Objective: Discuss the industrial importance of the halogens and their compounds

.Chlorine

 Chlorine is a disinfectant – it is used to kill bacteria in drinking water and swimming

pools.
 Chlorine dissolved in Sodium Hydroxide is bleach. It forms Sodium Chlorate (I) – NaClO.
Domestic bleach contains about 5% NaClO
Iodine

 Iodine can be used as an antiseptic to kill bacteria.

 Iodine is used as a radioactive tracer in medical diagnosis.
Bromine

 Bromine is used in the textile industry for bleaching and shrink proofing wool.
 Bromine is also used in gold mining extraction processes and in oil- and gas-well drilling.
Fluorine

 Fluorides are mainly used in toothpaste.

Halogenated Hydrocarbons

 Chloromethane is used as a refrigerant, manufacture of silicone and synthetic rubber.

 Dichloromethane and trichloromethane are both used as industrial solvents.
 Chloroethane is used as a local anesthetic.
 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is used to make synthetic pipes.
 Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) are used as
refrigerants and in propellants in aerosol sprays.
 Carbon tetrachloride is used as a dry cleaning solvent
 Bromotrifluoromethane is used in fire extinguisher systems.
