Thank you for giving me a slot in your busy schedule to explain what I understand is my role in the Faculty. OK, this is
my first slide and I would like you to use your mobiles to guide us through this presentation. It͛s just a pity that we
can͛t do this right now perhaps next year we can!

NEXT SLIDE OR GLOG

When I was in Clandeyboye road primary school we would often look forward to the class when a big box with a loud
speaker in it would be wheeled into the classroom. We would be treated to music or a reading of some story or
other. At Bangor Grammar School we would sometimes be treated to slide shows of science subjects. In Geography
classes there would be the odd film. These memories are among my first introductions to film and essentially
multimedia in the classroom.

NEXT SLIDE

Way back in 1970͛s my father bought an old clockwork 16mm Kodak movie camera. He would buy movie film in
Lazars in Belfast and shoot films of us at the seaside, in the garden, at home and film somebody͛s wedding. My
cousin Paul would often refer to my father as Cecil B D Hutchison. I soon got the filming bug and bought an old
clockwork Bolex 8mm movie camera. It wasn͛t long before I was boring the family with my films of ducks in Bangor
duck pond and racing cars at Kirkistown. Why were they boring? I͛ll get to this later. In the 80͛s I upgraded to a
Minolta 401 super8 and now I have a Beaulieu super8 movie camera.

In the 90͛s with the help of Tim Hall and Freda Mishan I competed for funding under the EU Comet program ͞training
trainers͟. I was successful and was able to buy a computer and video camera. Using these tools I produced
animations and videos to explain how gas flows in a gas chromatograph. Later I developed an interactive CD for
Materials Ireland and a video to explain and promote ͞Technology Awareness͟. Along with Michael Sadlier in the UL
Filmmakers society we were churning out video͛s every month.

Since I joined NIHE/UL I have always been interested in the application of new technology to teaching. Along with
MAC Microelectronics Application Centre we sought funding to make a documentary on Irish writers abroad. Our
pilot was to be ͞James Joyce in Trieste͟. Again with Tim Hall I explored the idea that we could produce a universal
computer based instruction manual. By Universal I mean that it would be based on graphics and not language.
Something I͛m sort of eluding to with the ͞glog͟.

Recently I studied for an MA in elearning design and development. Through this program I began to understand
more fully the need for a more pedagogical approach to using computers, the web, and multimedia for teaching. My
films were boring because I was simply recording events out of context! We͛ve probably all been to: ͞a slideshow of
my holidays͟. I hope to encourage an approach to using elearning tools that would engage students and enrich
teaching. I hope that in this new role I can help promote elearning in this Faculty.

So whats next? Meet department heads and course leaders perhaps at department meeting. Start a series of
workshops at which peers will demystify web and pod casts; image file size reduction; demystify programmes such
as flash, articulate, raptivity; social network tools, mobile phone text tools and more.

Thank you!
