The TA Office Hours are posted on the door to room ME 3015 (494-4532) and will be held in that room.
Required Textbook:
Richard G. Budynas and J. Keith Nisbett, Shigley’s Mechanical Engineering Design (Ninth Edition), McGraw-Hill
Book Company, New York, 2011.
NOTE: Previous editions of the book, or on-line editions, are not acceptable. If you do not have a personal copy of
the Ninth Edition, you will be missing important lecture material. Most homework problems are taken from the
Ninth Edition. Also, the mid-term exam and the final exam are open book and closed notes (only the hard copy of
the Ninth Edition is permitted in the Exams – an electronic copy or other versions cannot be used during the exams).
Reference Texts:

Grading Policy:
Homework 25% (Individual work)
Solutions to the homework problems will be posted on the ME 452 website. Late homework or late projects will not
be graded and cannot receive any credit.
Projects 25% (Individual work)
Mid-Term Exam 25% Open book and closed notes (March 6th, 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm, LILY 1105).
Do not schedule a job interview, or other activity, during this time period since there is no make-up mid-term exam.
Final Exam 25% Open book and closed notes.
The exact date and the location of the Final Exam will be announced at a later date. (Final Exam - Early May).
All exams are open book (must use your own book) and closed lecture notes. The only calculator permitted for the
exams is the TI-30XIIS (or the TI-30XA). Students have one week after receiving their graded homework, projects,
and exams to request a regrade. The course grade is based on a straight scale.
Note that electronic equipment, excluding the TI-30XIIS calculator, is not permitted in the lectures or in the exams.
Failure to submit the projects on, or before, the specified deadlines is grounds for failing the course. Also, cheating
or copying on homework, exams, or projects, are grounds for reporting to the Dean of Students. For information on
academic honesty and integrity see http://www.purdue.edu/odos/osrr/academicintegritybrochure.php.
In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines and grading percentages are subject to
changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or other circumstances.
Brief Overview of the Course: Advanced topics in the design of mechanical components and systems for motion
and strength requirements. Advanced techniques that can be applied to the optimal design of machine components
and systems. Projects will involve machine design and mechanical components.
