Supplication of Imam Ali Al-Sajjad (P) for His Parents
Imam Ali Al-Sajjad (P) is the son of

Below is the translation of the
prayer:
O God,
bless Muhammed, Thy slave and
Thy messenger, and his Household,
the pure, and single them out for
the best of Thy blessings, Thy
mercy,
Thy benedictions, and Thy peace!
And single out my parents, O God,
for honour with Thee and blessings
from Thee, O Most Merciful of the
merciful!
O God,
bless Muhammed and his
Household,
teach me through inspiration
knowledge of everything incumbent
upon me toward them, and gather
within me knowledge of all that
completely!
Then make me act in accordance
with what Thou hast inspired me
and give me the success to put into
practice, the knowledge Thou hast
shown to me, lest I fail to act
according to something Thou hast
taught me, or my limbs feel too
heavy to perform, that with which
Thou hast inspired me!
O God,
bless Muhammed and his
Household,
as Thou hast ennobled us through
him, and bless Muhammed and
his Household, as Thou hast made
incumbent upon us, rights toward
the creatures because of him!113
O God,
fill me with awe of my parents,
the awe one has toward a
tyrannical sovereign, and let me be
devoted to them, with the devotion
of a compassionate mother!
Make my obedience and devotion
to them, more gladdening to my
eyes
than sleep to the drowsy and more
refreshing to my breast than drink
to the thirsty, so that I may prefer
their inclination to my inclination,
set their satisfaction before my

devotion to me though it be little,
and make little of my devotion to
them
though it be great.
O God,
lower before them my voice,
make agreeable to them my words,
make mild before them my temper,
make tender toward them my heart,
and turn me into their kind
companion, their loving friend!
O God,
thank them for my upbringing,
reward them for honouring me,
and guard them as they guarded
me in my infancy!
O God,
and whatever harm has touched
them from me, detested thing has
reached them from me, or right of
theirs which has been neglected by
me, allow it to alleviate their sins,
raise them in their degrees, and
add to their good deeds!
O He who changes evil deeds into
manifold good deeds!114
O God,
whatever word through which they
have transgressed against me,
act through which they have been
immoderate with me, right of mine
which they have left neglected,
or obligation toward me in which
they have fallen short, I grant it
to them
and bestow it upon them,
and I beseech Thee to remove from
them its ill consequence,
for I do not accuse them
concerning myself, find them slow
in their devotion toward me, or
dislike the way they have attended
to my affairs, my Lord!
They have rights against me which
are more incumbent, precedence
in beneficence toward me that is
greater, and kindness toward me
that is mightier than that I should
settle accounts with justice
or repay them with equivalents.
Where then, my God, would be
their long occupation with bringing
me up?
Where the hardship of their toil
in taking care of me?
Where the stinting of themselves
to provide me with plenty?
What an idea!

God has promised the one who is patient reward in the after-life by stating in the Holy
Quran:
“Say: O my servants who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) your Lord; for those
who do good in this world is good, and God’s earth is spacious; only the patient will
be paid back (in the hereafter) their reward in full without measure.” (Quran, 39:10)
Also, God has promised victory for the patient and demise for the impatient: “I (God)
swear by time, Most surely man is in loss, Except those who believe and do good,
and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience.” (Quran, 103:1-
3). Faith, according to Islam, has two halves, one being gratitude (being thankful) and
the other being patience. This paper will deal with the following: true patience and its
meaning, the three pillars of patience and man’s essential need for patience.
Islam sees patience as a noble human characteristic. He who posses it will reach joy
and inner peace. Islam also views patience as a strength and the key to fixing all
matters of one’s self, and as the path to happiness and righteousness. The person

