B. Selected Text Readings

Text 1
Triathlons are contests where athletes compete to finish three different events in
the shortest time. They are, most commonly, swimming, cycling and running. Triathlon
events were first included in the 2000 Olympics.

A number of triathlon events are held in Hong Kong every year. There are even
triathlons for young people aged between 12 and 15. In 2011, racers swam 250 m,
biked 8 km and ran 1.7 km to compete in a TriKinds Triathlon Championship.

Text 2
Most schools in Hong Kong have their own basketball teams, but few people
know that basketball was first invented for student! In 1891, a Canadian sports
professor created it for his students to play indoors during the cold winter. For the
world’s first-ever basketball game, he fixed two peach baskets to the walls for players
to shoot to score with a football.

Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936. It is a popular sport all over the
world, though less widely so than football. This sport has a huge fan base in Hong Kong,
and most of them are NBA (National Basketball Association) fans.

Text 3
Road cycling was one of the sport events included in the first modern Olympics in
1896. However, all races were for men only. Women racers were finally allowed to
compete in the 1984 Olympics.

Outside of the racing ground, cycling is a well-loved everyday sport. It is easy to

learn, great for staying fit and exploring places. When cycling, you must take care to
stay on the cycling path – if there is one. If you are cycling on a busy road, you have to
keep a close eye on the road condition and follow the traffic rules. Most importantly,
you must wear a helmet for protection at all times.

B-1. Answer the following questions briefly.

1. What is triathlon?
2. What are the three common events included in triathlon?
3. How far does a trikid have to swim, to bike and to run in a triathlon?
4. Who invented basketball, and for what?
5. When did basketball first become an Olympic game?
6. Which ball game has more fans, basketball or football?
7. When were women allowed to compete in road cycling?
8. Why is cycling so well-loved?
9. Why should people wear helmets when they cycle on the road?

B-2. Choose the correct answers. (omitted)
