Getting Started: API 580 API 580 Risk Based Inspection Certification
Certification Program for Advanced Knowledge of Risk Based Inspection

The objective of this certification program is to provide documented evidence of advanced knowledge and and expertise in the area of Risk-Based Inspection
(RBI) based on the information contained in API RP 580.

Education and Experience Requirements

If you hold a current API 510, 570 or 653 certification, you automatically qualify to take the API 580 Risk Based Inspection Certification exam.

If you do not hold a current API 510, 570 or 653 certification, then qualification is based on a combination of your level of education and industry experience
acquired within the last 10 years.

Minimum experience required is based on the applicants' level of education as described below:

Education Experience*
Engineering Degree 1 year experience in petrochemical industry
2-yr technical degree 2 years of experience in petrochemical industry
High School 3 years of experience in petrochemical industry
No formal education 5 years of experience in petrochemical industry
*The experience does NOT have to be related to inspection.

API 580 Inspector Examination

API 580 examination consist of 70 multiple choice questions


It is a 3.25 hour closed-book exam
No reference materials will be permitted at the examination
This examination has a set passing point of 70%, or 49 correctly answered questions

The examination will be based on the API Recommended Practice 580 – Risk-Based Inspection.

Note: Questions become effective when the applicable API documents (namely API RP 580 – any new issue, addenda or rewrite) have been in use for 12
months since issue date.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO API ICP EXAMS

Starting in January 2014, API will no longer be accepting paper applications. You must enroll in API's new online portal for application submission. API has
also changed the examination delivery method from paper-and-pencil to computer-based-testing (CBT).

Additionally, there will no longer be one global exam day, but a 10-day testing window. This means each applicant will have a choice of when or where they
want to test within the given window. Tests will be available at any of the Prometric computer testing centers around the world.

Exam Code Document and CASTI courses

All exam candidates will need the referenced Codes as they appear in the Body of Knowledge to study from and to complete CASTI's exam preparation course.
