Woman's Car Flew Off Road, Rammed Tree.

She Climbed
Out 6 Days Later

WASHINGTON: An American woman has been found alive six days after her car
flew off a highway and landed on a mesquite tree in the state of Arizona, police said
on Wednesday.
The 53-year-old woman was traveling on national route 60 near Wickenburg, about
50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Phoenix, when she lost control on October 12, the
Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

She crashed through a highway railing and plunged 50 feet (17 meters) into the tree
where the vehicle "remained suspended above the ground," the state troopers said.

"There were no apparent witnesses to the crash and it would be six days before the
woman would be discovered by authorities," the troopers said.

On October 18, an Arizona highway maintenance crew and a rancher were trying to
corral a stray cow when they noticed the broken fence and then the mangled vehicle
still lodged in the tree, the troopers' statement said.

A trooper, along with the maintenance crew and rancher, could not find anyone in
the car but discovered "human tracks" leading towards a river bed.

After following the tracks for 500 yards (457 meters) the rescuers found the severely
dehydrated woman with serious injuries, the statement said, without identifying her.

The woman told the trooper that she stayed inside her vehicle for "several days"
before she climbed out and tried to walk towards railroad tracks in the hope she
would be found. But she was too weak to make it.

The woman was taken by helicopter to hospital after her rescue.

Colonel Frank Milstead, the Department of Public Safety Director, praised the
rescuers' diligence.
Pak-Origin Man Owned Limousine Involved In Deadly US
Accident: Reports

NEW YORK: A Pakistani-origin man, thought to be an FBI informant, owned the monster stretch
limousine that was involved in one of the worst road accidents in the US that killed 20 people in
upstate New York, media reports said today.
New York's Governor Andrew Cuomo said the modified limo that crashed in the town of Schoharie
on Saturday was not even supposed to be on the road.

Moreover, the driver "did not have the appropriate driver's license to be operating that vehicle,"
Mr Cumo said on Monday as authorities stepped up the probe to find out what caused the tragedy.
Official records also show Prestige Limousines, the company that owns the limo, has been cited
for 22 violations in the last 24 months, CBS News reported.

It is owned by Shahed Hussain, who is of Pakistani-origin. According to court and public records,
a man by the same name, was caught in Albany in 2001 trying to help someone obtain a driver's
license illegally. He pleaded guilty in 2003, and became an FBI informant.
Records show Hussain testified in several high-profile terror cases. A photo taken from
surveillance videotape shows him in 2004 as an informant holding an inert rocket launcher during
a sting operation, the CBS News report said.
State police major Robert Patnaude said authorities have located Hussain, who is currently in
Pakistan.
The FBI did not comment on whether Hussain was an informant, the report said.

A New York Times report, quoting a law enforcement official suggested that his son may be
operating the limousine company.
The driver of the limo, Scott Lisinicchia, was busted twice on drug charges during the past eight
years - including once during a traffic stop, the New York Post reported.
The birthday party guests were riding in a 2001 Ford Expedition that was converted into a
limousine.
The altered vehicles have always worried officials, said Peter Goelz, former managing director of
the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

"That is because after-market modifications often affect a vehicle's structural integrity and safety",
Mr Goelz told CNN.
The NTSB is now examining when and how the vehicle was converted and what caused this
tragedy.
"That company and that vehicle have been under scrutiny at the DOT (Department of
Transportation) in the past," Major Patnaude.
An SMS lead to deadly traffic pileup

WASHINGTON: A 19-year-old driver was texting just before his pickup truck, two school buses
and a tractor truck collided in a deadly pileup on an interstate highway in Missouri last year, the
National Transportation Safety Board said on Monday.

Two people - the pickup driver and a 15-year-old student on one of the buses - were killed and 38
others were injured in the Aug. 5, 2010 accident on the interstate highway near Gray Summit,
Missouri Nearly 50 students, mostly members of a high school band from St. James, Missouri,
were on the buses heading to the Six Flags St. Louis amusement park.

