INTRODUCTION

A washing machine (laundry machine, clothes washer, or washer) is a

machine used to wash laundry, such as clothing and sheets. The term is
mostly applied to machines that use water as opposed to dry cleaning
(which uses alternative cleaning fluids, and is performed by specialist
businesses) or ultrasonic cleaners.

Clothes washer technology developed as a way to reduce the manual labor

spent, providing an open basin or sealed container with paddles or fingers
to automatically agitate the clothing. The earliest machines were hand-
operated and constructed from wood, while later machines made of metal
permitted a fire to burn below the washtub, keeping the water warm
throughout the day's washing.

In 2001, Whirlpool Corporation introduced the Calypso, the first vertical-

axis high efficiency washing machine to be top-loading. A wash plate in
the bottom of the tub nutated (a special wobbling motion) to bounce,
shake, and toss the laundry around. Simultaneously, water containing
detergent was sprayed on to the laundry. The machine proved to be good
at cleaning, but gained a bad reputation due to frequent breakdowns and
destruction of laundry. The washer was recalled with a class-action
lawsuit and pulled off the market.

In 2003, Maytag introduced their top-loading Neptune washer. Instead of

an agitator, the machine had two wash plates, perpendicular to each other

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 3

and at a 45 degree angle from the bottom of the tub. The machine would
fill with only a small amount of water and the two washplates would
tumble the load within it, mimicking the action of a front-loading washer
in a vertical axis design.

In 2007, Sanyo introduced the first drum type washing machine with "Air
Wash" function.[23] This washing machine uses only 50 liters of water in
the recycle mode.

In 2008, the University of Leeds created a concept washing machine that

uses only a cup (less than 300 ml) of water and 20 kg of re-usable plastic
chips to carry out a full wash. The machine leaves clothes virtually dry,
and uses less than 2 % of the water and energy otherwise used by a
conventional machine. As such, it could save billions of liters of water
each year. The concept is being developed as the Xeros Washing Machine.

The project report work gives the analysis of BPL washing machine. In
general and scope, sales Gorur Enterprises, Shimoga. It also gives the
summary of suggestions for improving the marketing strategy or the
observation made during the survey. This type of study may help the firm
to review its marketing strategy.

Shimoga customers are surveyed in different segments of the society
based on income, Status and vacation.

In secondary data collection, the company uses information from other

sources that has already been researched by somebody else. Instead of
carrying out research yourself like in primary research, you simply use
somebody else's results that have already been collected which have been
carried out in similar ways to how you would have carried it out.
There are many methods of collecting secondary data and the main
methods include: Websites, Other companies reports, etc.

Washing Machines
Washing machines has become one of the essential gadgets in modern day
life. It has proved to be a great help with washing clothes in today's era
where time and effort has become very expensive.

Types of Washing Machines

They are categorized into various groups according to the functionality as
follows:
By Loading:
 Front Loading
 Top loading
Difference between front loading and top loading washing machines:
(Front Loading vs. Top Loading)
 Front loading washing machines are heavier than top loading
counterparts. Thus top loading machines are easier to move.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 11

 Front loading machines cannot be stopped once you start the process,
whereas in Top loading machine you can add clothes anytime in
between the process.
 Front loading machine gives better performance as compared to the
Top loading ones.
 Front loading machines are also comparatively more efficient in terms
of resources, like water and power.
 Not necessarily always but usually Top loading machines are cheaper
and easier to handle.
 Top loading machine is not good for delicate laundry but Front loading
can handle them.
 Maintenance cost is almost nil in Top loading machines, whereas Front
loading machines have maintenance cost, as it has some serviceable
parts.
 Front loading washing machines takes longer washing time. Thus it
consumes more energy as well.
By Function:
 Semi Automatic
 Fully Automatic
These two types can be compared as follows:
(Semi automatic vs. fully automatic washing machines)
A semi-automatic, as the name suggests, will involve some manual work.
For one thing these are top loading twin tub machines where the washer
and the dryer are separate units. So you have the task of loading and
unloading a couple of extra times.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 12

A fully automatic, on the other hand, can be either front or top loading and
only requires you to load the dirty laundry and unload them after the
wash. It goes without saying that a semi-automatic is cheaper than the
fully automatic machine.

