being hosted by the organization of HAU, Engr. Yu sees the impact specifically on
the Civil Engineering students of the university as it will make them proud that the school hosts a
prestigious Quiz Show.

As the school year is about to end, Engr. Yu stated that the sustainability of TransCEnd in the long
run of PICE-HAUSC will rely on the forthcoming officers that represent every Civil Engineering student in
HAU. Also, improving the said event yearly and accepting the criticism coming from the participants from
other schools which assure the improvement of the TransCEnd.

“It is not my brainchild alone but it is the child of everyone that gave their time and effort for this
event. In behalf of the organizers of TransCEnd, we are very grateful to have this event became successful
and we look forward for the upcoming TransCEnd event in the following years,” Engr. Yu uttered a thank
you message to everyone who made the 1st TransCEnd possible.

The organizers of TransCEnd hope that the experiences and learning acquired through this event
will contribute to the consciousness of future Civil Engineers as regards to valuing intellectual integrity
and upholding the Civil Engineering Profession to its highest standards.