The chain of rear end collisions began when the pickup truck rammed the back of the tractor truck,
the board said. The pickup was then rear-ended by a school bus, which was in turn struck by the
second bus.
The board is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to hear the results of an investigation into the accident
and to make safety recommendations. The meeting will focus on the "distractive effects of portable
electronic devices when used by drivers," the board said in a statement.
The board has previously recommended bans on texting and cell phone use by commercial drivers,
but has stopped short of calling for a ban on the use of the devices by adults behind the wheel of
passenger cars.

NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said that as the use of personal electronic devices proliferates,
investigators are increasingly coming across accidents in all modes of transportation - aviation,
marine, rail and on the road - in which operators were texting, talking on cellphones or working
on laptops.
"This is trending very hot and it's a growing concern for the NTSB," she told The Associated Press.

The problem of texting while driving is getting worse despite a rush by states to ban the practice,
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said last week. In November, Pennsylvania became the 35th
state to forbid texting while driving.
About two out of 10 drivers overall - and half of American drivers between 21 and 24 - say they've
thumbed messages or emailed from the driver's seat, according to a survey of over 6,000 drivers
by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
And what's more, many drivers don't think it's dangerous when they do it - only when others do,
the survey found.
At any given moment last year on America's streets and highways, nearly one in every 100 car
drivers was texting, emailing, surfing the Web or otherwise using a hand-held electronic device,
the safety administration said. And those activities spiked 50 percent in over the previous year.
New Orleans crash: Two killed and six injured after car hits
crowd on busy street

Two people have been killed and six injured after being struck by a vehicle on a busy
New Orleans street on Saturday evening, authorities said.

Police superintendent Shaun Ferguson told local media that a suspect is in custody
following the incident that happened at about 8pm along Esplanade Avenue.

Mr Ferguson said the suspect is being tested to determine whether he was

intoxicated. His identity was not released.

The police chief said bystanders in the area were the ones who stopped the driver.

“We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this
individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been
involved in a one-car accident,” Mr Ferguson said.

A spokesperson for the city's emergency medical services, Jonathan Fourcade, said
a man and a woman – both about 30 years old – were killed. The injured ranged in
age from 28 to 65.

Five of the injured were taken to the hospital while one refused treatment, Mr
Fourcade said.
Photographs of the scene showed mangled bikes along the side of the street.
Teen killed after thrown from stolen car

A TEENAGE girl is dead after she was thrown from a speeding car that slammed
into a tree in Melbourne's north.

Two teenage girls were in a stolen Holden Astra when the driver lost control and
crashed into a tree at Epping about 1.10am on Friday, Victoria Police said.

"They've exceeded the speed limit … they've lost control, mounted the median strip
and rolled over," major crash Detective Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer told 3AW on Friday.

A 15-year-old Wollert girl was "ejected" from the car and died at the scene, while a
16-year-old Keilor girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The detective said they had yet to determine which of the teenage girls was driving
the car at the time but confirmed the car was stolen.

"It was only stolen a short distance up the road, with the keys in it.

The owner of the vehicle is believed to be known to the two girls who were in it,"
Detective Sargeant Dwyer said.

He said tyre marks on the road indicate the car was travelling at "fairly high speed".

Fatal crash sparks calls to fix dangerous Perth Road

A deadly crash has sparked calls to fix a dangerous stretch of road in Perth's
north.

A 25-year-old man, who was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Magna, died on Two

Rocks Road in Yanchep last night, when the driver of the car lost control and
crashed into a pole.

The man died at the scene and two other men in the car were taken to Royal
Perth Hospital and are in a stable condition.

Last night's crash was the second fatality on Two Rocks Road in two years.

Less than a kilometre before the roundabout, the speed limit drops from 90 to
60km/h.

“I think its a pretty dangerous stretch of road definitely but I also think there's
not enough people that know how dangerous it is,” local resident Eli Hellewell
said.

The crash has sparked calls for changes to be made to the dangerous stretch of
road.
Drag race driver Brody Ford killed in crash at motorsports
event

The loved ones of a drag race driver who crashed during an event in Western Australia say
he died doing something he loved.