About Load of Washing Machines:

Generally standard load for washing machines is 5 - 6 Kg, a bit higher
loads is becoming standard this days. Also 7+ kg are available in the
market, for higher usage i.e for need involving more volume of clothes.
Also higher drum size means less creasing of clothes, which in turns
means easier ironing.

Required Features in Washing Machines:

Must required:
 It should have good washing quality in a given price range -
Obviously.
 Not just good looks, but solid build is also very much required. Your
machine should be robust for minimum wear and tear.
 On power or machine failure, you should be able to remove soap water
and clothes from the machines for manual washing and drying.
 While spinning, it should not do be vibrtaing or sliding or moving
around. It should be stable at one place.
 On power failure, it should restart from the point it stopped. (i.e.
should have Memory of wash cycle)

Optional:
1. Noise made while operation should be minimum.
2. May have an inbuild water heater if you need it.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 13

3. Water softeners or connector for areas having hard water.
4. Delayed wash (timer for starting at specific time, but for safety never
start these kind of home appliances in your absence).
5. Adjustable volume for alarm/buzzer sound.
6. Child lock for front loaders. A good safety feature.

INTRODUCTION TO WASHING MACHINE

Introduction
A washing machine is an electronic home application used for
cleaning dirty clothes by a process of washing mankind has come a long
way from stone tools to aircraft. The standard of life has improved as time
advances and so the complexity. Now goods gets for siding household
activities are part of our life have mixers, grinders and vacuum cleaners.
Washing Machine is the new addition to the list. It’s a simple and
yet a very useful god gets that can save a lot of energy and time. Statistics
say, washing the clothes is considered to the toughest and time consuming
work by most of the housewife’s in India. And now we have machines to
do that for us. All that we have to do is to put our clothes and press a
couple of buttons and that’s it.
To start with let’s understand how we go about washing our clothes.
First we soak our clothes in water and detergent, beat then hard to remove
the dirt, rinse them in clean water, Squeeze them to remove water and
spread them to dry. Some times machine also dries the clothes.

Various types of Washing Machines in India

In this modern era, we can find washing machines in all families in their
day to day life. Washing machine also provides we that "ease and
convenience" for overcoming the burden of washing clothes that keep
accumulating every day.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 16

We can find several automatic and semi-automatic products offered in
Indian market. We would need to choose the right one that would suit the
size of our family and the type of machine and price that we have on our
mind. Indian market deals with those few types of washing machines such
as Top Loading, Top loading with high efficiency, Front loading type etc.
For those who already own washing machines, we can make use of
washing machine service centers. However, there are pros and cons for
each.

Types of Washing Machines

1. Regular Top Loading Washing Machines
Regular top loading washing machines are traditional types of washing
machines. If we fill the tubs with water an agitator spins the clothes from
the top to the bottom and back again. This wave permits the cleanser and
water to reach every piece of the clothes and takes away the dirt. Top
loading washing machine is the best choice if we don’t want to give much
strain to our body while washing. We have separate tubs or vessels for the
washing and the drying in some of its types. High Efficiency Top- loading
washing machine is advanced type of Regular top- loaders. It is further
divided into 2 types:

Semi-Automatic Washing Machine

An innovative and seamless choice for Indian women is semi-automatic
Washing machines. We have separate tubs or vessels for both washing and
drying. We can get these washing machines in a very low cost around Rs.
6000 for 6 kg wash loads. We can even get a single washer tub for
washing without drier for around Rs.4500. There are many Brands

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 17

available nowadays .Some Semi- automatic brands of washing machine
are Whirlpool, Onida, Godrej, Kelvinator and Samsung etc.

Fully Automatic Washing Machine

We can find single tub in a fully automatic washing machine that works as
washer, rinser as well as the drier. We just have to connect the water flow
adding detergent. Later soak our clothes and now a fully automatic
washing machine will do the rest automatically. It has a top wash Method.
The washing method in these machines include Prewash (Soak), hot water
wash, heavy wash, normal wash and quick wash. It has automatic wash
control feature too. We can get a fully automatic washing machine for
around Rs. 12000 with some of these features. Some brands of fully
automatic top-loading washing machines are BPL, Godrej, Whirlpool,
Samsung and Videocon etc.

