Good evening ladies and gentlements,

My name is Linh and today I’m going to spend 5 minutes to talk about a problem that society is facing,
which is called “ PLASTIC PLANET”

This topic will have 3 sections: - The use of plastic

- Environmental effect

- Solutions

First of all, let’s start with the use of plastic in our daily lives.

- Whenever you walk down the street, you can easily find people using things made from plastic. For
example: plastic straw, plastic bag, plastic cup, and so on. It has become so common that we actually
have plastic equipment in our houses everyday. To explain for this problem, I strongly believe that the
main reason is because plastic is a cheap material and it costs less money to produce.

- However, everything has its pros and cons. Plastic is hardy disintegrate and people don’t pay much
attention to the way that plastic waste is disposed.

As a result, I think we should discuss about the environmental effect.

- As I said before, plastic can’t disintegrate so people just bury it under the ground and it will release
chemicals that affect our underground water. Another fact is that burning plastic can produce toxic and
pollute the air. Furthermore, when we throw plastic items into the ocean, we are killing water species.
Take a look at this picture: a whale died in Indonesia because of plastic waste in his stomach. Sadly, this
is not the first one died because of same reason. I don’t know if you can see this picture from my point
of view but what I see here is human and this might be us in a few decades if we don’t have any
solutions and take action immediately.

Now, shall we move to Solutions ?

People usually think that they can not change the world. It is true, but we can help to do it by changing
our habits. I will suggest some simple solutions that everyone can do:

- Firstly, using Eco Friendly products. Today, people start selling products that can be recycled and also
save for the Earth. Such as: wooden straw and spoon, paper bag, glass bottle… Ofcouse we can not
replace the use of plastic thoroughly, but atleast we can reduce it.

- Secondly, reusing plastic products. Let’s try to use plastic bottle or plastic bag as much as possible.
Plastic bottle can be used as a pot to grow some plants and plastic bag can be used many times. For
example, in my house, my mom usually get lots of plastic bags when she buys food at the market, then
she collects it all and gives it back to the seller so that they do not have to buy new one.

- Thirdly, do not throw plastic waste into the ocean because it’s the home of thousand species.

In conclusion, I hope that I can improve your environmental awareness and please don’t wait for
miracle, we have to take action right now if we don’t want to live on a garbage dump. So, plastic or
planet ? it’s up to you.