Brody Ford, 26, was competing in a Racewars event at Albany Airport, in the Great
Southern region, on Sunday morning when his Ford Mustang failed to stop, entered a
grassed and sandy area, and flipped several times.

"The vehicle broke into pieces before coming to rest and then caught fire," a police
spokesman said in a statement.

Mr Ford was taken to Albany Hospital then flown to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical
condition but later died.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and 9News understands
Mr Ford was not registered to drive the high-powered car.

Mr Ford's ex-partner of four years Maddison Shanhun said her heart was broken as she
remembered him as courageous, ambitious and loving.

"He was so passionate about his cars, he would regularly be in the garage until 2am
polishing and Windexing his mirrors," she wrote on social media.

Ms Shanhun said Mr Ford would park 100m out of the way "just to keep his pride safe"
and she often joked that if his cars could kiss him he would not need her.

"You flew into the stars doing something you loved so dearly," she wrote.

"I hope heaven is filled with luxury cars, the bluest beaches and the most beautiful
sunrises."
Driver accused of causing horror Sydney smash does not
apply for bail

The man who is accused of causing a horror smash on a Sydney motorway that killed
a 12-year-old boy has not applied for bail.

John Pagakis, 34, appeared at Parramatta Court today after having been charged with
10 offences including dangerous driving occasioning death.

No application was made for bail and the matter was adjourned until May 2.

Mr Pagakis allegedly fled the scene on foot after his car became airborne, slamming
into six other vehicles early on Saturday night.

five people out of their vehicles," Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Kernin Lambert
told The Daily Telegraph after the crash.

"It was an extremely severe collision. People have been fighting for their lives. We
have been trying to keep people alive."
Teen driver, 15, killed as car flips and hits tree in horror
Melbourne crash

A 15-year-old girl has died after crashing the car she was driving in Melbourne’s
north.

Investigators have been told she was behind the wheel of a Holden Astra which was
travelling along Cooper Street, Epping, at 1.10am.

Detective DJarrod Dwyer today said police believed the car was travelling in the left
lane heading east on the street when it crossed over onto the wrong side of the road
and lost control.

At that point, it is understood the car flipped and rolled, before the 15-year-old inside
was thrown out of the vehicle.

Police said the underage and unlicensed driver, from Wollert, may have lost control
of the car while driving at a high speed, before it left the road and smashed into a
tree.

Emergency services attended and treated two teenage girls.

The driver died at the scene, while the other girl, aged 16, from Keilor, was taken to

Akron police confiscate 811 guns

About 32 hours before Akron rang in 2019, someone called police to report a couple
fighting in Goodyear Heights and said the man may have had a gun.

Two patrol officers quickly spotted the man driving an SUV and pulled it over.

When they asked the 23-year-old driver whether he had any weapons in the car,
police said the driver first said no. But then he conceded there was a handgun in the
doorjamb.

It was a Hi-Point .380 made in nearby Mansfield. New, the handgun costs about
$150, less than a pair of LeBron James sneakers.

It was the 811th — and final — gun recovered by Akron police in 2018, 46 more
than in 2017 when police took 765 guns off the street.

Almost all were illegally owned or carried. A few were turned in to police, either
found in neighborhoods or no longer wanted, police Capt. Mike Shearer said last
week.

“The numbers reflect people who are not allowed to have guns or possess them,”
Shearer said. “These guns are not only harmful for citizens, but harmful for police
who stop people illegally carrying guns.”

Police on Friday did not immediately have a breakdown of the 811 guns. Shearer
said most are probably handguns, but police recovered sawed-off shotguns, assault
rifles and other firearms, too.

Each will ultimately be destroyed, but not before the guns are test-fired.
83 persons arrested, 82 firearms confiscated in election
checkpoint operations

A total of 83 individuals have been arrested and 82 firearms confiscated in

checkpoint operations nationwide within the first three days of the election
period, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Chief
Superintendent Benigno Durana Jr.