Front Loading Washing Machines

These are fully automatic machines and the clothes are loaded from the
front side. It consumes less electric energy, water and detergent and will
give we good washing results. It has fast spinner which extracts wetness
from wet masses, so that we can reduce our drying time. Its large capacity
which allows we to wash many bulky fabrics at a time, without giving up
the effective cleaning. It has certain features such as–

 Child lock
 Hot water wash
 Wash load (amount of clothes that the washing machine can handle)
sensor etc.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 18

Washing machine is available in plastic or steel tubs. The starting price
range for front wash loaders are around Rs.14000. BPL is the first
company to produce front loading type of washing machine in India.
There are many companies that produce washing machine such as LG,
Whirlpool, and Samsung etc.

Advantages agitator mechanism over impeller mechanism

1) Agitator action stimulates the manual Washing action to a grater
extent them on hydraulic action general by rotating the water
column.
2) Agitator Machines are designed to result in tangle free and reduced
wrinkle wash but Impeller type results in acute tangling. Moreover
the clothes load becomes like a ball increasing the chances of
getting tangled.
3) Agitator type washes well up to 5 kg load dry weight at maximum
water level. Impeller machines result in poor wash performance
with increasing load.

Disadvantages of Front Loading Washing Machine

1) Only two waster level settings are possible.
2) Machines have to be exacted properly to avoid load noise and
“Walking”.
3) Manufacturing cost is high, as a front-loading architecture requires
rise to tangling of clothes.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 19

4) The front door cannot be opened in case of a power failure, which
results in the clothes being soaked in water detergent for a longer
time period..

Features of Washing Machine

 Two-way wash-action.
 Polypropylene/ poly tuff spin drier tub.
 Liquid-type balancer for reducing vibration during spin-drying.
 Rustproof polymer base and pre-coated metal body.
 Separate timers for wash and spin dry.
 Separate maintains-free motors for washer and spin dryer.
 Safety device to protect motors from over heading.

Washing
Begins after the tub is filled with clothes and the agitator’s moves the
laundry and forces water trough it.

Rinsing
Takes place after the washing of clothes, it rinses the clothes and takes the
water out of the clothes and it is removed out of the tub after the rinsing
process is finished.

Spin-Drying
As the inner tub spins excess water from the boundary then it extracts the
water from the clothes, then the water is pumped out from the outer tub.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 20

Laundry
Is a place where clothes are washed?

History of Laundry: - (Commercial)

Commercial Laundries started when the Roman sent clothes to
commercial laundries as long as 2000 Years ago. During the middle ages
the woollen clothing that everyone move usually was never washed and
laundries all but disappeared.

The laundry as we know it today owes its start to the California gold rust
of 1849. A miner named Davis failed to gold, so he started a laundry near
Oakland, California. At first he washed clothes in barrel. The Charles
matter designed a crude wooden wash wheel for him and other
improvement followed.

Commercial Laundries
Where clothes are washed for money is know as commercial
laundries when customer sends a bundle of clothes to the laundry several
steps are taken place in a several departments. After the laundry has been
marked for identification workers sort the clothes according to kind of
material and the colour then the clothes go to the washers. Commercial
washing machine hold 11 to 54 kgs. of laundry.
Rotating cylinders on the washing machine swish the clothes in
soap or detergent until they are cleared. The soaps or detergents may be
charged for washing clothes until the clothes are cleaned. At least four hot
water rinses follow to make save all dirt and soap removed and the clothes
go to the spinner the clothes are spinned until the water is removed from

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 21

the clothes. This commercial laundries are made for business to make
money, the clothes are given to commercial laundries are for the middle
class people who have no time to do this job or those families where
husband and wife’s are working.