who is patient is he who trains himself to fight back against all evil thoughts and actions.
Man is the one who steers his soul into either eternal Paradise or eternal Hell-Fire. This
harness which man uses for steering his soul is patience. Islam encourages people to seek
dependence, help, and salvation from God. God alone is the Creator, the Sustainer, and
therefore is alone the Saviour.
The first pillar is patience with the duties and obligations towards people and
God. Some examples of this are praying the five daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage
to Mecca, respecting one’s parents, marriage, and respect towards one’s spouse. The
second pillar is patience in abstaining from all that God has made forbidden. Some
examples here are: stealing, cheating, lying, backbiting, etc. The third pillar is patience
with what may befall man from natural disasters, illness, and death. God says in the
Quran:
“O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and
persevere whatever may befall thee.” (Holy Quran 31:17)
Islam also teaches man to be patient when he has health, money, happiness, and all
the good in his life. In order to refrain from pride and arrogance and from becoming
ungrateful to the Bestower of these blessings and bounties, one needs patience. Fulfilling
one’s duties towards God and not to become arrogant also require patience. Trying not to
use blessings in evil ways and abstaining from what God has labelled as forbidden also
require patience.
Patience is also needed with illness and death. In illness one must be patient in seeking
a cure and must be thankful that they are not in a worse position. In Death one must
remember that death is simply a doorway to eternity, and that the true winners are the
ones that earned a place in Paradise through their deeds.
“And We most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of
property and lives and fruit; and give good news to the patient, who, when a
misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are God’s and to Him we shall surely return.
Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the
followers of the right course.” (Holy Quran 2:155-157)

Merciful pardon if his repentance is genuine.
Islam puts the Mercy of God before His
Justice. The very first verse of the Quran is
“In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the
Merciful”. Islam believes that “His Mercy
is before His wrath.”
Thus the Muslims have a finely
balanced faith, which is inclined neither to
this side nor to that. It does not teach us that
God is a high-handed avenger who does not
forgive a single sin or mistake; but it does not

God - Mindedness
“In the name of Allah, the
Beneficent, the Merciful.” Holy Qur’an
This phrase occurs at the beginning of
every chapter (Surah) of the Qur’an except
one. It is used by Muslims before starting
every work - before reading, before eating,
before starting their work, before sleeping.
Islam teaches man to start every good effort
with the holy name of God who is Beneficent
and Merciful, invoking His mercy to bless
his efforts with success.
The goal of Islam is to make a man “God-
minded”; it wants him to realize that he,
by himself, is nothing that all his efforts
are fruitless unless rewarded by God with
success. And that realization is combined
with the satisfaction that God is Beneficent
and Merciful, who will not disappoint him in
his hope and belief.
It is very amusing to note that the
common image of Islam, in the eyes of non-
Muslims, is that of a religion whose god
is a wrathful one, like the god of the Old
Testament, inflicting punishment on the spur
of the moment. Do a mistake and you get a
jolly good bang on your head!

sentence of the Qur’an describes God as
Beneficent and Merciful. And that formula
is used by every Muslim hundreds of times
every day. Ant the Muslims believe that by

The Creation of What Lies Between the Heavens and the Earth

Scientists state that first of all, a mass of hot gas increased in density. This mass later divided into smaller parts to
form galactic matter and later still, the stars and planets. To put it another way, the Earth along with stars around
it, are all parts which separated from a united body of gas. Some of these parts brought the suns and planets
into being, thus leading to the emergence of the many Solar Systems and galaxies. As we have set out in earlier
sections, the universe was first in a state of “ratq” (fusion: combined together, united) and then became “fataqa”
(divided into parts). The emergence of the universe is described with the most suitable words in the Qur’an, in
such a way as to confirm the scientific accounts. [1]
On the occasion of every division, a few particles remained outside the new, fundamental bodies forming in
space. The scientific name for these extra particles is “interstellar galactic material.” Interstellar matter consists
of 60% of hydrogen, 38% of helium and 2% of all other elements. 99% of the interstellar matter consists of
interstellar gas and 1% of interstellar dust, which probably consists of heavy elements in small particles of
0,0001 to 0.001 mm in diameter. Scientists regard these substances as very important from the point of view of
astrophysical measurements. These substances are so fine as to be capable of being regarded as dust, smoke or
gas. However, when one considers these substances as a whole, they represent a larger mass than the total of
all the galaxies in space. Although the existence of this interstellar galactic matter was only discovered in 1920,
attention was drawn to the existence of these particles, described as “ma baynahuma”-translated as “everything
between them”-hundreds of years ago in the Qur’an. [2]