In an interview on "Balitanghali", Durana said, "Nakaaresto po tayo ng 83 na

suspects o violators sa checkpoint operations. For the last 24 hours, meron
tayong 28 checkpoint operations."

He added, "Since start of the election period noong January 13, 2019, meron
na tayong nakumpiska at na-recover na 82 firearms....Some are loose firearms
so napakaganda ng ating checkpoint operations simula noong election period.
The tools of crime ay natanggal na po natin sa ating mga lansangan sa ating
mga komunidad."

Some were found to be legitimate gun holders, but for the remaining others,
Durana said that the police will file cases of carrying firearms outside of
residence.
California's gun seizure program hits hurdles

Authorities in California are struggling to enforce a state law that permits officials
to seize firearms from people with previous criminal convictions or mental health
issues – running into staffing and budgetary issues that have contributed to a massive
backlog of guns marked for confiscation.

The law, which was passed in 2013 following the shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy
Hook elementary school and set aside $24 million for seizure programs, had a goal
of confiscating around 20,000 guns over three years. But six years later, according
to a San Francisco Chronicle report, there are still roughly 9,000 of those guns out
there, with more being added to the list yearly.

While the state’s new governor, Gavin Newsom, has made gun control a priority of
his new administration and has proposed a multi-million-dollar increase to hire more
agents, the program reportedly has been hit by retention issues and a lack of
experience among new agents.

When the law was first introduced in 2013, funding was available for about four-
dozen temporary positions to supplement 42 Justice Department special agents. But
retirements and transfers kept the total number to around 57 and the department was
forced to return $6 million of its $24 million increase. An additional $5 million was
made available in 2016, but officials in the state say they’ve still had problems with
hiring.
Pupils in hospital after 'drug-related' incident at
Dunfermline High School

Four pupils have been taken to hospital after becoming unwell during a suspected
drug-related incident at a school in Fife.

Emergency services including five ambulances were called to Dunfermline High

School at lunchtime on Friday.

Four pupils were taken to Victoria Hospital, in Kirkcaldy, with six others treated at
the scene.

The school said it believed some pupils may have taken tablets outside the school
grounds during the lunch break.

In a statement, it said: "We called emergency services immediately and have worked
tirelessly with them to try and support pupils who may have been affected. Our first
priority has been to check the identified names and contact their parents/carers.

"We have, in conjunction with police and paramedics, also held two quick
assemblies with S2 and S3 pupils to ask for any more possible names and to inform
that we would be contacting parents/carers immediately.

"We would urge you to speak to your child to ensure that they have not taken any
tablets from anybody and to take medical advice if you think they have."

Police Scotland said officers responded following "a report of concern for the health
of a number of pupils".
Mississauga man, 50, faces 100 firearm and drug charges

Toronto police display the firearms they seized following an investigation into guns
and drugs in the Greater Toronto Area.

A Mississauga man is facing 100 firearm and drug charges after a police
investigation and search of his home and vehicle, Toronto police announced on
Wednesday.

The man, 50, was arrested in his SUV and charged on Sunday, Feb. 24. He appeared
in a Toronto courtroom on Monday, Feb. 25. He is due to appear for a show cause
hearing on Thursday in Old City Hall. He is known to police.

In all, police seized seven handguns, three shotguns and six rifles, as well as four
kilograms of heroin with a street value of about $400,000 and half an ounce of
cocaine.

nsp. Joe Matthews, spokesperson for the police's organized crime enforcement
integrated gun and gang task force, said officers found the weapons and drugs after
they searched the man's 2018 Toyota Highlander and his home in the Hurontatio
Street and Sherobee Road area.

Police haven't proved link to organized crime

"This is not a street level dealer," Matthews told reporters at police headquarters in
Toronto on Wednesday.

Twelve weapons were found in his home, while the other weapons and heroin were
found in his vehicle. Seven of the firearms, including two handguns, were loaded,
he said.

Other people lived at his home but no children, he said, adding it's possible that the
other people in the home didn't know about the presence of guns there.