Home Laundries
In olden days people are washing clothes in streams lakes and
besides taps they are beating clothes on rocks to remove dirt from the
clothes people spent lot of time in washing clothes, in other backward
region people still use this method.
But now a days many developed and developing countries are using
automatic electric washing machine that removes the dirt from the clothes
and also dries the clothes the washing machine has a gas electric heating
which will dries the clothes after removing the dirt from the clothes,
which are dried, are ironed, probable in all homes there will be iron box
the dried clothes are ironed or pressed with iron box for better looking.

Special Laundries
Special laundries are those laundries which are worked in hotels,
restaurants and hospitals etc., This laundries will wash the clothes which
are use in their restaurants Rooms, Lodges and hospitals they have their
own laundry for this work.

Bluing
Bluing is used to whiten the white clothes, while clothes have
tendency to return yellowish when washed and the bluing overcomes this
tendency. Bluing can be purchased in either liquid or solid from the

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 22

substance to use to make bluing are soluble precision blued and coal tar
blue, Blue can be use during Rising to Improve “Brightness” of white
clothes.

History of washing machine

Home equipment developed from during the 20th century, simple
hand operated tools for washing and cleaning into highly complicated
mechanical appliances, many of them automatically controlled, there were
a number of reason for this development, one of the main one being the
near disappearance of the domestic servant.
Equipment was therefore designed to save the housewives time and
energy; those new and improved appliances was increased by the growing
number of married women gainfully employed outside the home.

Rinsing and spin drier

Rinsing: Two types of rinsing are that
1. First Rinsing
2. Second Rinsing
1. First Rinsing
1) Transfer the clothes to the Spin Drier tub and place the spinner ca;
on the top of the clothes.
2) Close the spin dryer lid.
3) Set the spinner time for 1 to 2 minutes. Spin dryer tub will start
rotating and soap solution from clothes will be drained.
4) After spin dryer timer returns to off position, change the water
supply selector to spin tub position and add water for about a
minute.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 23

5) Run the spin dryer tub again for 1 to 2 minutes.
2. Second Rinsing
Second rinsing is done with clothes, the washtubs offers the choice
of two Rinse modes.
(a) Overflow Rinse mode
In this mode, water is continuously supplied to the tub during
rinsing and the dirty water flows out through the overflow those. In this
mode very efficient rinsing can be doe using a little extra amount of water.
 Transfer the clothes to the washtub.
 Set the selector to Rinse position.
 Open the top and fill the washtub.
 When water starts over flowing. Set the washer timer for 3 to 5
minutes.
 Close the tub when rinsing stops.
 When rinsing is over, set the selector to drain position and drain in
water.
(b) Soak Rinse Mode
 Transfer the clothes to the wash Tub.
 Set the selector to Rinse position.
 Fill the Tub with water to its high position.
 Set the washer Timer for 3 to 5 minutes of operation.
 After rinsing is over drain the water by setting the selector to drain
position.

Spin Dryer

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 24

The Spin Dries does not dry clothes fully, only 35%-55% of the
water will be evaporated.
The method of Spin Drier by rotation of a preformatted drum on a
vertical axis is similar to that used in some washing machines, the spin
drier capacity is 4 kgs, but the speed of the rotations is generally i.e., 1380
rotation per minute (RPM), therefore the percentage of water extracted is
also higher.
Spin Drying
Some of the important information about Spin Drying.
1. Transfer the clothes to the Spin Dryer Tub, distributing them
evenly.
2. Place the spinner cap over the clothes to prevent them from flying
out.
3. Close the spin dryer, if the spin dryer lid is not closed spin dryer tub
will not rotate.
4. Set the spin dryer Timer.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 25

OPERATING INSTRUCTION

Washing
1) Fit the pour inlet into the water inlet point on the control panel
surely.
2) Connect one end of inlet hose to pour inlet and the other end to a
tap.
3) Let the drain hose down. The drain hose should remain down when
the washer is in operation.
4) Insert the power card into an electrical outlet.
5) Set the selector to wash.
6) Set the water supply selector to wash tub position.
7) Add to require amount of detergent.
8) Put the clothing in the washtub evenly one at a time.
9) Turn the washer timer to the desired wash time position. The
washing action will begin. Machine will stop after completing the
wash.
10). When the washing is done, drain the water by setting the selector
to the drain position.

temperature ranging 10 to 25 c.

