Annotated Bibliography

In my essay I will be answering the question, “How has social media affected

students education?”. I want to know if social media is affecting education in a negative

or positive way. And if social media is distracting the student from educating themselves

to their full potential. Can social media be used to better students education? Or is

social media just another distraction?

In this interview, Dr. Jonathan B. Singer talked about how he uses Twitter in a

professional way. Him and some of his co-workers use the app to share ideas about work

related topics and also use the app to get to know one another. Dr. Singer is a teacher and he

has not yet used the app for classroom purposes, because he feels it would be too time

consuming for his students. Also Twitter could be a distraction if used in the classroom, if

students don’t use the app as intended.

The purpose of this interview was to show that social media can be used to network and

discuss certain topics. Social media can be used to share ideas and can be used as a very

good academic tool. The author of this written interview is Aaron Tooley. He has a PhD and he

interview Dr. Jonathan B. Singer who also has a PhD. I know this source is reliable, because Dr.

Singer is just giving his opinion on the use of social media. In no way is he making any claims

that social media is the best tool to use for educational purposes, but he is saying that it can be

done.

In my research paper I will use this information to show that social media can be used in

an educational way. Social media is not a distraction if it is used correctly. This interview

showed that social media is not good for a classroom setting, but is good for meeting new

people and discussing topics that you are unsure about.

This article shows that social media in your personal life and social media in an

educational or professional way are completely different. In business schools all over the world,

marketing majors are having to take a social media course. This will teach them how to use

social media in a professional way. Many companies advertise through social media, but some

do not know what is considered professional and what is considered unprofessional. Social

media can be looked at as something that is fun and can waste some time, but for big

companies it is a great way to get people to buy their products.

The purpose for writing this article was to show that social media can be used in a

professional way, and is being used in that way for a lot of businesses. The audience for this

piece was people who are wanting to see how companies use social media for advertising. This

source is credible, because many professors and big brands like Hermes were giving their input

for social media in the professional world. Also New York Times newspaper is a credible source,

because not just anyone can post on there.

I will be using this article in my research paper, because it shows how social media is

also used in the business world for marketing a product. In this way, social media is important

and not used as a distraction. Also, some companies pay people to post on a social media page

to advertise products, so this is an important job and it needs to be talked about.

This article shows how social media can help a student have more fun and a better

understanding of what is going on in the classroom. Wade talks about how teachers can use

Twitter and other social medias as assignments in the classroom. Many teachers have already

began to incorporate social media into educating their students, because if the students are

already on Twitter then they can get on it for an educational reason and it can benefit them.

The purpose of writing this essay was to inform parents that social media can be used as

a positive thing and not just a distraction. Lori Wade is the author of this essay. She is credible,

because she is a context writer who is well educated in the work of social media in classrooms.

The website is also credible because it is the Georgetown University website.

I will be using this article for my research paper, because it shows how if teachers work

to get social media in the classrooms it can benefit the students. They are now using Twitter so

a student can post on a discussion that the teacher assigned. I think this is a great way to get

students thinking and also a way that is more fun than regular homework is.

This article focused on how teachers and other educators are trying to use social media

to help make education more accessible for students. Also in this article, students gave their

input on how social media can help further their education. Although social media is not thought

of in this way, this article is showing how teachers are trying to make social media more

educational when it comes to using it in their classrooms.

The purpose of this article is to educate people on how social media can be a good thing

in the education relm. The audience for this article are students from all over the world. Joanne

Gikas and Michael M. Grant are the authors of this article, and they are both professors. This

makes them credible because they have their own classrooms that they have tested using

social media in. The article is a pdf., so since the authors are credible so is the article.

In this article, it shows that large institutions, like colleges, can use social media to

interact with their students. Whether it is something about an activity that the university is

planning or an educational video that they want to share, social media is a great way to get that

information to the students. Also with social media, the teachers can also share information and

videos to their students without having to see them in person.

I will be using this source in my research paper, because I think it is good to know how

This article talks about how social media is used by students to connect with people

about their classwork. If people are doing a group assignment, they do not have to either meet

up somewhere or cram in class to get the assignment done. They can easily talk about it via

social media. This article also talks about how soon social media will be a normal classroom tool

for assignments and classwork. Many teachers are seeing apps like Twitter and Facebook as

good tools for communicating with their students.

The purpose of this article is to show that social media can be a positive thing in

classrooms all around the globe. And it is soon that social media will be used everyday in the

classroom. The audience for this article are students that are wondering how social media is

going to change their education. Brian Hughes wrote this essay and he is the CEO of Integrity

Marketing and Consulting. I think he is very credible, because he is a CEO and would not want

to misinform students. Entrepreneur is the website that this article is on and it is very credible,

because many entrepreneurs post articles on here that are very informative.

I will be using this article in my research essay, because it shows how are education

system is changing due to social media. It also shows that social media can be used in a

positive way when it comes to education. And it raises the question, if social media was to be

used in classrooms, would students use it for the right reason?

In this article, Mark Blankenship writes about his experiences with social media use in

educational situations. He participated in a college lecture, but could not be there in person. He

was able to skype with the classroom and talk to them in almost the same way he would’ve

been able to if he was there in person. In his article, he focused on how social media can be

used correctly for social media. He also was concerned that if social media was used too much

then the students personal and professional lives would butt-heads too much. Therefore,

causing the distraction that social media can have.

His purpose for writing this essay was to show that social media is not all bad and is

used around the world for great educational purposes. But if used in the wrong way it can do

more harm than good. The audience for this piece was students and teachers wanting to use

social media in classrooms and are wanting to see if it is good or bad. The writing is from a

personal experience and his and some other colleagues opinions on social media. Mark

Blankenship is a professional theater critic and reporter. He uses social media in his everyday

life and now is looking into the effects of it. This makes him credible, because he knows how

social media can be used in classrooms in a positive way. This source is credible, because it is

written by the credible author.

I will use this source in my research paper, because it can show how social media is

used in the classroom in a positive way. Although the author does say that social media can be

a distraction, this article has shown that educational videos on YouTube and using Skype can

promote good learning in classrooms.