Cuffs and collars

It is recommended that the cuffs and callers of shirts are reserved
and buttoned at the end time of putting in the machine to ensure that the
soiled portion are exposed and scrubbed better during wash. Stain
remover can also be sued for better result.

Loading
The machine will clean very effectively at the rated load. Superior
wash action cannot be achieved if loaded at 75 – 80% of rated load.
“Do not over load the machine”

Water level

Select the water level to match the wash load. For getting good
wash quantity ensured that the water level is minimum 2 inches above the
level of clothes.

Clothes
Better washing sort the clothes
1) Wash synthetic and cotton clothes separately.
2) Wash while and coloured clothes separately.
3) Do not mix the clothes which loss (Towels, bed sheets etc.,) or
catch LINT (Dark clothes, dhotis etc.,) “Shake the clothes

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 53

 Most of the people have purchased Videocon, BPL, LG for its Product
features and low prices, LG for its brand name & look and Sansui for
its low prices.
 Regarding special offers and gifts BPL stands first followed by others.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 54

Suggestions

 The Company must give a free flow of goods to the dealers. If in case
of short supply at the dealers people will start next best alternative and
if the people are satisfied with the next best alternative the company
looses its customers. Advertisements and promotional measures taken
there of by the company becomes an utter waste.
 The Company takes very less promotional measures on products which
considered being old compared to the new products in the line. They
live it to the dealers to take promotional measures in this case. Since
the company saves half of the advertisements cost the company cannot
expect the dealers to take promotional measures to a very high extent.
The company should take a bit
 If the prices of washing machine be reduced to the possible extent
respected to other companies this will definitely increased in the
market shore for BPL washing machine.
 The margin to the dealers is pretty low a business man expects at least
10% of margin in his business which leads to interest in marketing the
companies products. The margin given by company that is in the sale
of BPL washing machine amounts to 8% after taxation and handling
charges the margin amounts to 6% to 7% due to this fact the dealer
may loose interest in marketing the company’s product. Thereby it has
to increase the dealer’s margin to at least 10%.
 Periodical Survey of the market is necessary by the company to know
changing altitudes regarding the products.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 55

 The efficiency of the staff should be increased which leads to growth
of the firm.
 The firm should advertise its name of shop in the middle of city buy
putting as big board and specifying the goods which are sold by the
firm by this type of commodity by this there will boost in the sales of
commodities.
 There must be an attractive global [That is the shapes names in front of
the shop to attract customers.]
 Different promotional measures can be taken up by the concern. The
different promotional measures that can be taken can be stated as:
 An anniversary; day can be celebrated in which for 2 or more days the
firm should sell the products at no loss no profit basis with proper
advertisement. This will definitely lead to increase in sale.
 Shirts wearing the name of the firm should be given for the sales boys
so that it acts as standardization as well as advertisements and
representation of the firm.
 Advertisements by the concern has to be made in places where an
advertisement has not been covered.
 Lottery systems can be taken up by firms so that it leads to increase the
sales.
 Additional Discounts for the sub-dealers on the stock listed can be
introduced so that it leads to increase of sales.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 56

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College, Shivamogga 57

The growing middle class population is largely emphasizing on consumer
electronic products that are more convenient to use and more efficient.
Indian washing machine market clearly substantiates this fact. Currently,
accounting for around 63% of volume sales, semi-automatic ‘twin-tub’
category dominates the washing machine market. But in terms of growth,
the fully-automatic category is performing extremely well in the Indian
market. The volume sales of fully-automatic washing machines are
expected to surpass that of semi-automatic washing machine in coming
few years."The players in the consumer electronics space consider India a
market for transactions, which is a short-term, unsustainable strategy,
household, or individual to realized consumption. So it totally depends on
the consumer show they are having focus on the consumer products.
Similarly, in the long run, households with no income eventually have no
consumption (wealth is depleted). While the debate surrounding beliefs
about how income and consumption are related. Soevery thing depends on
the income of people i.e. low, middle or high income.
